Italian to English: S.E.D Air Monitoring Brochure General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - Italian S.E.D. Air Monitoring
1. SISTEMA ESPERTO PER IL MONITORAGGIO DELLE EMISSIONI ODORIGENE DA DISCARICA

Translation - English S.E.D. Air Monitoring
1. An expert system for monitoring odor emissions from landfills.
2. Poor management of landfills causes chemical air pollution and discomfort. The extent and effect of these emissions on people’s health is still difficult to quantify. The S.E.D. project, using the services of European Infrastructure on research of biodiversity and ecosystems (LifeWatch), along with the expertise of the CETMA Consortium, proposes to first create of a network of sensors that would monitor the emissions of odorous substances in the air. Secondly, to create a mobile application for collecting data from the people, along with a web platform for the integration and use of this data, including that on biodiversity, collected through ‘people science’.
The project aims to quantitatively measure the discomfort of people due to air pollution from landfills, to provide responses to public administration regarding the impact of such pollution from the perspective of its citizens, and loss of biodiversity. It also aims to equip landfill managers with tools to improve or mitigate these impacts.
The project development is based on the need of the municipality of San Cesario Lecce, that wants to give answers to its people regarding the poor quality of air that is perceived as a result of poor management of landfill sites in the nearby municipality of Cavallino.
