Source text - English A movement at the edge of her peripheral vision made her turn. High up and towards a roped-off area – for parts of the cathedral were closed off to the shuffling visitors – a small bird had somehow penetrated the interior and was flitting from carved ledge to ledge.
Julia, watching its speckled brownness, felt a school-marmish urge to reprove the bird for its unauthorised entry into the famous church. But on the heels of the schoolmarmishness followed another impulse: a kind of respectful admiration for the audacity of the thing.

No alto e na direção de uma área cercada por corda – pois partes da catedral estavam fechadas ao arrasto dos visitantes – um passarinho penetrara de alguma forma o interior e esvoaçava de um peitoril entalhado a outro.

Source text - English Each of us is immersed in a sea of radio-frequency waves. The invisible electromagnetic energy comes from many sources: broadcast towers, cellular-phone networks and police radio transmissions, among others. Although this radiation may be harmless to our bodies, it can severely inhibit our ability to receive and transmit information. Excess radio energy is a kind of pollution, because it can disrupt useful communications. As the intensity of radio-frequency interference in our environment grows, we have to raise the volume of radio signals so that they can be heard over the electromagnetic background noise. And as our electronic communications become more intense, they simply add to the din of radio interference.

Source text - English What is art good for? The question was in the air in Britain in the 1860s and, according to many commentators, the answer was: not very much. It wasn't art that had made the great industrial towns, laid the railways, dug the canals, expanded the empire and made Britain pre-eminent among nations. Indeed, art seemed capable of sapping the very qualities that had made these achievements possible; prolonged contact with it risked encouraging effeminacy, introspection, homosexuality, gout and defeatism. In 1865, John Bright, MP for Birmingham, described cultured people as a pretentious cabal whose only claim to distinction was "a smattering of the two dead languages of Greek and Latin". The Oxford academic Frederic Harrison held an equally caustic view of the benefits of prolonged communion with literature, history or painting. "Culture is a desirable quality in a critic of new books, and sits well on a possessor of belles lettres," he conceded, but "as applied to everyday life or politics, it means simply a turn for small fault-finding, love of selfish ease, and indecision in action. The man of culture is one of the poorest mortals alive. For simple pedantry and want of good sense no man is his equal. No assumption is too unreal, no end is too unpractical for him."
