German term

Körperfettrate

German to English Medical Medical (general) weight control
This translation contains the term "Körperfettanteil", which, as far as I know, is "body fat percentage" in English. However, now there is also the term "Körperfettrate". Would that be something different, or another word for the same thing? The two words are joined together with a "bzw.": "...zum Zwecke der Angabe seines Körperfettanteils bzw. seiner Körperfettrate..."

Discussion

Dr Sue Levy (X) Aug 27, 2007:
Astrid, perhaps you could use "body fat content" as a more general expression - or "amount of body fat" - the BMI and BF percentage/ratio, whether based on skinfold thicknesses or other measurements, are indicators.
Trudy Peters Aug 26, 2007:
Well, that may be it then, since it's related to Körperfettanteil, and the "bzw." would make sense.
Astrid Elke Witte (asker) Aug 26, 2007:
Popularity of the term Well, in Germany they just use the term "BMI", so I had no idea that "Körperfettrate" might be an "authentic" German equivalent of that.
Trudy Peters Aug 26, 2007:
Körperfettrate doesn't seem to be a popular word in German, judging from the Ghits.

body fat rate (BFR)

A literal translation should work here.

Body fat rate is sometimes called 'adipose rate'.

BFR is different from BMI.

neutral MMUlr : Maybe they mean BFR (however, Körperfettrate still being an unusual German term): http://jumk.de/bmi/body-fat-rate.php

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks, Chetan! As indicated, I needed a different word from "body fat percentage" anyhow, because I also have "Körperfettanteil" in the same sentence, which I have translated as "body fat percentage". Astrid"

body mass index (BMI)

Would that fit?

Upon further research, BMI seems to be related to (but not the same as) Körperfettanteil. Körperfettrate gets me nowhere...
Note from asker:
Körperfettanteil is where you stand on some scales and they not only tell you your weight, but how much of you is fat as well.
BMI is different from Körperfettanteil, because it is your unsightliness rating.

agree bhpirch : absolutely, that's what I would say as well.

disagree Gisela Greenlee : BMI is based on a ratio of your height to your weight; while it may imply that you are fat based on how high it is, it's not a measurement of the percentage of body fat.
