1/2 hour - waste time on the Internet
1/2 day - go mountain biking
2 days - panic

Relax Dec 11, 2014

I do the other things as well, but mainly use it as an opportunity to relax. I work seven days per week when things are busy, after all.

I usually have some sort of work going on at all times. When I have a bit of spare time, I have to deal with admin, billing etc, although I consider that part of my job too.

Otherwise, there is always something to do - housework, shopping, tending to animals, gathering, shopping and stacking firewood... the list is endless.

I prepare glossaries using the translations already done or proofreaded by my, as well as "clean" and improve my translation memories. Of course, there is always some administrative work and marketing

I start by relaxing (reading, watching TV, going out for a meal, shopping) and doing some domestic chores (ironing, cooking…) but if I go for a few whole days without job offers coming in then I begin to panic… and fortunately the cycle starts again!

I don't have much time without projects Dec 11, 2014

I wish I had more time in between. I've discovered in my dotage that I love to write. I grab every spare minute to work on my writing projects: revising my book, "Finding My Invincible Summer"; reviewing its translation into Portuguese; blogging; and working on two new books.

I recently had a welcome one-week break after finishing a 48,000-word translation. Then yesterday and today a huge pile of work came in that throws a wet blanket on the holidays.

I have a project ongoing now, but the deadline is fairly gentle so I've given myself a day off today after a fairly intense past week. The weather's not very amenable to going outside, but plans for the day include having a lie-in (which in the end didn't happen), catching up with e-mails, going to the gym during the daytime while it's empty, and maybe watching a film later on.

If I have a day with no projects at all I always feel too 'on call' to do that much in case I suddenly ge

If I have a day with no projects at all I always feel too 'on call' to do that much in case I suddenly get something coming in, but today I feel I can completely mentally switch off.

I have one continuous project with indefinite ending, and another one that will/can keep me busy until the end of January.

When there is room to breathe I do administrative work and, of course, relax.

Luckily, I'm not at full capacity all the time and I can dedicate, usually, half of my time to what's more important to me. Translation can be interesting if you get riveting texts, but for the most of us, it's just a job.

When I hear people being 'passionate' about translation as a job (not as a craft, by that I mean mainly literary translation or the theory and history of it all), my brow always furls.
