Hi everyone!

It’s my pleasure to announce that a new ProZ.com translation contest is starting today, with a source text in English.

The timeline for this contest is:

  • June 1st - July 5th: Submissions
  • July 6th - August 2nd: Hybrid (pairs with 3 to 7 entries move straight to finals, while pairs with more than 7 entries go to a qualification phase)
  • August 3rd - August 24th: Finals
  • August 27th: Announcement of winners

Take a break, test your skills and have fun: see the contest and submit your entry here.

Happy translating,

Tatiana

Who can participate?
Entry submission is limited to ProZ.com members in pairs in which the member population is large enough to support competition (the complete list is available in the contest page). In pairs other than these, any registered user can submit an entry. Rating and voting on entries submitted by others is open to all registered users.

How about a source text in X language?
A translation contest with a Spanish source text is in the works, to be announced soon. ProZ.com translation contests depend on the collaboration of participants in many aspects--voting, commenting, submitting entries, and also in finding suitable source texts in various languages (especially languages in which no member of the site team is native). You can help ensure source texts in a variety of languages for future contests by proposing a text in your native language here.

What an interesting title after the deafening silence that followed the last translation contest and the fact that the voting on that contest is still on in some pairs...

Best regards,

Teresa Borges

Hi Teresa,

I am currently working on helping to close pairs that were left open in the last contest while releasing new contests.

Let's keep the topic of this thread to the contest it is announcing, though. Thanks!

Tatiana

Hang on... Jun 5, 2018

Is this like the previous contests, in which entrants and completely random people were allowed to vote on other people's entries? If so, no thanks!

I might consider participating if the entries were judged by an impartial panel of experts.

None of the ProZ.com contests were ever judged by an impartial panel of experts. It has always been judged by popular vote. The reason is simple: an impartial panel of experts would be too expensive.

But on this page, it says that in most language combinations, both members and non-members can submit entries. So, which is it?

The 2014 contest "Celebrations" is still "open" in my language combination due to some mystery quotas that we didn't know about and still haven't met. What are the quotas/requirements for this contest, i.e. what must happen to a language pair for it to move to the final round and have a winner announced?

You are right, membership is required only for the most populated language pairs. I have updated my post to reflect this. Thanks for pointing it out!

You can find the answer to that question in this post. The same logic applies both to the Qualification and the Finals phase.

Once more, please let's keep this thread on topic. Discussions on previous contests should be carried out in the appropriate threads.

Tatiana

So... 3x as many voters are required Jun 6, 2018

Thanks for the clarification -- so, if there are not at least three times as many voters as participants in each phase, that partiular language combination will not move to the next phase. If that happens, can one or more of the participants withdraw their entries during any of the phases, in order to bring the ratio beyond the required threshold?

A participant may withdraw their entry at any time. A withdrawn entry would not necessarily affect the ratio in such a way as to make clear which entries should move to finals, or which entry should win, however.

Tatiana

Voters / Vote Ratio Aug 7, 2018

Is it possible to see/know what's the voter/vote ratio for all entries?
I am interested particularly to know how many people rated the first 3 entries remaining in the English-German pair and how they rated the writing and the translation quality separetely.
Why this question: for fairness reasons. It is not the same if 20 or if 5 people vote an entry.

Hi Zea_Mays,

All that information will become visible after the contest is finished (number of raters per entry, overall averages and averages for quality of writing and for accuracy of translation). For an example, see this contest.

Regards,

Tatiana
