Source text - Spanish Chile a través de sus artistas A partir de su independencia, Chile ha sido un territorio inquieto en el plano artístico. Tomando los modos de expresión europeos (principalmente), ha ido moldeando su propia identidad estética, valiéndose en el camino de notables y originales representantes en todas las ramas de la manifestación artística. Sus obras desfilan de distintas formas por todo el país y despiertan siempre un renovado interés tanto dentro del país como en el mundo. Chile, tierra de poetas Una de las artes que más se han destacado en Chile es la poesía. Una ilustre lista de poetas han cantado en esta tierra, dándole identidad y originalidad al lenguaje heredado. Dentro de esta lista destacan los cuatro grandes del siglo XX, grupo conformado por Gabriela Mistral, Vicente Huidobro, Pablo de Rokha y Pablo Neruda. Estos poetas han redefinido, cada uno en su estilo, las formas del lenguaje poético, le han dado reconocimiento global a la cultura popular y al carácter chileno. En el año 1945, de hecho, Gabriela Mistral recibió el premio Nobel de literatura, distinción que también obtuvo Pablo Neruda, en 1971. La tradición y el quehacer poético en Chile tienen su precedente en el poema épico “La Araucana”, del español Alonso de Ercilla, que narra de manera fantástica y mágica el enfrentamiento entre los españoles y los mapuches. A partir de este poema histórico y trágico, surgen las formas propiamente hispanoamericanas de la poesía chilena, las cuales dan cuenta de buena parte de la historia, la geografía y el espíritu del país. Pero la tradición poética en Chile no se reduce a los cuatro poetas recién nombrados ni mucho menos. Han existido poetas menos influyentes a nivel mundial, pero igualmente profundos y originales que han marcado el pensamiento y la cultura artística nacional y latinoamericana, tales como Nicanor Parra, su hermana Violeta, Carlos Pezoa Véliz, Eduardo Anguita, Andrés Sabella, Enrique Lihn, Jorge Teillier, Gonzalo Rojas u Oscar Hahn. La rica variedad de estilos y temas que conforman, y en la que cohabitan los poetas chilenos, nacidos en un mismo país, pero en diversos puntos geográficos, ha permitido que se reconozca a Chile como “tierra de poetas”. Además de la poesía, la novela y el cuento también tienen en Chile destacados representantes. Es el caso, por ejemplo, de José Donoso, quien ha retratado en su escritura las relaciones familiares y sociales que han caracterizado al Chile del siglo XX, mostrando, desde la particularidad chilena, la universalidad del deseo y el anhelo, además de dar cuenta con claridad las relaciones de dominación y desigualdad que marcaron tanto a la vida rural como a la ciudad. En el ámbito de la literatura de viajes y aventuras destaca el escritor Francisco Coloane, quien publicó maravillosas novelas y cuentos cuyo escenario geográfico es el sur más austral de Chile y del continente (Tierra del Fuego, Magallanes, la Patagonia y Punta Arenas), zona de clima inhóspito en la que sin embargo habitan hombres y mujeres de esta tierra, y donde el mito, la soledad y las aventuras cobran, en este autor, un fuerte carácter literario. Entre los novelistas contemporáneos más destacados se inscriben Roberto Bolaño e Isabel Allende quienes han obtenido el reconocimiento mundial y que, pese a vivir fuera del país, han mantenido su vínculo literario con él. Música En cuanto a la música, Chile tiene un tradición corta aunque rica y variada. En los años sesenta, la música popular tuvo su apogeo en la denominada “nueva canción chilena”, que reinterpretaba las formas musicales del folkclore propias del campo y le añadía una carga política de protesta social a sus letras. Entre sus representantes destacan los grupos Quilapayún e Inti illimani, y los cantautores Violeta Parra y Victor Jara. En la misma década, el rock norteamericano tuvo su adaptación particular en Chile, primero mediante la llamada “nueva ola”, en la que destacan Buddy Richards y Cecilia, y luego en la psicodelia representada por Los Jaivas, Los Blops y Aguaturbia, entre otros. En el ámbito de la música clásica sobresale el reconocido pianista Claudio Arrau, heredero de una importante tradición que lo vincula directamente con Franz Liszt, y cuyas interpretaciones lo han puesto dentro de los mejores músicos clásicos del siglo XX. Nacido en la ciudad de Chillán en el año 1903, Claudio Arrau adquirió fama mundial luego de que a temprana edad fuera descubierto como niño prodigio del piano (a los siete años daba una concierto en el palacio de gobierno en Santiago). Una vez en Alemania, ganó rápidamente el premio Ibach a la excelencia artística, distinción a la que le seguirían múltiples reconocimientos. Tanto en las décadas de los ochentas y noventas, como también en esta que recién termina, la música preponderante ha sido el rock and pop, que ha tenido grupos de gran convocatoria y éxito tales como el trío Los Prisioneros, el cuarteto Los tres o Los Bunkers. Pintura y artes visuales La tradición pictórica y las artes visuales en Chile cuentan, también, con notables representantes y corrientes estilísticas. Es a partir del siglo XIX que la pintura cobra un impulso más general y propio luego del paso por el país de destacados maestros en este arte, quienes impartieron clases y realizaron parte de su obra inspirados en el país. Entre estos maestros destaca el francés Raymond Monvoisin, el alemán Johann Rugendas, el italiano Alejandro Cicarelli, el inglés Thomas Somerscales y el norteamericano James Whistler. A partir de este impulso, que tuvo apoyo a nivel gubernamental, surgieron los primero pintores chilenos, entre los que destacaron Onofre Jarpa y Ramón Subercaseaux. La historia de la pintura chilena en el siglo XX es bastante rica y variada, y ha mostrado su impronta crítica y estilística en las galerías de todo el mundo. Entre los autores precursores, destacan aquellos que conforman la generación de Grandes Maestros de la pintura chilena, integrada por Juan Francisco González, Pedro Lira, Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma y Alberto Valenzuela Llanos. Estos maestros dieron claras muestras de independencia y libertad técnica y temática respecto de Europa. El gesto creativo de estos autores dio paso a las vanguardias y a una notable lista de artistas plásticos y visuales que aun gozan de vitalidad y presencia, tales como Camilo Mori, Roberto Matta, Francisco Brugnoli, Gonzalo Díaz, Gonzalo Cienfuegos o Matilde Pérez. Dentro de los más recientes destacan Samy Benmayor, Carlos Maturana (Bororo), Virginia Errázuriz, Juan Downey y Alfredo Jaar.	Translation - English Chile Through its Artists Since its independence, Chile has had an artistic restlessness. Mainly influenced by European artistic tradition, it has managed to create its own aesthetic identity, validating itself with the life work of important and original artists from each artistic discipline. Their work is displayed throughout the country. Without fail it inspires interest from nationals and foreigners. Chile, Land of Poets One of the arts in which Chileans have most excelled is poetry. Many illustrious poets have given voice to this land. They have lent identity and originality to an inherited language. Amongst them are the four greats of the 20th Century: Gabriela Mistral, Vicente Huidobro, Pablo de Rokha and Pablo Neruda. These poets have refined, each in their own way, the forms of the poetic language and have brought international recognition to Chilean culture and character. In 1945, in fact, Gabriela Mistral received the Nobel Prize for literature, a distinction which Pablo Neruda also obtained in 1971. Poetry and its tradition in Chile have their beginnings in the epic poem “La Araucana" by Alonso de Ercilla, a Spaniard. This epic poem tells about the confrontation between the Spanish and the Mapuches in a fantastical and magical way. The Hispano-American forms of Chilean poetry, which express the history, geography and spirit of the country, stem from this historic and tragic poem. But Chile's entire poetic tradition cannot be reduced to the four poets named above. Many poets who were less internationally recognized were equally as profound and original and left their mark on Chilean and Latin American artistic thought and culture: Nicanor Parra, his sister Violeta; Carlos Pezoa Véliz, Eduardo Anguita, Andrés Sabella, Enrique Lihn, Jorge Teillier, Gonzalo Rojas and Oscar Hahn, to name a few. The rich variety of styles and subjects taken up by Chilean poets, all born in the same country, but in different geographic locations, has allowed Chile to become known as a "country of poets". In addition to poets, Chile also boasts some well-known authors of novels and short stories. This is the case with Jose Donoso, for example, who has shown in his writing the familial and social relationships that characterize Chile in the 20th century. He demonstrates, using specifically Chilean stories, the universality of longing and desire, and relationships in which domination and inequality are the norm, relationships that exist as commonly in rural locations as they do in cities. Francisco Coloane is known for his travel and adventure writing. He has published marvelous novels and stories that take place in the farthest southern extremes of Chile and the continent (Tierra del Fuego, Magallanes, Patagonia and Punta Arenas). According to this author, these inhospitable lands, braved by men and women alike, give rise to the kind of myth, solitude and adventure that gives life to strong literary characters. Amongst the most outstanding contemporary writers are internationally recognized Robert Bolaño and Isabel Allende. Although they live outside of the country, they have maintained their literary connection with Chile. Music When it comes to music, Chile’s history is short, but rich and varied. In the seventies, pop music was at its peak with the so-called “new Chilean song”, which mixed folkloric forms from the countryside with political lyrics of social protest. Groups arose such as Quilapayun and Inti illimani, and singer songwriters such as Violeta Parra and Victor Jara. During the same decade, North American rock had a special affect on Chile, first came the “new wave” in which Buddy Richards and Cecilia reigned and then psychedelic rock which was represented by Los Jaivas, Los Blops, Aguaturbia and others. In the area of classical music, renowned pianist Claudio Arrau inherited an important tradition which elevated him to the company of greats such as Franz Liszt. Arrau's artistic interpretations allowed him to join the ranks of the best classical musicians of the twentieth century. Born in Chillan in 1903, Claudio Arrau acquired world fame when he was discovered to be a child prodigy on the piano (at the age of seven he performed a concert at the government palace in Santiago). Soon after moving to Germany, he won the Ibach, an award for artistic excellence and a distinction which won him wide-spread recognition. In the 80s, 90s, and this last decade, rock and pop have dominated the scene with popular and successful groups like the trio Los Prisioneros, the quartet Los Tres and Los Bunkers. Painting and Visual Arts Chile has also contributed important artists and styles to the visual arts. In the 19th century, Chile’s painting world took on a life of its own after several masters visited the country, gave classes and created works of art inspired by their stay. These artists included Raymond Monvoisin (from France), Johann Rugendas (from Germany), Alejandro Ciarelli (from Italy), Thomas Somerscales (from England) and James Whistler (from the United States). After this initiative, which received government funding, the first Chilean painters emerged, Onofre Jarpa and Ramon Subercaseaux standing out amongst them. The history of Chilean painting in the twentieth century is interesting and diverse, and left a critical and stylistic impression on galleries throughout the world. Amongst the artists those who make up the generation of Chilean Great Masters are Juan Francisco González, Pedro Lira, Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma and Alberto Valenzuela Llanos. These masters made clear their independence from Europe by way of the technical and thematic freedoms they took. The creative work of these artists gave way to the avante garde of the next generation, a list of important visual artists who are still alive and appreciated: Camilo Mori, Roberto Matta, Francisco Brugnoli, Gonzalo Díaz, Gonzalo Cienfuegos and Matilde Pérez; and more recently, Samy Benmayor, Carlos Maturana (Bororo), Virginia Errázuriz, Juan Downey and Alfredo Jaar.
