русский term

заочное образование vs. экстернат

русский => английский Общественные науки Образование / Педагогика survey of students
These are two categories on a survey (among others, such as "evening" or "daytime"), of which the student has to choose which one applies to him. From what I can figure out, these two terms are very similar. I've got "distance" for the first and "non-residential" for second; but frankly in English those frequently mean the same thing. There must be a difference in the Russian system, since students can only choose one answer.

Thanks!

distance education vs. equivalency testing

In the former case, you have a specific curriculum and may spend a few weeks a year at the school anyway (pre-exam consultations + exams).
The latter is entirely do-it-yourself, you set your own pace (often faster than standard) and only take the exams to prove your level of knowledge.
There may be slight variations, this is what it generally is.

Sometimes the former also includes a certain minimum of resident courses, e.g. laboratory practice.

Actually, sometimes there is also a distinction being made between the true distance education ("дистанционное образование") and extramural programs with short resident phases ("заочное образование").

distance learning vs. visiting student program

Don't have time to research it, but I think that "экстернат" refers to the taking of courses (or at least of exams) by students not enrolled at a given institution. In a list, you could omit "program."

distance training vs. externship

Distance education / distance learning are pretty much valid, but distance training is a more frequently used term.

As to экстернат, another appropriate option would be external studies.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Lisa. "Distance training" sounds more like something a company would use, rather than university students. (Education is not the same thing as training, after all.) Some of the sources here use both terms, as distinct: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=%22distance+training%22&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=1%2C47&as_vis=1

part-time education vs. external studies

In Russia I was a full-time student (opposed to the part-time) at the University but I have come across the external studies. It has in common with the part-time education the fact that you don't need to go to the educational institution daily. You have to take the exams and to meet the requirements. But if you chose part-time education - you have lectures and other forms of classes before the exams. Usually 2 weeks studies before the exams. These classes are required to take to get ready for the exams better.
External studies are the studies that you do on your own in a very short time. It is seldom connected with the Higher education. As for me, I did external studies after leaving the school at the age of 15 (usually we study at school till 18) for college that doesn't provide Higher education. And when I decided to go to the University I took up external studies to get a Russian analogue of GCE. I did the studies of the 10th and 11th forms for one year.
To sum up, these two forms of education are not the same in Russia
