في أفريقيا، تعتبر الملاريا السبب الرئيسي لوفيات الأطفال دون سن الخامسة (20٪) وتمثل 10٪ من العبء العالمي للمرض في القارة.
يعتقد خبراء الإقتصاد أن الملاريا في بعض البلدان الأفريقية تعيق النمو بنسبة تصل إلى 1.3٪ سنويًا.
نظرًا لتراكمها على مدى عدة سنوات، فهذه الأرقام يتم تفسيرها بالإختلافات الكبيرة بين الناتج القومي الإجمالي للبلدان المتضررة من الملاريا والناتج الإجمالي للبلدان التي لم تتأثر به، وبالتالي فهي تشكل عقبة رئيسية في تنمية المنطقة بأسرها.

Traduction - français Selon certaines estimations, en termes de PNB, le paludisme fait perdre à l'Afrique plus de 12 milliards de dollars US par an, alors que la maladie pourrait être maîtrisée en investissant une partie de cette somme.
En Afrique, le paludisme est la première cause de mortalité des enfants de moins de cinq ans (20%) et représente 10% de la charge morbide globale du continent.
Des économistes estiment que dans certains pays d'Afrique, le paludisme entrave la croissance de 1,3% par an.
Cumulés sur plusieurs années, ces chiffres se traduisent par des différences substantielles entre les PNB des pays affectés par le paludisme et ceux des pays épargnés, et constituent un obstacle majeur au développement de l'ensemble de la région.
Dans les années 1980 et 1990, l'utilisation expérimentale de moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticide (MII) a permis de faire baisser d'environ 20% les décès enregistrés parmi les jeunes enfants.
Malheureusement, le coût de ces MII peut être prohibitif au sein des familles vulnérables au paludisme, qui sont souvent les plus pauvres du monde.
