Summary:This webinar is designed for freelancers who want to get familiar with CAT Tools in general as well as Translation Memories, and of course with XTM quickly, so that they can start working productively with XTM from day one. After this session, students will be able to work on smaller jobs using basic features for clients who use XTM on a daily basis. They will have access to more job offers and translating/editing opportunities because they will know how to use an increasingly widespread CAT tool.
Description
1 - Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a translation memory (TM) & how to use it
2 - Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a glossary & how to use it
3 - Overview of the XTM application
4 - Creating a project with XTM
5 - Translating files in the XTM workbench making use of the most common features
6 - Checking your translation with XTM
7 - Delivering the finished translation

The objective of this training is not to train attendants to the advanced features of this tool, but to make them more familiar with the possibilities and basic features of XTM 6.2 & to provide them with the basics they need to start using the interface for simple CAT tasks. After this session, students will be able to set up an account with XTM and use the general features of XTM from what a TM is to the output of the final translated document.
Target audience
My session is interesting and useful to anyone and everyone in the translation industry. Whether you are a freelancer starting in the translation industry or an experienced freelancer who wants to expand his/her clients database via the use of an increasingly popular tool. Outsourcers who want to get an overview of what XTM can do for their freelance team members. Project managers that want to learn more about XTM from the freelancer's point of view can also be interested.
Learning objectives
- Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a translation memory (TM)
- Overview of the application
- Translating files in the XTM workbench making use of the most common features

I shall certainly take this point of view into account when delivering 'advanced' level courses on XTM. This course however is about 'Getting started' icon_smile.gif

The course description mentioned several points, remember?

1 - Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a translation memory (TM) & how to use it
2 - Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a glossary & how to use it

This is why I talked about TMs, because it was part of the course description.

One of the objectives of the course was to be able to set up an account. This is why I talked about logins and so on, to make sure every attendee can set up an account after the course.

3 - Overview of the XTM application

This point was covered.

4 - Creating a project with XTM

This point was covered too. You even had screenshots.

5 - Translating files in the XTM workbench making use of the most common features
6 - Checking your translation with XTM
7 - Delivering the finished translation

These points were covered too and I explained in details the most common features. If you consider the webinar is a one hour format, and there was 10 minutes for questions about XTM plus 15 minutes explaining the XTM features as such during the presentation, I should say the webinar is very much matching the course description, don't you think, JohnAlphonse?

Cheers,

Dear Marie,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Trainers are always keen on receiving feedback so that they may adapt their content to attendees' expectations.

Actually, I am very surprised that you didn't expect the first part of the presentation to cover the topic of CAT tools and what a TM is because the course description clearly mentioned the program of study :

You are probably an advanced user of CAT technology, Mary... but this course had no prerequisite and was designed also for people who are 'getting started' with CAT tools.

Nevertheless, I shall certainly take your point of view into account when delivering 'advanced' level courses on XTM.
This course, if you remember the title, is about 'Getting started' and two out of the four learning objectives were:

- Introduction to CAT technologies: what is a translation memory (TM)
- Overview of the application

I believe it is normal to spend the first half of the presentation talking about the first two objectives and the second half of the presentation talking about the other two objectives to make it balanced, don't you think Marie?

Cheers,

Anne-Charlotte
