Source text - English “So where are we going this time” I asked Hussein just as the Toyota was driving away from the Hotel and the laughter had died down into respectful silence with the very mentioning of the word “Allah”. I had not been told in advance which catch stations I would visit this time, and all I knew was that a trip to the Caspian Sea would be organized. “We will travel onto the Firoozkoo road through the Eastern part of the Mazandaran province along the Caspian Sea and from there we will continue into the province of Golestan, where we will stop in the City of Golan”. “For How long?” I asked. “Not too long”. Hussein turned around “400 kilometres, maybe eight hours!” My excitement was fading. I knew only too well that driving in Iran could be considered as an adventure filled with dangerous situations. At least that was my personal experience. If ever I should mention this to an Iranian they would laugh saying that I would get used to it.
I looked around for the rear seatbelts but could not find any. Even the front seats did not have any. I was getting nervous. Hussein looked around at me, “Are you OK?” he asked, as if he knew what I was thinking. “Fine” I lied, “however could you ask the driver to be careful, after all we are not really in a hurry”. “Don’t worry” Hussein attempted to sound convincing, “He is a very good driver, professional actually”, and continuing as he believed I needed better convincing “He used to drive tanks in the war”. “What happened” I asked curiously – if he was driving for us and not still in the war or even dead, surely something unusual must have occurred. I was about to apologise for my insensitive tone when Hussein answered with inexpressive nonchalance, as if I had asked the time of the day, “poor eyesight!” “Excuse me?” I nearly choked. “He lost one eye in battle when he was hit by an Iraqi bullet”. “He what??” –
I pretended I had not well understood his words. “Actually he was very lucky”, Hussein continued in the same calm voice. “Yashar (that was our driver’s name) was fighting in the trenches when he was hit by a ricochet bullet that had just killed the soldier next to him. It continued on through Yashar’s left eye and into his brain.” He paused for a second. “ They operated on him and gave him a glass eye, but they never found the bullet”. I was stunned. “How can that be, you mean he still has a bullet in his brain?” I asked. “We just don’t have the right equipment everywhere yet” Hussain answered.
Yashar had gathered that we were talking about him and he looked enquiringly at Hussein, who translated our conversation to him. “Ahh” Yashar started to laugh, and he turned around to look at me while continuing to drive at 80 kilometres an hour on the narrow mountain road. Asking me in Iranian if I was interested in seeing his glass eye, he was already about to remove it to show me.
“Please” I shouted, “keep your eyes on the road, I can see it later”. I must have sounded desperate, as Yashar immediately turned around, just in time to avoid a collision. “Keep your eyes on the road” - Hussein repeated my outcry as if he was thinking loud and translated it to Yashar. They both laughed out loudly and heartily.
Presently we slowed down to 35 kilometres an hour. One car that was packed to its roof with cartons, luggage and wooden crates had gathered a following convoy of fifteen or so cars filled with angry Iranians finding the pace much too slow. Hussein complained to Yashar who without hesitation crossed over to the opposite incoming lane and sped up. The old Toyota was accelerating with great difficulty when suddenly I saw a military convoy approaching right towards us. A logical reaction in this situation would be to slow down and turn back into our correct lane. Yashar, our one eyed ex tank driver did not share in this logic. Instead he stepped or rather kicked frantically on the accelerator, hand on the horn, and zoomed full speed ahead! In terror I grabbed both front seats with my front hands and watched as the large green-brown camouflaged military truck approached without the slightest sign of slowing down. Unavoidably we would slam into the front of the truck in a few seconds and a vivid vision appeared to me of our struggling Toyota, its engine roaring violently as it pulled for its ultimate source of power, exploding with all of us inside fragmenting into millions of unrecognisable pieces as we impacted with this enormous military machine that was so colossal that it would hardly feel the force of the collision.
I threw myself to the back of my seat, closed my eyes, and curled up in a foetus position waiting for the mighty impact when suddenly Yasher pulled the steering wheel forcefully to the right and yanked the screeching Toyota in front of the heavily jam-packed car at the top of the convoy while the camouflaged monster flew by at full speed. Sweating profusely, with a mixture of relief and disbelief I looked up and saw the two men in the front seats continuing as though nothing had happened. Hussein turned around and looked at me with an expression of surprise. I had fear written all over me and sweat was pouring from my face. “Are you OK?” wondering what might have gone into me. “Are you guys crazy?” I shouted, “what kind of dare game was this?” “Dare game?” Hussein was puzzled. “We don’t play any games Mr Peter, we just needed to get in front of the convoy” he continued with his usual smile while placing a friendly hand on the shoulder of Yashar, “I told you, he is a professional driver”. “BUT”, I was furious, “He nearly had us all killed”. “Mr Peter”, Hussein interrupted me with a compassionate voice, “You are never nearly killed, you are either killed or wounded but in this particular case we are neither nor. And moreover there was lots of space between the cars. I don’t know why you are so worried”. I was shaking with anger. “Did you not see how close we were to hitting that truck” I pointed my finger at Yashar “And just how good is his one-eye sight?” Still surprised about my over-reaction, Hussein calmly asked Yashar how good his sight was in his remaining eye. After a little conversation between the two men in Iranian, Hussein turned around towards me and said, extremely unaffected “He thinks it is probably 70 percent”. “70 percent” I was shaking my head. “Thanks be to God for our lucky star” I mumbled. “Ohh Yes” replied Hussein “Allah-u Akba”. “Allah-u Akba” repeated Yashar, looking at me through the rear mirror with a large smile revealing his only three teeth.
I felt quite embarrassed. These two men had witnessed the horrors of war - a front seat view and participation with man’s worst endeavours. They had experienced a war that was brought on solely because a neighbour had decided he wanted an extra chunk of their county for himself and saw their country as momentarily weak. They had been drafted into the battlefields with little or no training and seen their loved ones, friends and fellow soldiers dismembered, wounded and killed in front of them. I apologised for my reaction earlier on and assured Yashar that he was an excellent driver, better than most. I felt privileged that Shilat had assigned him to be our driver for the week. If only he would drive a little bit slower I would be forever grateful. Hussein translated, Yashar looked at me in the rear mirror with a huge smile and said in English “Yes my friend, Allah-u Akba”. I replied “Allah-u Akba indeed”.
Translation - French — Alors, où allons-nous cette fois ? demandais-je à Hussein, alors que la Toyota quittait à peine l'hôtel.
Les rires s'étaient estompés avec l'évoquation du mot «Allah», remplacés par un silence teinté de respect. Cette fois, on ne m'avait pas informé à l'avance de quels postes de pêche j'allais visiter. Tout ce que je savais c'est qu'un crochet vers la Mer Caspienne avait été prévu.
— Nous allons voyager sur la route Firoozkoo à travers la partie est de la province de Mazandarn, le long de la Mer Caspienne et, à partir de là, nous continuerons vers la Province de Golestan où nous nous ferons halte dans la ville de Golan.
— Combien de temps durera le voyage ? demandais-je.
— Pas trop longtemps, répondit Hussein en se retournant. 400 kilomètres. Peut-être 8 heures.
Mon excitation s'évanouissait. Je ne savais que trop bien que conduire en Iran pouvait se révéler être une aventure riche en événements dangereux. Tout du moins, telle était mon expérience personnelle. Je n'en avais jamais fait état devant un Iranien, ils auraient ri en disant que j'allais m'y habituer.
A l'arrière, je cherchais les ceintures de sécurité mais ne pouvais en trouver aucune. Même les sièges de devant n'en avaient pas. Je devins nerveux. Hussein se tourna vers moi :
— Ca va ? me demanda-t-il, comme s'il pouvait lire dans mes pensées.
— Bien, mentais-je. Néanmoins, peux-tu demander au chauffeur d'être prudent ? Après tout, nous ne sommes pas vraiment pressés.
— Ne t’inquiète pas, dit Hussein d'un ton qui se voulait rassurant. C'est un très bon chauffeur. En fait, c'est un professionnel. Et continuant, comme s'il pensait qu'il avait besoin d'être plus convaincant:
— Il manoeuvrait des tanks pendant la guerre.
— Qu'est-il arrivé ? demandais-je avec curiosité. Puisqu'il était notre chauffeur en ce moment, et donc ne se trouvait pas sur le champ de bataille, ou mort, quelque chose d'inhabituel avait certainement dû avoir lieu.
J'étais sur le point de m'excuser pour mon manque de tact, lorsqu' Hussein lâcha, d'un air détaché, exactement comme si je m'étais enquis de l'heure qu'il est:
— Il voit mal !
— Pardon ? dis-je en suffocant.
— Il a perdu un oeil dans la bataille lorsqu'il a été atteint par une balle iraquienne.
— Il quoi ?
Je fis mine de ne pas avoir bien compris.
— En fin de compte, il a été très chanceux, poursuivit Hussein de la même voix calme.
— Yashar – c'était le nom de notre chauffeur – se trouvait dans les tranchées quand une balle l'a atteint par ricochet. Elle venait juste de tuer le soldat à côté de lui. Elle a poursuivi son chemin en transperçant son oeil gauche et son cerveau. Il s'interrompit un instant. Ils l'ont opéré et lui ont donné un oeil de verre, mais ils n'ont jamais pu trouver la balle.
J'étais sans voix.
— Comment est-ce possible ? Tu veux dire qu'il a toujours une balle dans le cerveau? demandais-je.
— C'est juste que nous ne disposons pas du matériel adéquat partout en ce moment, répondit Hussein.
Yashar avait compris que nous parlions de lui et il regardait Hussein d'un air interrogateur. Celui-ci lui traduisit notre conversation.
— Ah ! Yashar commença à rire.
Puis il se retourna pour me contempler tout en continuant à rouler à 80 kilomètres à l'heure sur la route de montagne escarpée. Il me demanda en Iranien si j'avais envie de voir son oeil de verre. Il fit mine de l'enlever pour me le montrer.
— Je t'en prie, hurlais-je. Garde tes yeux sur la route, je peux le voir plus tard !
Ma voix avait dû trahir ma détresse, car Yashar fit volte-face sur le champ, suffisamment tôt pour éviter une collision.
— Garde tes yeux sur la route ! Hussein répéta mon interjection comme s'il voulait y réfléchir tout haut et traduisit à Yashar. Ils éclatèrent tous les deux d'un rire sonore et chaleureux.
Nous avions alors réduit notre vitesse à environ 35 kilomètres à l'heure. Une voiture chargée jusqu'au toit de cartons, de valises et de caisses en bois était à l'origine d'un bouchon d'une quinzaine de voitures agglutinées derrière elle, chacune remplie d'iraniens contrariés par la vitesse trop lente du convoi. Hussein s'en plaint à Yashar, qui, sans l'ombre d'hésitation, se déporta sur la voie en contre-sens et accéléra. La vieille Toyota avait beaucoup de mal à prendre de la vitesse et, soudain, je vis un convoi militaire arriver pile en face de nous. Une réaction logique à cette situation aurait été de réduire la vitesse et de se rabattre vers notre voie d'origine. Yashar, notre ex-chauffeur de char borgne, ne partageait pas cette logique. Au contraire, il appuya – ou plutôt défonça frénétiquement – l'accélérateur, sa main sur le klaxon, et fonça tout droit. Plein gaz ! Terrorisé, j'agrippais les deux sièges avant, et fixais l'énorme camion militaire au camouflage vert et marron s'approcher de nous, ne trahissant aucun signe d'un quelconque ralentissement. Nous allions inévitablement le percuter frontalement dans les prochaines secondes. Une vision s'imposa à moi: celle d'une Toyota pétardante, au moteur rugissant violemment, comme en quête de son ultime force motrice, explosant avec nous tous à l'intérieur, fragmentés en millions de particules méconnaissables après être rentré en collision avec cet imposant véhicule militaire, qui, lui, était tellement colossal qu'il avait à peine ressenti l'onde de choc.
Je me recroquevillais au fond de mon siège en position foetale, fermais les yeux, dans l'attente de l'énorme impact. Alors, soudain, Yashar braqua le volant vigoureusement vers la droite et rabatta d'un coup sec la Toyota crissante devant la voiture lourdement chargée en tête du convoi, pendant que le monstre en habit de camouflage traça sa route, à pleine vitesse. En sueur, je levais mes yeux emplis d'un mélange de soulagement et d'incrédulité et vis les deux hommes assis devant continuer de parler, comme si rien n'était arrivé. Hussein se retourna et me regarda avec un air de surprise. La peur était inscrite sur mon visage et mon front perlait à grosses gouttes.
— Ca va ? me demanda-t-il, curieux de savoir ce qui pouvait bien m'avoir mis dans cet état.
— Vous êtes malades les gars ? hurlais-je. C'est quoi ça ? Vous jouez à la roulette ?
— A la roulette ?
Hussein était confus.
— Nous ne jouons à aucun jeu, Mr Peter, nous avions juste besoin de dépasser le convoi, enchaîna-t-il avac son sourire habituel.
Puis, posant une main amicale sur l'épaule de Yashar:
— Je vous l'ai dit, c'est un chauffeur professionnel.
— MAIS, dis-je, furibond, il a failli nous tuer !
— Mr Peter, interjeta Hussein, la voix remplie de compassion, vous n'êtes jamais presque tué ! Vous êtes soit tué, soit blessé, mais dans ce cas précis nous ne sommes ni l'un ni l'autre. Et, en plus, il y avait énormément d'espace entre les voitures. Je ne vois pas pourquoi vous êtes si choqué.
J'étais fou de rage.
— Vous n'avez pas vu que nous étions à deux doigts de heurter ce camion ?
Je montrais Yashar du doigt.
— Et est-ce que son oeil restant voit normallement ?
Toujours abasourdi de ma réaction exagérée, Hussein demanda calmement à Yashar s'il voyait bien avec son oeil restant. Après avoir échangé quelques mots entre eux en Iranien, Hussein se tourna vers moi et dit, sans avoir l'air aucunement concerné :
— Il pense que sa vision avoisinne les 70%.
— 70 % ?!
Je secouais la tête.
— Dieu préserve notre bonne étoile, marmonnais-je.
— Oh oui, répondit Hussein, Allah-uh Akbar !
— Allah-u Akba ! répéta Yashar, me jetant un coup d'oeil depuis le rétroviseur, son immense sourire dévoilant ses trois uniques dents.
Je me sentais morveux. Ces deux hommes avaient vécu les atrocités de la guerre – une place au premier rang et un ticket pour la pire épreuve de force qu'il soit donné à un homme de vivre. Ils avaient vécu une guerre causée uniquement par la volonté d'un voisin de confisquer un petit bout de leur pays et dont il avait perçu la faiblesse momentanée. Envoyés vers les champs de bataille avec peu ou pas d'entraînement, ils avaient vu les personnes aimées, les amis et camarades soldats blessés, démembrés et tués devant eux.
Je m'excusais pour ma réaction d'un peu plus tôt et assura Yashar qu'il était un excellent chauffeur, bien meilleur que bien d'autres. Le fait que Shilat nous l'avait assigné pour la semaine était un privilège. Si seulement il pouvait ralentir un petit peu, je lui en serrais reconnaissant pour le reste de ma vie. Hussein traduisit. Yashar me regarda dans le rétroviseur avec un immense sourire et dit en anglais:
— Oui mon ami, Allah-uh Akbar!
— Allah-uh Akbar ! Tu ne crois pas si bien dire ! répondis-je.

We do not feast on Caviar to indulge our hunger; we consume it to be transported into another dimension, a world of the finer traditions and an experience of intense moments. Caviar is a passionate love affair with life, culture and prominence. But, so often where there is beauty there is also darkness. What was once controlled by the mighty and powerful is now only too often in the hands of the reckless and voracious. The word “Caviar” is often used too easily, as a description, going unchallenged by proper legal defence. Its true heritage and origins are not protected by the courts, by Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée rulings or by any rigorous system as are other prestigious products like champagne, wine or even fine cigars. In many cases not just cheap fish eggs but jeans, face-creams and watches, just to mention a few, try to elevate their status in their marketing world by branding themselves “Caviar”.
While the branding of “Caviar” flourishes all over the world, the product itself is currently undergoing one of its most severe ever battles for survival.
Translation - French Ce serait une erreur de considérer le Caviar comme de la simple nourriture. On ne déguste pas le Caviar pour satisfaire notre faim, on le consomme pour se projeter dans une nouvelle dimension, faite d'un univers de traditions subtiles et de la découverte d'instants d'une intensité inégalable. Le Caviar est une histoire d'amour folle avec la vie, la culture et le prestige. Mais, comme souvent, beauté rime avec opacité. Ce qui jadis était contrôlé par les riches et puissants est maintenant trop fréquemment aux mains de gens sans scrupules et avides.
