Zur Zeit der Einführung des kabak in Russland prangerte Martin Luther exzessive Trunksucht als „den allmächtigen Abgott der Deutschen“ an und sagte dem „Saufteufel“ (1541) den Kampf an.
I'm not looking for a direct translation - what I need is an English term which uses a mythical being as a metaphor for alcoholism (Russian зеленый змей would be another example).

: I get your point and I'm sure Luther was no fan of Dionysus either (i.e. didn't consider him a deity), but surely he would've called him by name?

demon rum
although this turns it around a bit, in the USA, "demon rum" is THE word for this sort of thing.

Ian M-H (X)
: But the question is about 16th century Europe, not the USA. Rum was pretty rare over here back then, I believe. No reason to prefer this to David's "demon drink" (for which there are plenty of authentic US references) IMO.

Which is why I qualified it as USA. However, is it intended for a 16th century reading audience or current day? Which would be understandable to the audience? Best to leave it to the translator, IMO. Give him/her many choices with information.
