***Fu un vero caso*** quello che mi portò fra le mani il tuo telegramma di ier l’altro, ma ormai era troppo tardi poiché già sulla Stampa avevo letto l’annuncio della morte della nostra povera Amalia…

-> littéralement, l'auteur a eu un choc, le télégramme l'a secoué...
Mais cela me semble un peu "léger" (en plus nous sommes dans les années 1920, l'auteur est plutôt lettré et ne verse jamais dans le langage familier...)
