: Note, however, that "catering" is a very narrow type of food service, whereas "общ. питание" includes many types of service that are not catering. / No good reason for that. It means "public dining." Catering's very specific. Nutrition's another topic.

Catering is the business of providing foodservice at a remote site or a site like a hotel, public house(pub) and other various locations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catering . В принципе одно другому не мешает: куда уж более remote, чем вагон на БАМе :)

Discussion
I guess we will eventually hear strong opinions for or against every word in the dictionary.
When we debated the business ontology in Chicago last year, whenever the word "establishmet" turned up, many of us opined that it connoted with a social category -- a ruling class or such. What can you make of that? Is that the case where you live?
