The speed necessary for an object to escape the gravitational pull of an object. Anything that moves away from the object with more than the escape speed will never return.
Example sentences:

De ontsnappingssnelheid van een hemellichaam (bijvoorbeeld een planeet) is de minimale snelheid waarmee een niet-aangedreven voorwerp vanaf dat hemellichaam zou moeten worden weggeschoten (onder ideale theoretische condities, geen wrijving van de atmosfeer, geen invloed van andere hemellichamen) zodat het tot in het oneindige van dat hemellichaam af blijft bewegen en niet naar het hemellichaam terugvalt. Niet-aangedreven is hierbij cruciaal: mét aandrijving is theoretisch geen minimale snelheid nodig.
