Forewarned is forearmed

This is my sugGUESStion, although I do not think it is quite the same.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Gilmar Fernandes : If you look this up in MICHAELIS dictionary, you will find this expression translated as "um homem prevenido vale por dois"........so you were right, not quite the same.

He who warns is a true friend

I don't mean to invalidate the other translations. It's just that this is the variant I know. I thought I'd offer it as an option, just in case. :-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Gilmar Fernandes : This web site you mention, has terrible, literal translations of Portuguese sayings... How can someone publish these, I can't understand.

Concordo, Gilmar! Só o coloquei porque foi o endereço que apareceu no Google. Mas a versão que conheço é realmente essa ("true friend"). Abraços. :-)

A word to the wise

Na minha opinião esta é a melhor correspondência. Não gosto de traduzir provérbios literalmente, perde toda graça.

A word to the wise (is sufficient).
something that you say when you are going to give someone some advice. A word to the wise - if you're going to drive, don't go on a Friday night until after the rush hour traffic.
