Source text - English The Dorian mode is a 7-note scale that is the second mode of the major scale. This means that if you are in the key of C major, the Dorian mode would start on the note D, the second note in the key of C. It shares the same notes as the parent key, D Dorian has the same notes as C Ionian for example, but the chord that is built from Dorian is unique to that mode.
In the example below you can see the notes of the D Dorian mode, which is the same as a C major scale but running from D to D instead of C to C. When stacked in thirds, the Dorian mode produces a m13 chord, and so it is commonly used to improvise over m7, m9, m6 and m13 chords in a jazz context.
