@Melissa I've taken your advice, re inverted commas, for the glossary entry.
AllegroTrans Jul 29, 2018:
Essential to understand what it means The term "assisted witness," which can precede a formal indictment, may be applied to any person accused by a witness, or whose evidence indicates may have been complicit, acted as perpetrator or as an accomplice in the crimes being examined by the investigative judge.

Melissa McMahon Jul 25, 2018:
The status of "assisted witness" is a specifically French invention, with no good near-equivalent that I know of in English. If this is a legal document, I think you need to leave it in French or place the English in inverted commas and give the French and explanation somewhere else. Here is good guide to what it means (https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F1807), but also indicates how complicated an idea it is. How much you need to try to explain will depend on your context and the purpose of your document.

Thanks
neutral Melissa McMahon : I think it needs to be in inverted commas and glossed as it is a specifically French legal status and the direct translation doesn't really indicate what it means/Yes, based on category, I am assuming this is legal doc rather than news article.

I think it depends very much on the context of the document being translated, e.g. the target readership.
agree Garoubet (X) : I agree with the translation, and I agree with Melissa's comment.

Thanks Garoubet. I still think it depends on the target readership, as it might be safe to assume that the reader would understand what this status meant under French law.
