Netflix Testing ‘Ultra’ Subscriptions, Which Could Make Users Pay More For the Same Service
While it's only a test for now, "Ultra" appears to allow Netflix to charge more for the same by shuffling its benefits among four tiers.

Netflix is testing a more-expensive subscription plan that could reserve HDR [high-dynamic range] for only its top-tier subscribers. In addition to the streaming service’s offerings of Basic, Standard, and Premium, tech bloggers in Europe spotted a new “Ultra” plan in several countries.
Despite its name, Ultra appears to offer no improvements in service; instead; it allows Netflix to charge more by shuffling its benefits among four tiers. The European tests show a couple of versions of what Ultra could mean: One version removes HDR from all plan levels except Ultra, while another halved the number of screens on which Premium members can watch Ultra HD content. HDR provides more contrast for light and dark images onscreen; Netflix made some of its programming HDR compatible last year.
In the US, a basic plan lets you stream on one device in standard definition; the standard plan ups the devices to two and permits HD; and premium permits four devices and includes Ultra HD.
According to screengrabs from Italian website Tutto Android, Ultra enrollees pay €16.99/month; Premium members pay €13.99. Meanwhile, Cordcutting.com encountered €16.99/month and €19.99/month price tags for the Ultra plan in Germany, depending on what browser was in use.
“We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time,” said a Netflix rep in a statement. “In this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix. Not everyone will see this test and we may not ever offer the specific price points or features included in this test.”
When asked if all current Premium subscribers would lose either Ultra HD ability on two devices, or all HDR capabilities, if the Ultra plan is implemented longterm, Netflix told IndieWire via email, “We don’t disclose details on any active tests,” adding, “We may not actually ever roll out anything we are testing.”
For Americans, a Basic Netflix membership costs $7.99. This October, the Los Gatos, Calif.-headquartered media disruptor raised the price of its other two plans; the Standard subscription increased a dollar, to $10.99/month, while the Premium subscription climbed two dollars to $13.99. Since January 2016, Netflix — which releases very little viewership data — has been available in 190 countries.

‘Anne With an E’ Refresher: Where Season 1 Left Off With the Cuthberts, Gilbert, and More
Plus, what we’d like to see next when Netflix’s Canadian series returns to Avonlea on July 6.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 1 of “Anne With an E,” including the finale.]
It’s been more than year since “Anne With an E” graced the streaming shores of Netflix. The latest adaptation of the L.M. Montgomery period children’s book “Anne of Green Gables” takes the titular heroine to much darker places thanks to series creator Moira Walley-Beckett, who’s known for her writing on “Breaking Bad.” Even though the only Blue Sky found on “Anne With an E” is overhead, the show still puts an edgy spin to the optimism and purity seen in the novel.
In part, these darker sequences serve to give a more realistic picture of what Anne’s life was like growing up as a young woman during Edwardian times as an orphan. But the show also ventured into new territory and explored issues such as sexism, bullying, and prejudice.
As Netflix returns to Avonlea for Season 2, here’s a refresher of where we left off for each of the characters, and what we’d like to see for them next.
Anne Shirley Cuthbert (Amybeth McNulty)
Where We Left Off: The irrepressible storyteller found a real, permanent home at Green Gables. In a departure from the novels, she was also officially adopted by the Cuthberts. Her growth over last year included learning a bit more about sex, being the object of prejudice and gossip, and even starting her period. In the finale, she went to town to help sell of Green Gables’ worldly possessions to save it from ruin.
What We Hope to See Next: The PTSD-style flashbacks from her time in the orphanage and in nightmarish foster homes are tough to watch, but it would be good if Season 2 allowed her to actually confide in someone about them. Other than that, more puffed sleeves and perhaps a figuring out she has warmer feelings for a certain boy.
Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson)
Where We Left Off: The elderly farmer fell for Anne’s chatterbox charms and later made a very bad investment that almost lost the farm. Stress and general old age made him have “an episode of the heart,” which caused the bank to demand its loan back since they had only given Cuthberts money based on his ability to work. As a result, Matthew tried to take his own life, thinking that the life insurance money would save them, but fortunately, he botched that as well. In the finale, he had promised to not kill himself and reconnected with shopkeeper Jeannie (Brenda Bazinet), whom he was sweet on in his youth.
What We Hope to See Next: First and foremost, we wish Matthew continued health, if only to explore that rekindled romance more. But also, it’s fun to see him defy his sister.
Marilla Cuthbert (Geraldine James)
Where We Left Off: Speaking of the other elder Cuthbert, it turns out Marilla was almost engaged to the now-deceased John Blythe. She had turned down his proposal after the death of her older brother Michael because she was “needed at home.” Bittersweet! In the finale, she put an ad in the paper, and two lodgers arrived, which gave Green Gables some extra income. But these are not any ordinary lodgers. (See: Jerry Baynard, below.)
What We Hope to See Next: Whatever is the equivalent of a spa day in Avonlea, Marilla needs that. Between caring for Matthew, Anne, and the new lodgers, she really needs to treat herself for once.
Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann)
Where We Left Off: Anne lost her biggest competition at school when his father died, and Gilbert became an orphan like her. Before taking on the responsibilities on their property, something he wasn’t even sure he ever wanted, he went off to see if he could get work on a steamer ship and find himself. Just before that happened, he and Anne declared a truce on their rivalry.
What We Hope to See Next: This adventure storyline is refreshing, and he could come back with newer, bigger ideas than Avonlea can handle (but not Anne!). Of course, he and Anne have unfinished business once they both grow up a little bit.
Jerry Baynard (Aymeric Jett Montaz)
Where We Left Off: Anne has always bickered with the hired hand who comes from a large, poverty-stricken family. She grew to appreciate him though once they went to town to sell their belongings and the horse. While he was in town though, he was set upon by two thugs who beat him up and stole his money from auctioning the horse. To make things worse, he was about to be let go since the Cuthberts couldn’t afford him. Fortunately, Aunt Josephine provided the money to keep him on. Unfortunately, those two thugs happen to be the lodgers who just arrived at Green Gables in the finale with something up their dirty sleeves.
What We Hope to See Next: As horrible as Anne’s circumstances have been, you’d think she would’ve had more sympathy for Jerry. We’d like to see her check her own privilege and examine her prejudices to fight for better treatment for him. Jerry should be able to sit at the Cuthberts’ table, get some schooling, and even get a real bed if he needs it. We’d also love to learn more about and maybe even meet his family. Perhaps better treatment will come when he realizes who the lodgers are. It should have to come to that, but baby steps. Also, could there be a love triangle with him, Anne, and Gilbert? Who’s to say, but Jerry certainly gets her riled up.
Aunt Josephine Barry (Deborah Grover)
Where We Left Off: The wealthy aunt was taken by Anne’s spirit and imagination and acted as her confidant. She suffered from an unspecified lost love in the past – but the subtext is that Aunt Josephine is a lesbian who isn’t out – and advised Anne not have regrets when it came to romance. But she also encouraged her to be her own person beyond her relationship to men.
What We Hope to See Next: As one of the most progressive characters in the show, it would be fitting if she drove more stories in Avonlea. We’d also like to learn more about her bittersweet past.
Diana Barry (Dalila Bella)
Where We Left Off: Diana has often been Anne’s sidekick in shenanigans, very sweet but not very imaginative on her own. She got drunk on “raspberry cordial,” joined the Story Club to write their own adventures, and even maintained feelings for her “bosom friend” even when her parents banned them from spending time together.
What We Hope to See Next: Diana is perhaps the character who has remained the most true to the novels, and because of that, she’s been sidelined. As another girl who is Anne’s age in the same society, it’d be intriguing to see what life is like from her point of view, especially since she comes from privilege.

Chucky is eyeing a return to the big screen in a major way thanks to an upcoming “Child’s Play” reboot, Collider reports. MGM is reportedly developing a new “Child’s Play” film with help from producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith. The two men were behind last year’s horror sensation “It” and are production the follow-up “It: Chapter Two,” which is now in production. “Polaroid” director Lars Klevberg is helming the “Child’s Play” reboot from a script by “Kung Fury” writer Tyler Burton Smith.
According to Collider, the plan for the “Child’s Play” remake is to set the film in modern day and focus on characters who are teenagers, similar to “Stranger Things” and the Losers’ Club in the “It” franchise. It’s unclear whether or not the villainous doll will be the red-headed Chucky or a different one, although Collider says Chucky is probably the choice producers will settle on in the script. The doll is expected to get a 2018 upgrade and have technologically-advanced features.
“Child’s Play,” directed by Tom Holland, debuted in 1988 and started a franchise that has spawned six additional sequels. The most recent Chucky film was 2017’s “Cult of Chucky.” Don Mancini has served as a screenwriter on every “Child’s Play” installment, including an upcoming television series, but he will not be working on the story for Klevberg’s reboot.
Collider says MGM is trying to keep details around the “Child’s Play” reboot quiet and the film was developed under a different name, similar to how Lionsgate handled Adam Wingard’s “The Woods,” which was revealed just shortly before release to be “Blair Witch.”

처키가 ‘사탄의 인형’ 리부트를 통해 극장가로 컴백할 기회를 노리며 눈을 굴리는 중이라고 콜리더가 발표했다. “Nanette” won’t be like any other stand-up comedy special you’ve seen.
In her first Netflix hour, released last month, Australian Hannah Gadsby delivers both sharp setups and punchlines and a searing indictment of comedy itself, arguing that the genre cannot grapple with trauma.
The first half of “Nanette” falls more within the boundaries of a traditional special, with jokes about penicillin, identity and growing up “a little bit lesbian” in conservative Tasmania. (“I don’t even think lesbian is the right identity for me,” she quips. “I identify as tired.”) But midway through, Gadsby starts methodically dissecting how comedy works to explain why she needs to quit stand-up altogether.
“I built a career out of self-deprecation, and I don’t want to do that anymore,” she says. “Because you do understand what self -deprecation means from somebody who already exists in the margins? It’s not humility. It’s humiliation.”
You’ll laugh, but you also may cry several times while watching “Nanette.” It’s not a comedy special that offers escapist laughs but, instead, demands that the audience not shy away from considering harsh truths.
Weeks after the show premiered on Netflix, fellow comedians are still buzzing about the hour and how it calls into question the common comedic devices performers have relied upon for so long.
“I’ve been a professional comic for 30 years. I’ve been studying comedy for even longer. I thought I had seen everything … until I watched Nanette,” tweeted comedian Kathy Griffin. “I was blown away. I urge you to watch it ASAP – one hour and it’ll change your life.”
“This is one of the most incredible, powerful, wrenching pieces of comedy and art I have ever seen,” tweeted comedian Aparna Nancherla.
“This one’s gonna linger for a while and will influence a whole generation of comedians,” comedian Jenny Yang tweeted. “If I don’t change how I do comedy after seeing her special, why even?”
Recorded at the Sydney Opera House, “Nanette” won best comedy show at Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 before Gadsby brought it to New York City for several months.
In the show, Gadsby presents a treatise on the mythology of being an artist — that to be creative you must suffer — and zeros in on the women made to suffer for the sake of protecting men’s’ reputations. She also explains that comedy needs tension for punchlines to work, but she’s tired of tension. As a child, her very existence created tension, so she learned to use humor to deflect.
Still, Gadsby plays with tension in the special, using silences and alternating between calm setups and explosions of fury for maximum emotional impact.
Other recent specials have showcased comics’ masterful use of timing, silence and discomfort. In her sophomore 2018 Netflix special, “Hard Knock Wife,” Ali Wong quietly and unhurriedly lays the groundwork for her jokes before she explodes into cascading punchlines. And Tig Notaro famously told jokes about her just-received cancer diagnosis to an unsuspecting audience in 2013’s “Live,” greeting their applause with, “Hello! I have cancer, how are ya?”
But Gadsby does something else within “Nanette.” She uses comedic elements like joke callbacks while also breaking comedy into its component parts for the audience.
“I feel like in a comedy show there’s no room for the best part of the story, which is the ending,” she says. “In order to finish on a laugh, you have to end with punchlines.”
So Gadsby goes back and undoes her earlier punchlines. Early in the special, she gets laughs with jokes about a dimwitted, homophobic man at a bus stop and the time she “forgot” to come out to her grandmother. But later, she tells the rest of those real stories, including the devastating parts she had to leave out to get laughs.
She remains in control, bringing in silly asides even as she unleashes anger, like when she skewers comics who turned Monica Lewinsky into “an easy punchline” instead of mocking “the man who abused his power.”
“It’s not my place to be angry on a comedy stage,” she says. “People feel safer when men do the angry comedy; they’re the kings of the genre. When I do it, I’m just a miserable lesbian ruining all the fun and the banter. When men do it, ‘heroes of free speech!’ ”
But even after she showcases the power of her anger, she ends by offering a final argument against anger, as well: “It knows no other purpose than to spread blind hatred, and I want no part of it.”
“I don’t want to unite you with laughter or anger,” she says. “I just needed my story felt and understood.”

그러나 해나 개즈비는 ‘나의 이야기’에서 뭔가 다른 것을 보여준다. 그는 농담에 대한 관객의 리액션 같은 희극 무대의 요소를 사용하는 반면 그 요소 요소를 파괴하기도 한다.
“저는 코미디 쇼에 클라이맥스를 위한 자리 같은 건 없다고 생각합니다. 보통 거기서 이야기가 끝나죠. 모두가 웃는 포인트에서 이야기를 마치려면 무조건 펀치라인에서 끝내야 합니다.”
이제 해나 개즈비는 자신이 이전에 던진 펀치라인으로 돌아가 그걸 다시 되돌린다. 쇼의 초반부에 그는 그의 할머니에게 커밍아웃하는 일을 그만 ‘잊었다’고 말하던 즈음에 버스 정류장에서 마주친 멍청한 호모포비아 남성에 대한 농담으로 웃음을 주었다. 그러나 이번에 그는 당시 실제로 일어났던 일의 나머지 이야기를 들려준다. 웃음을 위해 제외시킬 수 밖에 없었던 충격적인 부분이 포함되었음은 물론이다.

“이 무대 위에서 분노하는 건 제 몫이 아닙니다. 사람들은 남자들이 예의 그 언성을 높이는 코미디를 할 때 더 편안함을 느낍니다. 그들이야말로 이 분야의 왕들이니까요. 제가 그런 일을 할 때면, 저는 그저 모든 개그와 농담을 망쳐버리는 비참한 레즈비언이죠. 남자들이 똑 같은 일을 하면 ‘파격적 개그의 귀재’가 되지만요!"
