The annual rainfall averages 2000–2500 mm, with a marked dry season from June to September and a rainy season from November
to February. The mean annual temperature is 25 ◦ C with a range
from 10 to 38 ◦ C (INRENA 2002). Two major vegetation types can be distinguished in Bonanza:

– Floodplain forests. Young floodplain forests (early stages of the alluvial vegetal succession) grow along river beaches. Neverthe- less, the majority of Bonanza’s territory is covered by mature floodplain forests subjected to ephemeral low-intensity floods which may occur once every 15–100 years, depending on the proximity and dynamics of the river (Foster 1990). Bamboo (Guadua sp.) monoespecific patches are widespread within this type of forest.
– Terra firme forests. Forests above the maximum flood level of rivers occupy the north-western border of Bonanza and the adja- cent forests of Shipetiari. This type of forest is characterized in Bonanza by the patchy presence of Mauritia flexuosa palm swamps (aguajal forest) embedded in larger extensions of better drained high ground forests.
