À mon propos
Professionalism and competence
My forte lies in knowing the subject really well so I translate it in the target language in the most natural way possible without it looking stilted, like a translation.

Personal details: I am bi-lingual- ENGLISH (UK) and MALTESE and I write in my native languages without mistakes. My Italian is native level due to proximity to Italy, love of Italian music, art, TV, fashion, strong ties, frequent stays there because of art and research, concerts, exhibitions, and, of course, food-after all, it is just an hour away. The Italians are so very expressive. My French is also very good but I would not dare translate in either of these non-native languages.

Qualifications:
- Teacher's professional warrant;
- BA (Hons.) in EU studies and History of Art;
- MA in Baroque studies;
- IATA level 1.

Work Experience:
- Over 30 years as a teacher of French and English.
- Part-time work in a travel agency;
- Engaged in family business since childhood.

My teacher training, vast experience and innate eye for detail and perfection makes me ideal as a proofreader and helps me as a translator:

I translate without mistakes, though I go over the text later to make double sure. I work with a translation agency which also asks me to proofread tests to assess recruits. I translate with an eye on the audience too, so my translations sound natural, avoiding over-literal translations and employing the right register for the translation.
My work experience taught me to meet deadlines while still delivering quality work.

Areas Preferred: The fields I translate were chosen either because of love and involvement in the field or because of work experience, hence favourites are Art/Painting, Law, Restoration/Conservation, Business/Finance/Economics, the latter as I was personally involved in them due to our family business. First-hand experience is really the best way of getting the right term.

Translation Experience: Freelance translator for nearly 6 years, but had plenty of translation jobs before. My job as a teacher and study-units at university, especially the credit that prepared us to be selective when choosing the appropriate term and register for the post-graduate dissertation, gave me loads of practice for proofreading/editing and presentations too as we had to adapt texts to fit audience-academic or otherwise. I only translate fields I am proficient in and do not accept technical translations.

MY FORTE :
Contracts; Articles of Association; company contracts and minutes of general meetings especially for companies in Algeria, Tunisia, Belgium and Switzerland. I have done loads so I am really proficient and there is little I do not know about them.

Some of my translation jobs were:

- a 195 page, where I was in constant contact with the author to bring out the differences in character of 3 of the main protagonists. I had to be sure it was what the author wanted to convey, not what I thought he wanted to convey;

- EU affairs, politics and Government;

- a 240 A4-page book, about existentialism;

- Art/Literary(IT/EN or FR>EN): my History of Art and MA Baroque course(conservation, painting techniques, making sculptures in clay and bronze, properties of oil, oil mixing, canvas/wall preparation for painting, restoration, changes and result of chemicals, effects of humidity or heat to painting, fresco painting, ceramics) gave me the necessary information for understanding the text and translating it;

- Subtitle translation and proofreading/editing; I try to make the sentences short so viewers can follow the action, and adapt according to culture and audience;

- Business/commerce/finance/economics reports: my experience in the family business came in handy during my university course as 1/3 of the EU BA course consisted of business/economics/finance, also trade, so I use terms I have become very familiar with and even completed Intermediate level of economics/business/finance course. I, therefore, translate knowing the milieu;

- Travel and tourism-Mont St. Michel, Courmayeur, Venice, Florence, menus, travel and tourism can involve property and car renting, insurance, claims, beauty cultural tours, sports holidays. Here, you have to cater to different categories of clients. Tourism is a major source of income in Malta.

- Some music, lots of birth and marriage and residence certificates, patents;

- Contracts, especially company contracts or end-of year reports, minutes of general meetings, company setup and employment terms and call-centre contracts;

Proofreading/editing
Among the numerous texts were Masters theses, diploma dissertations, regularly proofread translation tests for recruits for agencies, politicians' speeches, contracts, cover letters for applications, legal disputes. I also proofread PDF files which are well written directly on Adobe Reader regularly for agencies which demand it.

Membership:
• Kommunika Infolettera to follow translation issues in Italian; I have to participate in Italian and topics are diverse, ranging from law, blogs, issues which concern translation aspects-e.g. legal aspect, ownership.

•Kelmet il-Malti, Għaqda tal-Malti (University of Malta) and Għaqda tal-Provi tal-Malti to keep up with current developments in the Maltese language- new words, new spelling rules.

Coursera course on Human Physiology, Music, especially instruments and construction-polyphony, Chamber music, Cantatas, Art courses. My MA thesis also contained a section on Baroque music and how it developed.

Achievements

4-night holiday in Grand Hotel Corinthia, Budapest, August 2004 after winning a competition about the future of the Plaza Shopping complex; a tandem bike in 2006 after a writing competition; publication of several articles in newspapers on various topics ranging from education, infertility and treatment, politics. I am happy using my writing skills to reflect on issues I feel strongly about and care to research and present new views, incorporating my own ideas.

Rates reflect the quality

• I take pride in my work, exacting when it comes to terms used and get a sense of satisfaction with each finished job. I have learnt how to research properly during my translation course and through experience. I also review my work before submitting texts. I look at collaboration with the client in case of ambiguity in the text and I strive to achieve naturalness in my translations.

I expect to be asked for any needed information BEFORE acceptance of work, not AFTER IMG_1418
