Hi all,
I'm just starting as a translator and I don't know how to insert the "accent mark" when writing in spanish because my keyboard doesn't include it... Is there another way other than using the "insert-symbol" function in Word?... I want to be able to use it even when I'm not working on a Word document..
I appreciate your help...

"Ctrl" plus the logical symbol on your keyboard will give you most major accents in Western European languages.
For example, to get á:
1. Press Ctrl and '
2. Press a
To get ñ:
1. Press Ctrl and Shift and ` on the far upper left (the tilde is right above it)
2. Press n
It sounds complicated, but once you get used to it, it is really fast.

In Settings / Control Panel / Keyboard choose Language
When in Language, choose Properties and set your Keyborad layout for United States - International. Click OK. The Language set on my computer is English (United States)
When you have done this, it is as simple as using an old typewriter.
For:
1) á, à, é, í, ú - type the accent followed by the letter
2) ã, Ñ, õ - shift ~ and the letter

This way you get all the accents in the different languages:
e.g for é, instead of ampersand, hash 0233 semicolon, put ALT + 0233.
I use a card with the HTML codes on it.

With Multilanguage Support installed in Windows, it is easy to add additional keyboards and switch between keyboards when required. I have several installed (including Spanish, which I don't use very often) and have made out a keyboard plan for each of them to which I refer when necessary.

I tried all the options provided. The problem became when I wanted to post answers for the Kudo questions and trying to include the tilde was not working, it was working on the Word documents but I also wanted to be able to type the tilde in other types of documents.
When I was trying Antonio's suggestion which I couldn't do on my computer (I don't know why) I found a way to set up my keyboard to switch between spanish and english... I have to mention that I use Windows 2003...

These are the steps I took:
Control Panel/Regional Language and Options/Language/Details/Add/Clicked on Spanish (Mexico) from the dropdown menu/on this same window clicked on "Key Settings" and picked the option to "switch between input languages" (this enables me to switch between languages using by clicking on a little tab that appeared at the bottom of my screen)
Now I can type spanish characters without using the ALT or CTRL keys. I just switch to spanish keyboard and use the ":;" key to type the ñ and the "[{" key to type the accent mark (just click on this key and then type the letter).
Anyway, thanks to all of you for your tips!

I've chosen the "United States International" setting in my keyboard setup in the Control Panel. Then when I want to make an accent, I just press the accent and then the vowel. One must get used to using the space bar, though, because if you want to write [comma][a] you need to press [comma][space][a] otherwise you get an a-acute. But I'm used to it and it works wonders. Afrikaans also has quite a few accented letters and this method I have found to be the quickest because I can do it while I type without using the Ctrl or any other special button.
