Source text - Italian La città scorreva veloce attraverso il vetro della metro.
Osservavo il cielo di Tokyo all'avanzare del tramonto: che fosse estate o inverno, la sera sopraggiungeva inaspettata nel tardo pomeriggio, ignara della moltitudine di persone che si affrettavano in massa per tutti gli angoli dell'immensa città, ognuno perso nei propri pensieri e noncurante di chi gli era attorno. Da lontano, sembravano tutti delle piccole formiche, ognuna uguale all'altra.
Guardando i grattacieli in lontananza, non potevo fare a meno di provare un senso di libertà e completezza, come se non ci fosse nessun altro luogo al mondo in cui avrebbe potuto compiersi il mio destino.
Nel vagone regnava un silenzio tranquillizzante, naturale, interrotto sporadicamente soltanto dal fruscio delle uniformi degli studenti di ritorno da scuola o dal leggero russare dei pendolari, che suggeriva ai presenti la sacralità del riposo tanto agognato. Quest'atmosfera sonnolenta e il colore indefinito del cielo si mescolavano perfettamente, infondendomi una sensazione di pura felicità. Mi ricordava le domeniche pigre e sincere della mia infanzia, quando andavo con i miei genitori in gita in campagna o nei boschi.
Ogni tanto, all'improvviso, quei ricordi riaffioravano non appena il mio sguardo si posava su un particolare insignificante come lo svolazzare del vestito di una signora di mezza ètà; il delicato petalo di un fiore che si fa spazio nell'asfalto; oppure ancora i raggi di sole che filtrano attraverso il ramo di un albero.
Gli echi delle risate di quei tempi passati risuonavano nella mia testa, leggeri come il rumore di passi lontani.
Essendo una città enorme, per attraversarla tutta ci vuole più di un'ora. In questo tragitto ho il tempo di leggere un libro o di perdermi semplicemente nei miei pensieri, come quel giorno.
E' strano come nei tempi morti nascano le idee più brillanti, forse perché la mente è totalmente rilassata e spoglia di tutte le costrizioni della vita quotidiana.
Infatti, era stato proprio in uno di quei momenti che avevo capito che volevo cambiare lavoro: in un attimo, tutto mi era apparso semplice e ovvio; il mattino dopo ero andata dal mio superiore e mi ero licenziata.
Ai tempi del liceo non ero così impulsiva, anzi, il minimo cambiamento mi procurava ansia, e preferivo adattarmi a una situazione scomoda piuttosto che rischiare di fare un salto nel buio e pentirmi della mia scelta.
Ma l'ètà, oltre ai segni visibili, porta anche la saggezza, il che, per una mente elastica come la mia, comportava la necessità di valutare e bilanciare i pro e i contro della mia vita, anche se ciò voleva dire prendere una scelta che molte persone avrebbero giudicato "avventata".
In quel momento sentivo che la mia felicità era più importante della stabilità apparente di un anonimo posto da office lady .
Mio padre non l'aveva presa bene.
"Keiko, ma per cosa hai studiato tutto quel tempo alla Todai ?" mi apostrofò mio padre durante una delle mie sporadiche visite a casa sua.
"Papà, non preoccuparti, è solo temporaneo…" risposi io, cercando di mostrare una sicurezza che non avevo.
"Una ragazza per bene non si comporta così. Lo sai quanto mi è costato trovarti quel posto nella ditta A. Sono davvero molto deluso" continuò, ignorando i miei tentativi di tranquillizzarlo. "Se vai avanti così, non avrò mai la gioia di vederti sistemata. Lo sai che, da quando è morta tua madre, la mia unica ragione di vita è assicurarti un buon futuro".
"Papà, per favore, me l'hai già detto tante volte. La mamma è morta ormai da tre anni, ho imparato a cavarmela da sola. Sono una donna cresciuta, e per di più ho messo da parte un po' di denaro per potermi permettere di cercare con calma un altro lavoro. E poi, le azioni che abbiamo investito in borsa stanno fruttando bene, non è vero?".
Il mio scopo sembrava raggiunto...Quando giocavo la carta delle azioni, mio padre si gonfiava d'orgoglio e iniziava a recitare un monologo apparentemente senza fine.
"Sì, è vero. Modestamente, sono stato molto accorto. Lo sapevo che sarebbe venuta la crisi! Si sentiva nell'aria. Vedi, Keiko, io non ho studiato quanto te. Non ho avuto le tue stesse possibilità. Eppure, da semplice impiegato, sono riuscito a fare carriera e ho imparato da solo a investire in borsa. I giovani di adesso sono diversi…non hanno più una tempra forte come una volta, non vogliono sacrificarsi, non sanno cosa sia l'impegno…".
Ogni volta mi ripeteva quelle che erano, a suo dire, delle perle di saggezza.
Da quando eravamo rimasti soli, il nostro rapporto era cambiato totalmente.
Sin da piccola avevo avuto terrore del suo giudizio, e avrei fatto qualsiasi cosa per compiacerlo: era per questo motivo che mi ero iscritta all'università.
Se avessi potuto decidere autonomamente, avrei raccolto le mie cose più care e sarei partita per l'Europa per intraprendere la carriera artistica: volevo diventare una pittrice.
Ma la malattia di mia madre era arrivata come un fulmine a ciel sereno, destabilizzando il nostro equilibrio familiare, e a quel punto non me la sentii di abbandonare un uomo di mezza età, che era passato direttamente dalle cure premurose di sua madre a quelle della moglie, totalmente a se stesso. Ormai cominciava a diventare vecchio.
Forse non sarò una figlia modello, però il senso di pietà filiale lo posseggo ancora. La conseguenza è stata che mio padre pian piano ha iniziato a vedermi come una figura di riferimento, e, incredibilmente, ad aprirsi, comunicandomi i suoi sentimenti, al punto che il suo ruolo di padre padrone, tipico dell'uomo giapponese, è rimasto solamente l'ombra di se stesso, un involucro vuoto da mostrare in società.
Mi sento un po' come una sostituta della mamma, ma con scarsi risultati.
Finita l'università, infatti, sono andata a vivere lontana da lui, trasferendomi in un quartiere alla moda della capitale, con la scusa che la sede della ditta che mi aveva assunta era troppo lontana da casa nostra.
In realtà non era la prima volta che andavo a vivere da sola. Avevo già provato ad andarmene prima della laurea. A quel tempo ero fidanzata con Daisuke, uno studente della mia scuola superiore, che veniva dalla provincia di Yokohama, e che aveva vissuto i miei problemi familiari come un ostacolo alla sua felicità.
Il mio trasloco era l'ultimo tentativo di far funzionare quella storia. Com'era prevedibile, la convivenza creò problemi ancora maggiori, e lui svanì nel nulla, rapido come la carta di un sigaro passata sulla fiamma dell'accendino.
La voce metallica ma dolce dell'annunciatrice, che scandiva il nome della prossima fermata, mi riportò in fretta alla realtà. "Shibuya, tsugi wa Shibuya desu" diceva lentamente. Ormai quella frase era diventata una cantilena familiare, una specie di mandala che ripetevo tra me e me tutti i giorni anche dopo essere uscita dalla stazione.
Non dovetti nemmeno sforzarmi di dirigermi verso l'uscita del vagone, perché la massa dei pendolari, che nel frattempo avevano occupato anche l'ultimo centimetro di spazio libero, mi spinse inesorabilmente al di fuori di esso.
La stazione di Shibuya era piena di vita, luminosa e imponente. Si trova all'interno di un centro commerciale, cosa affatto rara in Giappone.
Nel copiare i gesti automatici di almeno cinquanta persone davanti a me, tirai fuori la tessera ricaricabile della metro e passai le sbarre.
L'odore di cibo proveniente dai bar dell'edificio mi penetrò nelle narici, facendomi venire fame.
Camminando verso l'ingresso della linea arancione, che mi avrebbe portata a casa, mi fermai lungo il corridoio a veranda del secondo piano: le immense vetrate si aprivano sul piazzale sottostante, dove, nascosta da alcuni alberi e da una banchina adibita a zona fumatori, si intravedeva la statua di Hachiko . Ai suoi piedi frotte di giovani si davano appuntamento ogni giorno, instancabilmente.
Dalla parte opposta, quasi alla mia stessa altezza, i visi indistinti dei clienti di Starbucks sembravano dei fantasmi colorati e indaffarati. Alla mia sinistra, invece, quasi nascosto, vi era un bar ristorante di improbabile gusto occidentale, dove mi aveva dato appuntamento per la prima volta il mio ultimo fidanzato, Masayuki.
Una fitta al cuore mi lasciò quasi senza fiato, perciò decisi che era meglio dirigermi verso casa.
Presi posto in un vagone all'inizio della vettura, che era più comodo per la mia uscita ed era anche il meno affollato.
Questa volta non c'erano studenti, né pendolari, ma soltanto ragazzini e signore di mezza età con i figli.
Era quasi tempo di matsuri , perciò ogni tanto spuntava qualche yukata ben agghindato che dava un po' di colore al grigiore metallico del vagone.
Nel vedere le ragazze con la chioma pettinata ad arte, mi venne un po' di nostalgia per il sapore acidulo delle mele caramellate che mangiavo a ogni fiera sin da quando ero piccola.
Decisi che quel week-end sarei andata ad Asakusa a visitare il tempio, visto che era relativamente vicino a casa mia.
Una bambina, seguendo il mio sguardo fisso sui ciondoli di Hello Kitty che pendevano dalla borsa di una signora, mi rivolse un sorriso complice. Personalmente trovavo inadeguato che una signora di quarant'anni si vestisse ancora come una ragazzina, ma in questa città non c'erano regole e comunque non ci facevo più tanto caso.
"Quanti anni hai?" chiesi alla bambina sperando che la madre non se ne accorgesse e non mi giudicasse inopportuna.
"Io ne ho otto, e la mia sorellina ne ha sei" rispose lei, indicando una bambina addormentata sul grembo di quella che sembrava essere la nonna.
Le sorrisi, e mi misi ad ascoltare Utada Hikaru nel mio I-pod.
"Anche se vorrei incontrarti, non posso vederti, il mare ci divide" .
Canticchiavo a bassa voce, sperando che il tempo passasse più in fretta.
Scesi a Ginza insieme ad una marea di altra gente che correva verso le varie uscite, disperdendosi velocemente lungo i corridoi, sempre con il capo chino.
Presi l'uscita A13 e mi fermai a contemplare le vetrine del centro commerciale, in cui erano esposti dei costosissimi capi italiani. Salii le strette scale e continuai avanti a me, costeggiando i negozi di lusso ed evitando le persone che marciavano spedite in senso opposto.
All'altezza della boutique di Louis Vuitton, davanti a quella di Chanel, svoltai a destra, non prima di essermi soffermata sulla borsa che, ci scommettevo, sarebbe stata il mio prossimo acquisto.
All'improvviso sentii l'urgenza di bere qualcosa di caldo e cremoso, ma ero troppo pigra per salire in casa e farmi un cappuccino con la macchinetta che avevo comprato in Italia durante il mio ultimo viaggio di lavoro.
Entrai quindi nello Starbucks lungo la via, e, dopo una breve attesa, ordinai un maccha au lait , di cui andavo ghiotta.
Mi diressi al piano superiore e mi accomodai nella sala più piccola, visto che le poltrone più comode situate nel salone erano tutte occupate.
Al tavolino di fianco al mio sedeva una ragazza sui vent'anni, con i capelli lunghi raccolti sulla nuca. Stava leggendo un libro universitario, probabilmente di economia. Sembrava non fare caso alle due signore che chiacchieravano ad alta voce di fronte a lei, spettegolando del più e del meno.
I camerieri andavano e venivano frettolosi, ma non si capiva bene che cosa stessero facendo. Si intuiva però dai loro discorsi che nel pomeriggio il locale aveva ospitato un piccolo concerto di musica live, che aveva attirato parecchi clienti.
Tutti erano in agitazione perché, di norma, i concerti avevano luogo di venerdì, mentre quella settimana il programma era stato stranamente cambiato e avevano finito per decidere di spostarlo al giovedì.
La cosa doveva essere piuttosto rara, a giudicare dall'espressione infastidita sul volto del capo sala, che, evidentemente, era seccato di quella variazione dal suo tran-tran quotidiano.
Avevo notato anch'io una cosa stana: i soliti insegnati stranieri, che venivano tutti i giorni a insegnare la loro lingua ai giapponesi, quel giovedì si erano dileguati, molto in anticipo rispetto alle altre volte.
In quella zona c'erano parecchie scuole di lingua, grandi e piccole, ma la più famosa era appena fallita, lasciando senza lavoro una moltitudine di insegnanti. Di conseguenza, i bar circostanti erano diventati la base principale per impartire lezioni private a quegli studenti che avevano deciso di non interrompere i corsi. Con tutta probabilità la maggior parte di loro sarebbe stata costretta a intervallare la propria permanenza con week-end in Corea ogni tre mesi, per rinnovare il permesso di soggiorno. Non era una novità.
Notai che il bancone appoggiato alle vetrate si era appena liberato. Feci un rapido calcolo di quante forze mi rimanessero ancora prima di cadere addormentata sulla sedia, e mi diressi verso lo sgabello, trascinando i piedi doloranti. Sentivo l'impulso impellente di togliermi quei tacchi fastidiosi, ma non avevo ancora voglia di salire in casa.
Appoggiai i gomiti sul piano e mi infilai le cuffie: se c'era una cosa che mi piaceva di quel bar, era proprio la scelta dei cd messi a disposizione del pubblico. Certo, non era ampia come in quello della stazione di Shibuya, ma era comunque piacevole.
Estrassi le varie copertine e ripassai velocemente i titoli delle canzoni: c'era John Lennon, Elvis, una raccolta di jazz e una di vecchie canzoni francesi.
Sulle note di "Imagine" posi lo sguardo sul viavai di gente del marciapiede sottostante e, con animo malinconico, mi misi a riflettere sull'atavica solitudine che accomuna tutti gli esseri umani del presente e del passato.

I watched the sky over Tokyo in the advancing sunset: whether it was summer or winter the evening came unexpectedly in the late afternoon, unaware of the multitude of people who rushed en masse to all corners of the immense city, each lost in their thoughts irrespective of whoever was around. From a distance, they were all like little ants, each equal to the others.
Looking at the distant skyscrapers, I could not help but feel a sense of freedom and completeness, as if there was no other place on earth where I could fulfill my destiny.
The car was immersed perfectly in a soothing, natural silence, only occasionally interrupted by the rustling uniforms of students returning from school, or by the light snoring of commuters, which suggested the sacredness of their much-needed rest. This sleepy atmosphere and the indefinite color of the sky were mixed perfectly, giving a feeling of pure happiness. It reminded me of lazy and sincere Sundays in my childhood, when I used to go with my parents on a trip to the countryside or into the woods.
Every now and then, suddenly, those memories resurfaced as my eyes rested on an insignificant particular: the flutter of the dress of a middle-aged woman, the delicate petals of a flower that arose through the asphalt, or even the rays of sunshine filtering through the branches of a tree.
The echoes of the laughter of those past times were trapped in my head, light as the sound of distant footsteps.
Being a huge city, it takes over an hour to cross Tokyo entirely. This way I have time to read a book or simply get lost in my thoughts, as I did that day.
It’s funny how the most brilliant ideas are born in the dead times, perhaps because the mind is totally relaxed and stripped of all the constraints of everyday life.
In fact, it was in just one of those moments that I knew I wanted to change my job: suddenly, everything seemed simple and obvious. The next morning I went to my boss and I quit.
During high school I was not so impulsive; indeed, the slightest change caused me anxiety, and I preferred to adapt to an uncomfortable situation rather than risk making a leap of faith and later repenting of my choice.

And then, the shares that we have invested in stock market are earning well, aren't they?"

As a child I was terrified of his opinion, and I would do anything to please him: it was for this reason that I had entered the college.
If I could have decided for myself, I'd have gathered my dearest things and moved to Europe to pursue an artistic career: I wanted to become a painter.
But the my mother’s illness had come like a bolt from the blue, destabilizing the balance of our family, and at that point I did not feel comfortable leaving a middle-aged man - who had come directly from the solicitous care of his mother to that of his wife - entirely to himself. The smell of food coming from the coffee shops inside the building entered my nostrils, making me hungry.
Walking towards the entrance of the Orange Line, which would take me home, I stopped along the corridor on the second floor veranda: the huge windows opened onto the square below, where, hidden by some trees and a dock used as a smoking area, I could see the statue of Hachiko. At her feet crowds of youngsters would meet every day, tirelessly.
On the other side, almost at my same height, the blurred faces of customers inside Starbucks looked like ghosts, though colorful and busy. To my left, however, almost hidden, there was a bar and restaurant of unlikely Western taste, where I had arranged to meet my last boyfriend, Masayuki, for the first time.
A pang left me almost breathless, so I decided it was better to walk towards home.
I sat in a car toward the front of the train, which was more convenient for my stop and was also less crowded.
This time there were no students or commuters, but only boys and not-so-young ladies with their children.
It was almost time for matsuri, so every now and then there appeared some fashionable yukatas that gave a bit of color to the gray metal of the car.
Seeing the girls with their hair combed so perfectly, I felt a bit of longing for the sour taste of caramelized apples I ate at every fair since I was little.
I decided that that weekend I would go to Asakusa to visit the temple because it was relatively close to my house.
A girl, following my gaze to the Hello Kitty charms hanging from a lady’s bag, gave me a knowing smile.
I personally find it inappropriate that forty-year-old ladies still dressed like girls, but in this city there were no rules and I no longer noticed it anyway.
"How old are you?" I asked the girl, hoping her mother would not notice and I would not be judged inappropriate.
"I'm eight, and my sister is six," she said, pointing to a sleeping child in the arms of what appeared to be her grandmother.
I smiled, and began to listen to Utada Hikaru on my iPod.
"Even if I miss you, I cannot see you, the sea divides us."
I hummed quietly, hoping that time would pass more quickly with the music.
I went down to Ginza together with a bunch of other people rushing to the various exits, dispersing quickly along the corridors, always with their heads bowed.
I took the A13 exit and stopped to contemplate the windows of the shopping center, where the most expensive Italian garments were displayed. I climbed the narrow stairs and went straight ahead, alongside the luxury shops, avoiding the people who were marching in the opposite direction.
When I reached the Louis Vuitton boutique, in front of Chanel, I turned right, though not before dwelling on the bag that, I guessed, would be my next purchase.
Suddenly I felt the urge to drink something warm and creamy, but I was too lazy to go home and make a cappuccino with the machine I had bought in Italy during my last business trip.
Instead I went into the Starbucks along the way, and after a short wait, I ordered a mocha au lait and started to devour it greedily.
I walked upstairs and sat down in the smaller room, as the most comfortable chairs, located in the lounge, were taken.
At the table next to mine sat a girl of about twenty, her long hair tied back. She was reading a university book, probably about economics. She seemed not to notice the two ladies who were chatting loudly in front of her, gossiping about this and that.
The waiters came and went in a hurry, but it was not clear what they were doing. I gathered, however, by their speech, that in the afternoon the place had hosted a live music concert which had attracted many customers.
All were in turmoil because the concerts were normally held on Fridays, while this week the program was changed and they ended up deciding to move it to Thursday.
It must have been quite a rare occurrence, judging from the annoyed expression on the face of the head clerk, who obviously was bothered at the change from his daily humdrum.
I noticed something strange: the usual foreign teachers, who came every day to teach their language to Japanese people, had disappeared that Thursday much earlier than usual.
In that area there were many language schools, large and small, but the most famous one had gone bankrupt and a multitude of teachers without work. As a result, the surrounding cafés had become the main base for private lessons to those students who had decided not to interrupt classes. In all probability most of them would have had to break their stay with a weekend in Korea every three months to renew the residence permit. This was not news.
I noticed that the café chair near the windows had just been left vacant. I did a quick calculation of how much force would remain to me before falling asleep in the chair, and walked to the stool, dragging my aching feet. I felt an urgent impulse to take off those annoying heels, but I didn't want to go home yet.
I rested my elbows on the flat top and put on the headphones: if there was one thing I liked about this café, it was the choice of CDs made available to the public. Of course, it was not as extensive as that in the Shibuya station, but it was nice.
I pulled out the various covers and I reviewed quickly the song titles: there was John Lennon, Elvis, a collection of jazz and old French songs.
To the sounds of "Imagine" I set my gaze on the comings and goings of people on the pavement below, and, in melancholy mood, I began to reflect upon the atavistic loneliness that unites all human beings present and past.

I'm a translator from 1995, when I started to help my classmates and to translate textbooks and novels for personal use. At University I had to translate a lot because of my studies and because of the particular field of the dissertation, but I really loved it. Translating is my passion, together with writing, drawing and learning new languages.
After 5 years of University, I started to teach Japanese language in private schools and to private students. I got another 5 year degree in Law in July 2012 and I started the traineeship to become a Lawyer and a Judge in Italy. I am now a PhD student in Law at Ca' Foscari. I was admitted at the BAR in 2015.
My specialization field is Japanese Law, of which there are no books in Italian, so I have to translate very uncommon texts.
I am also a certified Court translator no. 2773.
When translating, I am very accurate, especially in the legal field. I'm very flexible and intuitive.

Above all I am a reader: on holidays, I can read a book per day.
