In other words, be able to decide where to slice a "block" with explosives as to get as much useful ore content as possible

"blast blocking" must be about the art of knowing how much and where to place the explosive charges. I remember seeing a documentary about a mine where they put a lot explosive charges in holes drilled along straight lines. Once detonated at the same time, these charges sliced off a huge block of marble like butter. I don't see any other option that would make sense in the context of mining. On the other hand, I have no idea how to translate it.
