Italian term

frutta sotto spirito

Italian to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture fruit
"Il profumo del Primitivo è di frutti rossi con descrittori di amarena, more e prugna e una sempre maggiore sensazione di frutta sotto spirito con l’aumento del grado alcolico"

Any ideas as to how I can translate "frutta sotto spirito"? All I've come up with so far is liqoured fruit but I'm not very confident.
TIA
Carly

carly kelly (asker) Sep 19, 2021:
I know that it's fruit soaked in alcohol... but I was trying to find something a bit snappier and that would avoid the repetition of alcohol at the end of the sentence. Just realised I misspelled liquor in my question...apologies.

brandied fruit

Oopps, Sorry, brandied fruit has already appeared in the comments, see Barbara Carrara's comment, which is, imho, very to the point.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Lisa Jane : preserved fruit doesn't necessarily mean in alcohol and fruit infused alcohol only refers to the liquid minus the fruit. frutta sotto spirito is a specific flavour and not just "fruity".

"Alcohol" is redundant - it's obvious from the context. And "fruit-infused" is poetic licence. Basically they're saying it's very fruity.

"liquored fruit", "fruit-infused liquor", "fruit liqueur"

"Fruit preserved in alcohol" is a heavy mouthful, insufficiently pleasing for a text trying to attract us to the wine. "Fruit soaked in alchol" is awful; this isn't laundry we're talking about. "Fruit-infused alcohol" is readable and tempting but doesn't solve the double use of "alcohol", mentioned as a problem.
Example sentence:

Garnish the drink with a slice of liquored fruit for extra flavour.

Reference:

A few more from the late Giles Watson's wine glossary

They are marked 'referring to aroma', as is the already suggested 'fruit liqueur'.
I haven't included those mentioning 'alcohol', since you'd rather avoid the repetition.

Thank you, Rachel. I saw this as an opportunity to remember Giles.
agree tradu-grace : when I see a question on wine or a similar one I always have a thought to Giles and its wine glossary and not forget his Corriere della Sera articles' translations. He was great!
