Source text - English Japanese auto maker Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it would raise the monthly base salary for workers by 4,000 yen, its biggest hike in over a decade, joining other major domestic firms in agreeing to larger rises in annual wage talks.
The rise was short of union demands for 6,000 yen per month, but up from last year's 2,700 yen hike. Earlier, electronics firm Panasonic Corp and auto maker Nissan Motor Co Ltd announced monthly base-pay rises of 3,000 yen and 5,000 yen respectively.
Higher wages are considered key to sustaining growth and decisively ending deflation in the world's third-biggest economy. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government has been calling for Japan Inc - sitting on record levels of cash amid hefty profits - to do its part in stimulating the economy and lift workers' pay.

Translation - English Japanese government should not take a measure which just protects Japanese agriculture, but should utilize huge free trade area to grow Japanese economy. Considering the broad agreement of Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the government set up head office for TPP countermeasures composed of all Cabinet ministers. They will decide the outline of policy including enhancement of agriculture within this year.
After TPP enters into force, the government will gradually reduce or eliminate tariffs of over 400 agricultural and fishery products. While consumers can benefit from increased cheap imported goods, domestic farmers cannot avoid damages. It is understandable that the government provides certain level of support for farmers to ease impact. But increase of agricultural subsidies is not a fundamental solution. The government need to create the environment that Japanese farmers can succeed against international competition, by increasing agricultural productivity.
Prime minister Abe said appropriately, "we will make TPP a chance to change Japanese agriculture to be proactive". In 1993, Japanese government spent 6 trillion yen to take measure against partial opening of the rice market following the Uruguay Round. However, it had little effect because most of the money was used for other services such us agricultural public work.
