Portuguese term

estancieiro

Portuguese to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry
We are translating a historical Brazilian book which utilises the term "estancieiro". We don't like the word rancher as a translation and are searching for something better. The word can be seen in its original context in the following sentence: Ela era filha de um rico estancieiro que vivia nas imediações.

Discussion

Adam Prus-Szczepanowski Dec 19, 2008:
Agree with Maria Eugenia. Use "estanciero" with inverted commas.
Scott Bowman (asker) Dec 19, 2008:
Thanks Maria, I may just take your advice on this. Sounds very sensible to me. Fortunately we are having a meeting with the author next week and I think we will suggest just that.
Maria Eugenia Farre Dec 19, 2008:
However, Wikipedia talks about the hacienda system also in relation to BR and AR, have a look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacienda. If I were you I would just leave it as estanciero.
Maria Eugenia Farre Dec 19, 2008:
Scott, if you don't like any of terms below, why not use simply 'estanciero' to give a little exotic flavor to your text? I think I've seen this before in English texts. You could also use the owner of a large hacienda, but this rings so Mexican to me.
Scott Bowman (asker) Dec 19, 2008:
addendum I should have mentioned that this text refers to the Gaúchos in Rio Grande Do Sul in a historical context. We are trying to use "cowboy" style language to give a similar feeling to the specific Gaúcho terms. That's why we thought of ranchers, but this lacked the grand sense of scale of the original.

large landholder

This is one solution that we used to use at the Organization of American States. 16,400 references. Presumably they "do" something on these vast landholdings - i.e. ranching.

Note that "rancher" can imply huge landholdings - look at the King Ranch in Texas (825,000 acres, 24,000 km2). Unfortunately, "large rancher" refers to a large ranch-style home.

Examples of "large landholder":

farmer

:)
Note from asker:
I agree with the peer comment, estancieiro specifically relates to a large property owner
Peer comment(s):

neutral Maria Eugenia Farre : O problema de farmer é que passa a idéia de pequena propriedade ao contrário de estancieiro

rich cattlestock owner

I think it sounds good to use "she was the daughter of a rich cattle stock owner".
I think it is important that the reader knows that he owns cattle because it embeds the precise concept of what kind of farmer, what kind of landowner he is; cattle ranch owners have different challenges from say, sugar cane farmers, so it is important to keep this information. I am not a big fan of keeping the original word with inverted commas, because the reader is left with a sense of exotism (yes) but unclear about the meaning, unless of course the rest of the story provides an opportunity for clarification.
