Spanish term

Compaginadas

Spanish to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Publishing
Two steps included under the "production" phase of the editing/publishing process of a book.

- Preparación de compaginadas
- Segundas compaginadas. Comprobación correcciones

According to the Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, the definition of "compaginadas" is:

Se entiende por compaginadas el original digitalizado dispuestos en las páginas e impreso que sirve de base para la corrección de las segundas y terceras pruebas pruebas.

All I can seem to find in English is "make-up", so "the make-up of the book". I also wondered whether these are the "proofs" of the book... Does anyone know?

Many thanks, H.

page proofs

Proofs issued earlier in the proofreading and copyediting process are called either galleys or galley proofs, while those created in a near-final version for editing and checking purposes are called ***page proofs***. It is at this stage that most mistakes have already been corrected, and any mistake caught at this stage will be very expensive to correct. Page proofs typically also have a near-final layout, so that the layout can be examined also. Page proofs also have the final pagination, which facilitates compiling the index.

I assume "compaginadas" is short for "pruebas compaginadas". That means, they have had the "page makeup" done on them. This is done by software called a "formatter".

So you could translate "compaginadas" as "page proofs" and "pruebas" as just "proofs". Hope this helps.
Note from asker:
Thanks Deborah. The only thing I am wondering about is that two points later in the list of the whoel process it says "Envío al autor de un juego de pruebas para su comprobación", and I had translated "juego de pruebas" as "set of proofs", so if "compaginadas" is "proofs", what would the "pruebas" be? Or do you think I could translate both "compaginadas" as well as "pruebas" as "proofs"? Thanks! H.
In the meantime I have found this link http://www.cege.es/diccionario/diccionario2.php?idioma=espanol According to the glossary, "compaginación" would be "page makeup" and "prueba" would be "proof"...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Deborah. I think you must be right about "compaginadas" being short for "pruebas compaginadas", so your suggestion of "page proofs" and "proofs" for "compaginadas" and "pruebas" makes total sense. Thanks a lot to both of you for your help! H."

arranged/ sorting

It means to put in order the pages, once before printing and after the material is printed to ensure all pages are in order. It is a type of proofing, in this case not of the corrrectness of the work but to ensure all pages will be in the correct place when the publication goes out for sale.

agree Ma.Elena Carrión de Medina : "Sorting" is the word I´d use.
