Hola,

Sigo en el informe psicológico del niño. Sólo me queda esta duda:

Hablando la inasistencia a clases de una de las hermanas del niño:

"Dada esta situación, se canceló la matrícula de la niña el día XX de XXXXX, con lo que permaneció inescolar a esa fecha."

Sé que inescolaridad se refiere a deserción escolar, school drop-out, pero no logro darle sentido a esta frase.

¿Alguien sabe?

Thanks for your assistance.

Regarding your question, I can tell that, as stated in the rest of the report, her enrollment was cancelled by the school due to her constant non-attendance to classes. The parents never showed interest in their children´s education, since the same situation happened with the elder brothers. So, Bob´s interpretation is right.

Who canceled her enrollment? The text doesn't make it clear whether the school dropped her (Bob's interpretation) or whether she was taken out of the school by her parents (my interpretation).

Without more context it's hard to tell, but my understanding is that the child is being charged with truancy and the author is emphasizing that the student was not subject to the school's regulations from the time she was formally taken out of the school. They can't charge her with truancy when she wasn't enrolled. Emphasis is on the date. I don't think it's about her schooling in general.

The point seems to be to subtly emphasize that the parents/adults responsible for her care did not take action to enroll her in some other school after she was expelled from her the last school that she attended due to excessive absence.

To me, it would sound more natural in English to write:

If you otherwise know that this is the case, I would suggest that you translate the sentence in this way.

neutral Jennifer Levey : There's no reason to suppose that the parents 'did not take action to enrol her' - they may have tried but found no school able/willing to take the child. It's best to stick to the known facts - the kid was not in any school.//Pull the other one, Robert!

All I did was speculate as to why the sentence was worded as it was (it is, after all, something of a tautology). As you can surely see, this speculation is not part of the translation itself. The validity of my suggestion does not rest on its veracity.

Best to avoid making assumptions about whether of not the parents tried to get the child enrolled elsewhere. The source text merely says she was unschooled.

Although the term "excluded" is not used in the source text, in English it conveys the intended meaning effectively and is an established term in education/schooling policies. The use of this would make it clear that the reason for her no longer going to school is a result of a decision made by the school as a consequence of her non-attendance.

Permanent exclusions
