English to Italian: Kanner’s Report Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - English It is likely that reports of so-called feral children represent the first reports of children with autism (Candland 1995, Wolff 2004). Although intellectual disability had been recognized since antiquity (Harris 2006), interest in it and child development in general began to increase with the Enlightenment and the debate of the role of nature versus nurture in child development (Hunt 1961). By the mid 1800s, interest in psychiatric problems in children grew, and continuities with adult forms of mental illness were suggested (Maudsley 1867), although little provision was made for recognizing the relevance of developmental factors in syndrome expression. The late 1800s, in particular, was a time of great activity in psychiatry taxonomy, with the recognition of dementia praecox (now termed schizophrenia; Bleuler 1911) and manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder; Kraepelin 1921). These concepts were rapidly extended to children (e.g., dementia praecossima;
de Sanctis 1906). The early tendency to equate severe psychiatric disturbance in childhood with adult schizophrenia later became a problem for recognizing the validity of autism as a distinct diagnostic category.
Leo Kanner, an ´emigr´e from Austria, was recruited to Johns Hopkins Hospital to bridge the fields of psychiatry and pediatrics. He wrote the first textbook on child psychiatry and in 1943 published
the classic paper “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact.” This paper presented 11 children whoKanner believed entered the worldwithout the predisposition to be social.He framed his
description developmentally, notingGesell’s (1934) description of early infant social development; by a few weeks after birth babies typically were smiling responsively and were socially engaged.
Kanner provided careful, factually based descriptions of the cases and then attempted a synthesis in his overall description of the condition. He believed that in addition to autism (being cut off
from the world of people), the subjects also had trouble in dealing with change in the nonsocial world. Kanner termed this “resistance to change” or “insistence on sameness.” In his view, some of
the unusual autistic self-stimulatory behaviors (hand flapping and body rocking, for example) were attempts on the child’s part to “maintain sameness.”Although he did not recognize communication
problems as an essential feature of autism, he did observe that three of the subjects did not speak at all and that the others had language problems. These difficulties included echolalia, idiosyncratic and extremely literal language, and difficulties with pronoun use. His observations were prescient in many ways, as recent research efforts in autism have focused on the apparent
paradox of overengagement with the nonsocial world and lack of interest in the social world (Klin 2005a,b; McPartland et al. 2012). Kanner indicated that he believed the condition to be congenital
(but did note a history of apparent regression in one of the cases).
Some aspects of Kanner’s description came to be sources of early confusion in the field. His use of the word autism did convey the aloneness of the cases. It also confused autism with schizophrenia,
in which “autistic thinking” had been described some years before. His impression of normal intellectual potential in autism was based on an awareness that, on some parts of tests of intelligence
(typically nonverbal, memory-based tasks), children with autism did well, but on parts involving language and symbolic thinking, they did poorly. Kanner’s impression was that if children performed
as well on the latter areas as the former, they would function in the normal range. It took many years before psychologists appreciated that for children with autism, marked scatter in skill development was the rule, poor test performance reflected lack of ability rather than “negativism,” and overall IQ scores (even while representing the average of very discrepant abilities) often fell in the intellectually deficient range (Goldstein et al. 2009). In a minority of cases, an unusual islet of high ability might be seen (Hermelin 2001). Kanner noted the attractive appearance of his subjects
and emphasized that they were had no obvious physical indicators or dysmorphology; only as the children with autism were followed did it become clear that they were at increased risk for developing seizure disorder and that autism was associated with a small number of highly genetic conditions (Volkmar et al. 2013c). Finally, in Kanner’s initial case series, the parents of children with autism tended to be highly successful and accomplished people; there was little awareness of the potential for selection bias (i.e., that only well-informed and successful parents would be able to find the one child psychiatrist in the country). As a result, the impression in the 1950s and 1960s was that autism was a disorder of well-educated and high-status families, and this in turn led to an impression that experience or deviant parenting might play a role in pathogenesis (Bettleheim 1967). Subsequent work clarified that children with autism are observed in all socioeconomic status groups (Wing 1980) and that autism is a brain-based disorder with a strong genetic component (Rutter & Thupar 2013).

Source text - English In the majority of head injuries, the brain is accelerated and decelerated within the skull. Imagine what happens if you shake up a soft blancmange in a hard box – it shears, tears, and cracks.
The injury is in two parts – primary and secondary injury.
Primary damage
(a) Diffuse axonal injury. At the moment of impact, the brain may
strain or tear, and the microscopic nerve fibres, connections and axonal sheaths are stretched and ruptured.
(b) Bruising (contusion). Most common where the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain crash into the hard, bony ridges of the inside of the skull.
(c) Primary bleeding and blood clots (haemorrhage and haematoma). If an artery or other blood vessel tears and a blood clot forms, this may pressurise or squash the brain.
Secondary damage
(a) Brain swelling (oedema). The brain may swell, which reduces the flow of blood and oxygen to the cells of the brain and raises intercranial pressure.
(b) Infections. If the skull is fractured, germs may infect the brain.
(c) Breathing problems (anoxia). If there are injuries to other parts of the body, such as the heart or lungs, breathing difficulties may reduce the flow of oxygen in the blood to the brain.
(d) Secondary bleeding. A slow bleed may be detected only later (subdural, extradural, or intracerebral haematoma).
(e) Cellular changes. A cascade of biochemical events occur, including the release of various toxic neurotransmitters – glutamate, calcium and free radicals – which can lead to cell death.

Source text - English Of all the emotional wounds we suffer in life, rejection is perhaps
the most common. By the time we reach middle school
we’ve already been turned down for play dates, picked last for
teams, not invited to birthday parties, dropped by old friends who
joined new cliques, and teased or bullied by classmates. We finally
get through the gauntlet of childhood rejections only to discover
that an entirely new array of rejection experiences awaits us as
adults. We get turned down by potential dates, refused by potential
employers, and snubbed by potential friends. Our spouses rebuff
our sexual advances, our neighbors give us the cold shoulder, and
family members shut us out of their lives.
Rejections are the psychological cuts and scrapes that tear our
emotional skin and penetrate our flesh. Some rejections are so severe they create deep psychological gashes that “bleed” profusely
and require urgent attention. Others are like emotional paper cuts
that sting quite a bit but bleed only a little. One might expect that,
given the frequency with which we encounter rejection in one
form or another, we’d have a clear understanding and appreciation
of its impact on our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. But such is
not the case. We drastically underestimate the pain rejections elicit
and the psychological wounds they create.
The Psychological Wounds Rejection Inflicts
Rejections can cause four distinct psychological wounds, the severity of which depends on the situation and our emotional health at
the time. Specifically, rejections elicit emotional pain so sharp it affects our thinking, floods us with anger, erodes our confidence and self- esteem, and destabilizes our fundamental feeling of belonging.
Many of the rejections we experience are comparatively mild
and our injuries heal with time. But when left untreated, even the
wounds created by mild rejections can become “infected” and
cause psychological complications that seriously impact our mental
well- being.
When the rejections we experience are substantial,
the urgency of treating our wounds with emotional first aid is far
greater. This not only minimizes the risk of “infections” or complications but also accelerates our emotional healing process. In order to administer emotional first aid and successfully treat the four wounds rejection causes, we need a clear understanding of each of them and a full appreciation of how our emotions, thought processes, and behaviors are damaged when we experience rejections.
1. Emotional Pain: Why Even Stupid Rejections Smart a Lot
Imagine you’re sitting in a waiting room with two other strangers.
One of them spots a ball on the table, picks it up, and tosses it to
the other. That person then smiles, looks over, and tosses the ball
to you. Let’s assume your tossing and catching abilities are up to
the task. You toss the ball back to the first person, who quickly
tosses it to the second. But then instead of tossing the ball to you,
the second person tosses it back to the first person, cutting you out
of the game. How would you feel in that situation? Would your
feelings be hurt? Would it affect your mood? What about your self-
esteem?
Most of us would scoff at the idea. Two strangers didn’t pass me
a stupid ball in a waiting room, big deal! Who cares? But when psychologists
investigated this very situation, they found something
quite remarkable. We do care, far more than we realize. The ball-
tossing
scenario is a well- researched
psychology experiment in
which the two “strangers” are actually research confederates. The
“subject” (who thinks they are all waiting to be called for an entirely
different experiment) always gets excluded after the first or
second round of ball tossing. Dozens of studies have demonstrated
that people consistently report feeling significant emotional pain as
a result of being excluded from the ball- tossing
game.
What makes these findings remarkable is that compared to
most of the rejections we experience in life, being excluded by two
strangers tossing a ball is about as mild as rejection gets. If such a
trivial experience can elicit sharp emotional pain (as well as drops
in mood and even self- esteem)
we can begin to appreciate how
painful truly meaningful rejections often are. That is why getting
dumped by someone we’re dating, getting fired from our job, or
discovering that our friends have been meeting up without us can
have such a huge impact on our emotional well- being.
Indeed, what separates rejection from almost every other negative
emotion we encounter in life is the magnitude of the pain it
elicits. We often describe the emotional pain we experience after a
significant rejection as analogous to being punched in the stomach
or stabbed in the chest. True, few of us have actually been stabbed
in the chest, but when psychologists asked people to compare the
pain of rejection to physical pains they had experienced, they rated
their emotional pain as equal in severity to that associated with
natural childbirth and cancer treatments! As a counterpoint, consider
that other emotionally painful experiences, such as intense
disappointment, frustration, or fear, while highly unpleasant, pale
in comparison to rejection when it comes to the sheer visceral pain
they cause.
But why do rejections hurt so much more than other emotional
wounds?
The answer lies in our evolutionary past. Humans are social
animals; being rejected from our tribe or social group in our precivilized
past would have meant losing access to food, protection,
and mating partners, making it extremely difficult to survive. Being
ostracized would have been akin to receiving a death sentence.
Because the consequences of ostracism were so extreme, our
brains developed an early- warning
system to alert us when we
were at risk for being “voted off the island” by triggering sharp
pain whenever we experienced even a hint of social rejection.
In fact, brain scans show that the very same brain regions get
activated when we experience rejection as when we experience
physical pain. Remarkably, the two systems are so tightly linked
that when scientists gave people acetaminophen (Tylenol) before
putting them through the dastardly ball- tossing
rejection experiment, they reported significantly less emotional pain than people who were not given a pain reliever. Sadly, other negative emotions like embarrassment do not share these characteristics, rendering Tylenol ineffective when we get the date wrong for our office Halloween party and show up to work dressed like Marge Simpson.

Per fornire il primo soccorso emotivo e curare efficacemente le quattro ferite provocate dal rifiuto, dobbiamo innanzitutto conoscerle bene e capire a fondo come le nostre emozioni, i nostri processi di pensiero e i nostri comportamenti ne siano condizionati.
1. Il dolore psicologico: perché anche un rifiuto banale provoca un dolore acuto
Immagina di essere seduto in una sala d'attesa insieme ad altre due persone che non conosci. Una vede una palla su un tavolo, la prende e la lancia all'altra. L'altra sorride, si guarda intorno e la passa a te. Tu la tiri alla prima persona e questa la passa di nuovo velocemente alla seconda. Ma a questo punto, invece di passarla a te, la seconda persona la lancia alla prima, escludendoti dal gioco. Come ti sentiresti in questa situazione? Sarebbe una ferita per i tuoi sentimenti? Il tuo umore cambierebbe? E la tua autostima?
Alla maggior parte di noi verrebbe da ridere: “Due sconosciuti non mi hanno passato una palla del cavolo in una sala d'attesa: accidenti che disgrazia! Cosa vuoi che mi importi?”. Ma quando gli psicologi hanno studiato esattamente questa situazione, hanno scoperto qualcosa di alquanto notevole1. Ci importa eccome! Molto più di quanto siamo capaci di ammettere. Lo scenario del gioco con la palla è un esperimento psicologico ben rodato in cui i due “estranei” sono in realtà complici del ricercatore. Il “soggetto” (che pensa che anche gli altri due aspettino, come lui, di partecipare a un altro esperimento di tutt'altro genere) viene sempre escluso dopo uno o due giri di passaggi. Da decine di studi emerge lo stesso risultato: i soggetti riferiscono regolarmente di provare un dolore emotivo significativo a causa dell'esclusione da questo gioco.
L'aspetto degno di nota di questa scoperta è che, rispetto alla maggior parte dei rifiuti di cui facciamo esperienza nella nostra vita, essere esclusi da un gioco con la palla tra due estranei è un'esperienza di ben poco conto. Se un'esperienza così banale può provocare un dolore emotivo acuto (oltre che un calo di umore e perfino di autostima), possiamo cominciare a capire quanto siano in realtà dolorose le esperienze di rifiuto che contano davvero. È per questo che il fatto di essere scaricati dalla persona con cui stiamo uscendo o subire un licenziamento o scoprire che i nostri amici si vedono senza di noi può avere un impatto enorme sul nostro benessere psicologico.
In realtà, ciò che distingue il rifiuto da quasi tutte le altre emozioni negative che incontriamo nella vita è la forza del dolore che esso suscita. Sovente descriviamo il dolore emotivo che proviamo dopo avere subito un rifiuto importante come qualcosa di analogo a un pugno nello stomaco o una pugnalata nel petto. È vero che pochi di noi hanno preso veramente una pugnalata in petto ma quando gli psicologi hanno chiesto ad alcune persone di confrontare il dolore del rifiuto con qualche dolore fisico conosciuto per esperienza diretta, gli interrogati hanno paragonato la forza del dolore emotivo provato a quella del parto e della terapia del cancro2 Per contrasto, si consideri che altre esperienze emotivamente dolorose ‒ come una paura, una frustrazione o una delusione intensa ‒ pur essendo assai sgradevoli, non sono neppure paragonabili all'esperienza del rifiuto.
Ma per quale motivo le esperienze di rifiuto sono molto più dolorose delle altre ferite emotive?
La risposta si trova nel nostro passato evolutivo3. L'uomo è un animale sociale; essere rifiutati dalla propria tribù o dal proprio gruppo sociale, nel nostro passato precivilizzato, avrebbe significato perdere l'accesso al cibo, alla protezione e ai possibili partner di accoppiamento, rendendo così estremamente difficile la sopravvivenza. Essere emarginati sarebbe stato più o meno come ricevere una condanna a morte. Poiché le conseguenze dell'emarginazione erano così estreme, il nostro cervello ha sviluppato un sistema di allarme che ci avvertiva quando rischiavamo di “essere nominati”, scatenando un forte dolore ogni volta che percepivamo la minima ombra di rifiuto sociale.4
In effetti, le scansioni cerebrali evidenziano che quando subiamo un rifiuto si attivano le stesse aree cerebrali che si attivano quando proviamo un dolore fisico.5 La cosa straordinaria è che i due sistemi sono così strettamente connessi tra loro che, quando i ricercatori hanno somministrato ai soggetti sperimentali dell'acetaminofene (in forma di Tylenol, equivalente alla nostra Tachipirina), prima di sottoporli all'esperienza dell'ignobile esclusione dal gioco con la palla, essi hanno riferito di avere provato meno dolore emotivo rispetto a quelli che non avevano assunto un analgesico.6 Purtroppo altre emozioni spiacevoli come l'imbarazzo non condividono questa caratteristica e così la Tachipirina non attenuerà la nostra pena se ci presenteremo in ufficio vestiti da Marge Simpson convinti che ci sia la festa di Halloween nel giorno sbagliato.
English to Italian: How Education Changes: Considerations of History, Science, and Values Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English The transmission of knowledge and skills to the next generation, the process of education in formal and informal settings, is inextricably bound with the emergence of Homo sapiens over the last several hundred thousand years (Bruner 1960; Donald 1991; Tomasello 2000). Formal schools, however, are just a few thousand years old; and the notion of universal education, in which all young persons in a society receive several years of competent schooling, is still a distant dream in many corners of the globe (Bloom, 2003; Bloom and Cohen, 2001).
For the most part, institutions change slowly. Such gradual change may be a positive element. The practices associated with an institution tend to be worked out by trial and error over long periods of time. While such experimentation does not guarantee a stronger and more effective institution, at least the most problematic structures and procedures are eliminated. When it comes to educational institutions--which have come to bear a primary responsibility for the intellectual and moral health of the next generation--such conservatism is especially to be recommended. We do not--or at least we should not want to-- sacrifice our children to the latest fad, On occasion, shock treatments are administrated to an educational system--for example, consider the dramatic changes that took place in Japan after the Second World War or in China following the Communist Revolution in I949. Such changes may achieve their initial goal. But less welcome consequences can also occur; for example, hiding large parts of history in the case of Japan, alienating children from their parents in the case of the Cultural Revolution in China.
Education stands out in one crucial way from most other societal institutions. Put directly, education is fundamentally and primarily a "values undertaking," and educational values are perennially in disputed. Members of a society can reach agreement with relative ease about the purpose of medicine--to deliver high-quality health care to all citizens; nor need the purposes of the military or the monetary system be perennially disputed. However, except for certain fundamentals, the purposes of education, and the notion of what it means to be an educated person, are subjects about which individuals--both professional and lay--hold distinctive and often conflicting views. Clearly, the values that undergirded the educational system in imperial Japan or China differed radically from those that came to motivate the system in a fledgling democratic society like Japan in 195o or an experimental socialistic society in China at the same time. As I once put it whimsically, "in the United States in the early 21st century, how could we possibly create an educational system that would please the three Jesses--conservative North Carolina senator Jesse Helms, charismatic African American leader Jesse Jackson, and flamboyant Minnesota wrestler-turned-governor Jesse Ventura?"
While the gradual change of educational institutions can readily be justified, we must also ask what can, and should, happen to educational institutions when dramatic alterations take place in the ambient society. Such changes can take place as a result of a shift in values: that is what prompted changes in East Asia a half century ago. However, changes can also take place as a result of scientific findings that alter our understanding of the human mind or because of broader historical forces, like globalization, that affect regions all over the world. At such times, the tension between the pace of institutional change, on one hand, and the pace of scientific discoveries and historical forces, on the other, can become acute.
For much of its relatively short history, formal schooling has been characterized by a religious orientation. Teachers were typically members of a religious order; the texts to be read and mastered were the holy books; and the lessons of school were ethical and moral in character. Religious instruction, or a state religion, is still common in many European countries, while the "state religion" of communism is only gradually waning as an educational staple on the Chinese mainland. (It remains alive and well in Cuba.)
Yet, despite the persistence of such religious or quasi-religious strains, most of the developed world, and much of the developing world, has converged on a form of precollegiate education that is largely secular in thrust. The major burden of the first years of school--the primary grades--is threefold: (1) to introduce children to the basic literacy systems of the ambient culture--the "three R's," to use the English parlance; (2) to acclimate youngsters to the milieu of decontextualized learning, where--in contradistinction to the learning that is most readily accomplished by human beings--one learns about events and concepts outside .of their naturally occurring contexts (Bruner, Olver, and Greenfield 1966; Resnick 1987); (3) to give children the opportunity to play and work together civilly with those individuals with whom they can expect to grow and eventually spend their adult years. While such processes used to begin around the age of six or seven, it is notable that many countries now attempt to inculcate these skills in the preschool years, sometimes as early as the fourth or fifth year of life.
Translation - Italian La trasmissione della conoscenza e delle abilità alle nuove generazioni, il processo di insegnamento in contesti formali e informali, è inestricabilmente legato all'emergere dell’Homo Sapiens nelle ultime centinaia di migliaia di anni (Bruner 1960; Donald 1991; Tomasello 2000). Le istituzioni scolastiche, invece, datano poche centinaia di anni; e l’idea di istruzione universale, secondo la quale tutti i giovani all’interno di una società dovrebbero ricevere diversi anni di insegnamento qualificato, in molte parti del mondo è ancora una chimera (Bloom, 2003; Bloom and Cohen, 2001).
Nella maggior parte dei casi le istituzioni cambiano lentamente. Questa gradualità può costituire un fattore positivo. Le pratiche di una istituzione tendono a perfezionarsi nell'arco di lunghi periodi di tempo attraverso un processo di prove ed errori. Una sperimentazione di questo tipo, anche se non assicura un’istituzione più forte ed efficace, almeno elimina le strutture e le procedure più problematiche. Questo conservatorismo è altamente raccomandabile nel caso delle istituzioni educative – che hanno assunto nel tempo una responsabilità fondamentale nei confronti della salute intellettuale e morale delle nuove generazioni. Nessuno è disposto a sacrificare i propri figli per l’ultima moda del momento – o almeno nessuno dovrebbe desiderare di farlo. Di tanto in tanto, a un sistema educativo vengono somministrate delle cure drastiche – pensiamo, per esempio, ai drammatici cambiamenti avvenuti in Giappone dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale o in Cina in seguito alla Rivoluzione Comunista nel 1949. Può succedere che questi cambiamenti raggiungano il loro obiettivo iniziale, ma possono anche verificarsi delle conseguenze meno piacevoli, quali la negazione di una grossa fetta di storia, come nel caso del Giappone, o l'alienazione dei bambini dai loro genitori, come nel caso della Rivoluzione Culturale in Cina.
L’istruzione si distingue in modo deciso dalla maggior parte delle altre istituzioni sociali. Essa è fondamentalmente e principalmente un'"impresa di valori" ["values undertaking"], e i valori educativi sono messi perennemente in discussione. I membri di una società possono accordarsi senza grosse difficoltà su quale sia il fine della medicina – fornire un sistema sanitario altamente qualificato a tutti i cittadini. Se il cambiamento graduale delle istituzioni scolastiche trova facilmente una giustificazione, dobbiamo chiederci anche che cosa può e dovrebbe succedere a queste istituzioni quando si verificano dei mutamenti drammatici nel contesto sociale. Trasformazioni di questo genere possono essere il risultato di un cambiamento di valori, come è successo in Asia Orientale mezzo secolo fa. I cambiamenti, ad ogni modo, possono anche dipendere da scoperte scientifiche che modificano la nostra comprensione della mente umana o da forze storiche di più ampia portata come la globalizzazione, che coinvolge ogni regione del pianeta. In queste circostanze, la tensione fra il ritmo del cambiamento istituzionale, da una parte, e quello delle scoperte scientifiche e delle forze storiche, dall’altra, può essere violenta.
L’insegnamento scolastico formale è stato caratterizzato per gran parte della sua “breve” storia da un orientamento religioso. Gli insegnanti erano normalmente membri di un ordine religioso, i testi che bisognava leggere e conoscere approfonditamente erano quelli sacri e le lezioni a scuola erano di carattere etico e morale. L’insegnamento religioso, o la religione di stato, sono ancora comuni in molti Paesi europei, mentre la “religione di stato" del comunismo come elemento basilare dell’istruzione è in graduale declino nel continente cinese. Eppure, nonostante il persistere di queste sollecitazioni religiose o pseudo tali, gran parte del mondo sviluppato e molti dei Paesi in via di sviluppo si sono incontrati in una forma di istruzione preuniversitaria che è nella sostanza ampiamente laica. Il compito principale della scuola primaria è triplice: 1) iniziare i bambini ai sistemi di alfabetizzazione elementare della propria cultura – le “tre erre” come dicono gli inglesi1, 2) abituarli all’ambiente dell'apprendimento decontestualizzato, in cui gli eventi e i concetti vengono appresi fuori dai contesti in cui avvengono naturalmente – in contrasto con l’apprendimento naturale (Bruner, Olver, and Greenfield 1966; Resnick 1987), 3) dare loro l’opportunità di giocare e di lavorare civilmente assieme agli altri bambini con cui ci si aspetta di vederli crescere ed eventualmente passare gli anni dell’età adulta. Questi processi normalmente iniziano attorno ai sei o sette anni, ma bisogna notare che adesso molti Paesi cercano di inculcare queste abilità nella fase prescolastica, anticipandole a volte fino al quarto o quinto anno di età.
