Decide what you are comfortable with in your relationship
Know what you are and are NOT willing to do in relationships. Examples:
¥ You feel comfortable holding hands with someone you like, but you do not feel comfortable kissing.
¥ You can walk home from school with him, but you do not want to be alone in his house together.
¥ You want to spend time with your friends, but you do not want to drink.
Set your boundaries.
Setting healthy boundaries protects you. A “boundary” describes a separation between what you are and are NOT willing to do. When you share your boundaries with your friends or romantic partner, you are telling them that to treat you well, they must respect those boundaries and not pressure you or break them.
Share your boundaries.
Recognizing your needs and setting and communicating healthy boundaries in relationships will protect you physically and emotionally. It is your choice to set the boundaries you want. It is also your responsibility to communicate openly with your friends or romantic partner about your boundaries and to ask about their boundaries. This is how you will show respect to others.
A partner who respects your boundaries:
¥ Makes you feel comfortable being yourself
¥ Respects your feelings, opinions, wishes, friends, and family
¥ Listens and accepts when you say “no”
¥ Listens and accepts if you want to end the relationship
A partner who DOES NOT respect your boundaries:
¥ Threatens you, breaks things, or scares you when you say “no”
¥ Pushes and pressures you when you express a boundary (saying “If you loved me, you would do…”)
¥ Demands to know who you speak to, what you say, or decides how you should dress or behave
¥ Says he will be very angry if you leave the relationship, cannot live without you, or does not agree to leave you alone when asked
¥ Frightens you, makes you feel uncomfortable, or feel that you cannot be yourself
