I have been freelancing as a translator for four years, with projects ranging from website script QA to larger translation projects dealing with manuals and voice prompts for automated systems.
Before moving to the United States I worked primarily as a university instructor at the University of Joensuu (now University of Eastern Finland). I taught Finnish graduate and post-graduate students English for Special Purposes, which entailed creating academic course content varying from oral presentation skills to composing a research paper in the field the students were majoring in. The content of my language classes focused heavily on so-called hard sciences.
Besides teaching English, I also taught Finnish as a Second/Foreign Language at the university for exchange students and at the local community college for immigrants.
Both of these teaching experiences have equipped me with extensive knowledge of grammar as well as spoken and written conventions in both languages. After moving to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, I have continued teaching Finnish as a Foreign Language and keeping up with new developments in Finnish language and culture, while cultivating my (predominantly American) English skills.
With the extensive knowledge of both of my languages, as well as knowledge of everyday cultural contexts for the both of them, my translations are guaranteed to be up-to-date in style and idiomatic.
