Source text - English The moment when, 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong planted his foot on the surface of the Moon inspired awe, pride and wonder around the world. This newspaper argued that “man, from this day on, can go wheresoever in the universe his mind wills and his ingenuity contrives…to the planets, sooner rather than later, man is now certain to go.” But no. The Moon landing was an aberration, a goal achieved not as an end in itself but as a means of signalling America’s extraordinary capabilities. That point, once made, required no remaking. Only 571 people have been into orbit; and since 1972 no one has ventured much farther into space than Des Moines is from Chicago.
The next 50 years will look very different. Falling costs, new technologies, Chinese and Indian ambitions, and a new generation of entrepreneurs promise a bold era of space development. It will almost certainly involve tourism for the rich and better communications networks for all; in the long run it might involve mineral exploitation and even mass transportation. Space will become ever more like an extension of Earth—an arena for firms and private individuals, not just governments. But for this promise to be fulfilled the world needs to create a system of laws to govern the heavens—both in peacetime and, should it come to that, in war.
The development of space thus far has been focused on facilitating activity down below—mainly satellite communications for broadcasting and navigation. Now two things are changing. First, geopolitics is stoking a new push to send humans beyond the shallows of low-Earth orbit. China plans to land people on the Moon by 2035. President Donald Trump’s administration wants Americans to be back there by 2024. Falling costs make this showing off more affordable than before. Apollo cost hundreds of billions of dollars (in today’s money). Now tens of billions are the ticket price.

It is a mistake to promote space as a romanticised Wild West, an anarchic frontier where humanity can throw off its fetters and rediscover its destiny. For space to fulfil its promise governance is required. At a time when the world cannot agree on rules for the terrestrial trade of steel bars and soybeans that may seem like a big ask. But without it the potential of all that lies beyond Earth will at best wait another 50 years to be fulfilled. At worst space could add to Earth’s problems.

Source text - English Boom times are back in Silicon Valley. Office parks along Highway 101 are once again adorned with the insignia of hopeful start-ups. Rents are soaring, as is the demand for fancy vacation homes in resort towns like Lake Tahoe, a sign of fortunes being amassed. The Bay Area was the birthplace of the semiconductor industry and the computer and internet companies that have grown up in its wake. Its wizards provided many of the marvels that make the world feel futuristic, from touch-screen phones to the instantaneous searching of great libraries to the power to pilot a drone thousands of miles away. The revival in its business activity since 2010 suggests progress is motoring on.
So it may come as a surprise that some in Silicon Valley think the place is stagnant, and that the rate of innovation has been slackening for decades. Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal, and the first outside investor in Facebook, says that innovation in America is “somewhere between dire straits and dead”. Engineers in all sorts of areas share similar feelings of disappointment. And a small but growing group of economists reckon the economic impact of the innovations of today may pale in comparison with those of the past.

Across the board, innovations fueled by cheap processing power are taking off. Computers are beginning to understand natural language. People are controlling video games through body movement alone—a technology that may soon find application in much of the business world. Three-dimensional printing is capable of churning out an increasingly complex array of objects, and may soon move on to human tissues and other organic material.
An innovation pessimist could dismiss this as “jam tomorrow”. But the idea that technology-led growth must either continue unabated or steadily decline, rather than ebbing and flowing, is at odds with history. Chad Syverson of the University of Chicago points out that productivity growth during the age of electrification was lumpy. Growth was slow during a period of important electrical innovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; then it surged.

Source text - English A theme of the age, at least in the developed world, is that people crave silence and can find none. The roar of traffic, the ceaseless beep of phones, digital announcements in buses and trains, TV sets blaring even in empty offices, are an endless battery and distraction. The human race is exhausting itself with noise and longs for its opposite—whether in the wilds, on the wide ocean or in some retreat dedicated to stillness and concentration. Alain Corbin, a history professor, writes from his refuge in the Sorbonne, and Erling Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, from his memories of the wastes of Antarctica, where both have tried to escape.
And yet, as Mr Corbin points out in "A History of Silence", there is probably no more noise than there used to be. Before pneumatic tyres, city streets were full of the deafening clang of metal-rimmed wheels and horseshoes on stone. Before voluntary isolation on mobile phones, buses and trains rang with conversation. Newspaper-sellers did not leave their wares in a mute pile, but advertised them at top volume, as did vendors of cherries, violets and fresh mackerel. The theatre and the opera were a chaos of huzzahs and barracking. Even in the countryside, peasants sang as they drudged. They don’t sing now.
What has changed is not so much the level of noise, which previous centuries also complained about, but the level of distraction, which occupies the space that silence might invade. There looms another paradox, because when it does invade—in the depths of a pine forest, in the naked desert, in a suddenly vacated room—it often proves unnerving rather than welcome. Dread creeps in; the ear instinctively fastens on anything, whether fire-hiss or bird call or susurrus of leaves, that will save it from this unknown emptiness. People want silence, but not that much.

Source text - English Over the course of many years, without making any great fuss about it, the authorities in New York disabled most of the control buttons that once operated pedestrian-crossing lights in the city. Computerised timers, they had decided, almost always worked better. By 2004, fewer than 750 of 3,250 such buttons remained functional. The city government did not, however, take the disabled buttons away—beckoning countless fingers to futile pressing.
Initially, the buttons survived because of the cost of removing them. But it turned out that even inoperative buttons serve a purpose. Pedestrians who press a button are less likely to cross before the green man appears, says Tal Oron-Gilad of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in Israel. Having studied behaviour at crossings, she notes that people more readily obey a system which purports to heed their input.
Inoperative buttons produce placebo effects of this sort because people like an impression of control over systems they are using, says Eytan Adar, an expert on human-computer interaction at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr Adar notes that his students commonly design software with a clickable “save” button that has no role other than to reassure those users who are unaware that their keystrokes are saved automatically anyway. Think of it, he says, as a touch of benevolent deception to counter the inherent coldness of the machine world.
That is one view. But, at road crossings at least, placebo buttons may also have a darker side. Ralf Risser, head of FACTUM, a Viennese institute that studies psychological factors in traffic systems, reckons that pedestrians’ awareness of their existence, and consequent resentment at the deception, now outweighs the benefits.

Add an aerial photo, clipboard, paper form, or camera, and an individual can locate and describe characteristics of any feature be it a power pole, agricultural field, sewer main, or wetland. However simple to use, there are limits and inherent inefficiencies in using traditional paper-based approaches to field data collection. It costs time and money to collect the data, process them from field to office, and put them to use. Paper-based information gathered by the field crew can become lost or inaccessible, as well as a burden to all who collect and input it into a computer database. Clearly, tools that improve data integration and information cycling between field and office advance the ability to describe, monitor, and manage remote assets. Portable GIS cuts data transfer costs while it empowers field crews with digital maps.
Technology Integration
Portable GIS represents new capabilities that have only recently become feasible by the convergence of supporting technologies. Modern tools permit field professionals and workers to accurately and rapidly map habitat, pipelines, farm chemicals, and cable drop points. Portable GIS entitles the user to describe those features' characteristics and concurrently view and evaluate them in relation to the landscape, roads, and facility on-site. The PIP Fixation Hinge is an external fixation device designed to control rotation of an injured finger to regain, maintain or increase the range of motion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. It utilizes small diameter wire fixation techniques and procedures for placement and is intended to be centered on the axis of rotation. The device is designed to permit adjustment on the axis of rotation. Consult surgical technique for recommended procedures. Composition of the device permits radiographic visualization
During treatment the patient must adjust the device. Under advice from the surgeon, the patient must turn a knob that moves the phalanges through flexion and extension of the PIP joint. The knob can be retracted to allow disengagement from the gear. With the worm disengaged, the two braces slide freely permitting active motion for rehabilitation. The PIP Fixation Hinge is made from plastic and metal materials. The component material is provided on the outside carton label. Do not mix components from different manufacturers. All components are designed for single use only.
INDICATIONS
1. Post-traumatic PIP joint contracture which has resulted in lost range of motion.
2. Fractures and disease of the fingers, PIP joints and hands which generally may result in joint contractures or loss of range of motion.
CONTRAINDICATION
The device is contraindicated for use in uncooperative or mentally incompetent patients who are unable to follow the postoperative regimen.
WARNINGS
1. Wire placement requires strict anatomic considerations to avoid damage to nerves or blood vessels. The wire should be gently pushed through soft tissue, not drilled, to reduce possibility of injury.
2. Wire drilling in the bone should be done slowly to avoid heat necrosis of surrounding tissue and bone.
3. Use caution when handling the sharp tips of the wires. The tip of the wire should be held when clipped. Eye protection is recommended for operating room personnel.
4. Wire site care is crucial in reducing localized infections.
5. Intraoperative fracture or instrument breakage can occur. Instruments which have been used extensively or with excessive force are susceptible to fracture. Examine all instruments for wear and damage prior to surgery. Replace where necessary.

Das habe eine mit den Plänen vertraute Person erklärt.
Foxconn ist vor allem als Hersteller von Apple-Geräten wie iPhone und iPad-Tablet bekannt. Die in Taiwan beheimatete Firma hat ihre Werke größtenteils in China. Ein Foxconn-Sprecher wollte sich gegenüber Bloomberg nicht äußern.

In Bernoulli-Laufwerken kommen nicht lose Disketten, sondern auswechselbare Disk-Kassetten zum Einsatz.
Bernoulli-Prinzip
Ein Bernoulli-Laufwerk macht sich die schon im 18.Jahrhundert von dem Physiker Daniel Bernoulli erforschte Tatsache zunutze, dass bei der Rotation eines Körpers die Luftmoleküle an seiner Oberfläche beschleunigt und nach außen geschleudert werden, so dass über der Körperoberfläche ein Unterdruck entsteht.
In einem Bernoulli-Laufwerk hängt die flexible Diskette zentrisch fixiert an einer Antriebsachse. Über der Diskette befindet sich eine starre Scheibe, die sog. Bernoulli-Platte.
Wenn sich der Antriebsmotor in Bewegung setzt und die Diskette auf 2000 Umdrehungen pro Minute beschleunigt, bewirkt der entstehende Unterdruck, dass die Diskette bis auf ca. 0,125 mm an die Platte herangedrückt wird. Einen weiteren Andruck verhindert die nachströmende Luft. Der Unterdruck sowie die hohe Rotationsgeschwindigkeit führen zu einer sehr stabilen Lage der Diskette.

Кроме того, ВВВ не вызвала увеличения кровотока, малых изменений в ЭКГ, повышения количества капиллярных сосудов кожи, а также снижения сокращений выявленных участков гладкой мускулатуры и ограничений в спонтанных движениях после введения больших доз высококонцетрированного раствора. Центральная нервная система, периферийная нервная система, почки, а также кровь не подверглись значительным изменениям.
На основании этих результатов можно заключить, что ВВВ не вызывает специфического общего медикаментозного действия.

Moreover, the use of the linear PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) without compression became possible, for example, for the music CD’s, and is as important here, as the Shannon sampling theorem is in the signal theory. MPEG serves normally as the compression technology for the moving pictures, such as video or anime images, MPEG2 is adopted for digital broadcasting and DVD; and the MPEG4 system is used in such fields as streaming over the Internet for the 3rd generation mobile telephony and mobile communication. Digital compression technology for the video signals has become extremely widespread in the recent years. On this background, the capacity of the storage media becomes higher, the network speed rises, and the processor performance grows higher, as the LSI systems scaling increases and the costs decline. Thus, the environment for the systems with video, which require the digital compression, is supported steadily sustainable.

I combined my job as an engineer with translating from English and Japanese into Russian at Kiev Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I qualified at the Chamber as an Attested Translator (self-editing) into Russian. I translated for bureaus, special journals and IT-publishing houses in such fields as computers, electronics, medical technologies, etc.: patents, technical documents, special books and articles, and so on. Now I am sure in my German and translate full-time in Munich.
