central (noun)

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation Refrigeration Systems
Context: Refrigeration and freezing systems for supermarkets.

Discussion

Charles Davis Mar 30, 2017:
@Robert I was assuming it refers to a supermarket chain, or perhaps to a whole lot of supermarkets in different chains that have the same kind of "central".
Robert Carter Mar 30, 2017:
397 plants? I tend to agree that plants would seem to be the translation, but I'm stuck on the figure here: 397 of them, does that seem plausible?
Justin Peterson (asker) Mar 29, 2017:
You have a point there Yes, they are using unidades and centrales ... in the same sentence, actually, so "plant" does seem the best option
Charles Davis Mar 29, 2017:
Units To me the "unidades" are units (obviously), and they're being distinguished from the "centrales". So I don't think the centrales should be called units.
Justin Peterson (asker) Mar 29, 2017:
Strange but true: plant (or unit) As a layman, "plant" is a synonym for a factory or facility to me ... but it looks like, indeed, you have plants, in the plant room. And you can go check the plant, which to me would involve checking some vegetation, but, that's just my ignorance here. It does seem that "unit" works here too.
Charles Davis Mar 29, 2017:
The "pequeñas unidades de CO2" are devices or units. But the "centrales existentes" are plants.
Charles Davis Mar 29, 2017:
@Justin Just about every supermarket has a refrigeration plant, in the plant room. It doesn't mean a power station or anything like that. They can be quite small, but supermarkets need a lot of refrigeration. What makes you think it's a device? There's nothing in the texts you've quoted to indicate that.

Here's a photo of a central for a supermarket:

This is the central (the left-hand photo in the second row):
http://static.miweb.paginasamarillas.es/var/m_9/9c/9ce/5085/...

And here's a plant (see figure 3):
http://www.achrnews.com/articles/110587-co2-is-keeping-super...

It makes perfect sense for the manager to check the plant every day. See the last part of my last source on supermarket plant rooms.
Justin Peterson (asker) Mar 29, 2017:
But I believe it's a device, not a facility ... Charles: In the context here, they're talking about, for example, the manager checking the "central" everyday, at a small supermarket, to make sure there are no low-coolant alerts. There's not a "plant" in the back of the supermarket.

"El equipo compacto ECOMARKET de CO2 subcrítico expuesto en el salón, es una central de refrigeración para supermercados con un circuito frigorífico en cascada paralela de CO2 subcrítico y R134a. La distribución de refrigerante es en CO2 tanto para temperaturas positivas (-10ºC) y negativas (-30ºC)."

"Within the Ecomarket project, Intarcon has developed a range of compact refrigeration plants using a subcritical CO2 cycle with double-suction pressure for cooling at positive and negative temperatures. These plants are designed to meet refrigeration needs in supermarkets with medium and large surface areas, as well as industrial and catering establishments"

agree Jennifer Levey : Yes. A 'plant' is a group of units having diverse individual functions - and the CO2 units they've added will, in effect, become part of the 'plant'.

Thanks, Robin. That's right.
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : Yes - that's what I would have said.

Station

"Refrigeration" station is also an option.

Basically, it just means "central unit", but if you feel you need to distinguish between other types of unit and don't like to repeat the words, this could be one option to consider.
Example sentence:

The invention relates to a concentrated refrigeration station deploy method; a high voltage distribution room, a low voltage distribution room, ..

Each refrigeration station consists of one 1200-W He I precooling unit shared in parallel by two 500-W, 1.85°K. He II refrigerators.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Davis : "Central" doesn't mean central unit; it's "central" as in power station (but much smaller, of course): a set of units forming a system, as Robin says. "Station" is v. rare in native sources.
