(1) Celebrating International Translation Day with Powwows in 73 Cities
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In celebration of "International Translation Day", over 1,000 ProZ.com members and guests have signed up to meet in a globally distributed event featuring 73 “powwows” in over 30 countries. The face-to-face meetings will be held over the next few days, culminating in International Translation Day on September 30.
Plans have been made for a “chain” of contact to be made, with reports and greetings to be exchanged from powwow to powwow by voice and video chat.
Even if you have never been to a powwow, if you are a translators or interpreter, a company owner, or work in the industry in some way, please join the celebration! (The events are free, just pay for your meal in most cases.)
To find one in your area, go to:
http://www.proz.com/powwows
(Find the nearest one on the world map!)
A news release on the event is posted here:
http://connect.proz.com/employers/news?press_id=38
Note: Already, members in various places have had the privilege of participating virtually in the Bangkok powwow, presented by ProZians along with the Royal Institute of Thailand and the Summer Institute of Languages. Congratulations to organizer Maneerat Sawasdiwat Na Ayutthaya! http://www.proz.com/profile/727046
With just a few weeks to go, it is still possible to register for the Montreal conference. The two-day event, to be held on Saturday and Sunday--October 13 and 14--at the AUBERGE ROYAL VERSAILLES on rue Sherbrooke Est, features sessions by the following industry leaders:
* Yves Champollion - Creator of Wordfast
* Andrew Draheim - Formerly with World Bank and Merrill Brink International
* Henry Dotterer - Founder of ProZ.com
There are many more sessions, plus a networking dinner, and social events and trainings the days before and after the sessions (October 12 and 15).
Registration costs just $100 (USD or CAD; discounted from $250) for both days, of $150 with the networking dinner included. Single day passes are also available for $50, if you choose to attend just one day of sessions.
The reduced registration fee is made possible in part by platinum sponsors for the event, SDL Trados and Wordfast. Lexi-tech International is co-organizer.
(5) ProZ.com: Home of the fastest-growing network of translation companies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In March of this year, after years of treating all ProZ.com users the same, a membership option was announced specifically for translation companies. The option has been popular, and already, nearly 200 companies have joined. This makes ProZ.com home of the largest web-based network of translation companies. And the program has just begun!

Do you operate a translation company? Over the remainder of the year, and in 2008, based on the direction of our corporate members, the ProZ.com staff will be releasing a host of "tools and opportunities" (our mission!) for you to run your business more efficiently, and for you to collaborate more effectively with other translation companies around the world.

Already, ProZ.com corporate membership includes access to the Connect platform. Use the Connect directory and job posting form and you'll never want to go back! It also features inclusion in the ProZ.com directory of translation companies. Much more is planned.

In the coming months, we will be extending invitations to notable translation companies, asking you to join our growing network of top companies. Joining the network in this, the first year of the program, is the way to ensure not only a discounted membership fee, but also all of the benefits of access to the fastest growing network of translation companies in the world, and the commitment and mission of the ProZ.com staff.

(6) Member Fabio Descalzi receives a special prize for Originality in Export of Services
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a ceremony attended by national authorities at the Montevideo Stock Exchange, Fabio Descalzi Sgarbi http://www.proz.com/profile/74269 received a special prize for Originality in Export of Services from the National Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay.
The award was given in recognition of Fabio's model of translation in the international market as an export service, where professionals can fill a very specific niche in the global market by making use of the networking facilities provided by the Internet.
An architect-turned-translator from Montevideo, Fabio is a passionate builder of bridges among different cultures and languages. He serves the ProZian community as moderator and is the organizer of powwow http://www.proz.com/powwow/1465 , part of the Translators' Day powwow initiative.
(7) Answering KudoZ: a winning strategy for language professionals
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Have you looked at the freelancer directory in your language pairs recently? If you were not too happy with your position in the directory, there are many strategies for moving up in the list of language professionals. One of the surest ways to better your directory position is by answering KudoZ questions. Every PRO KudoZ point you earn in your language pair and field of expertise counts, not just towards making yourself more visible to potential clients. Frequent KudoZ answerers are helping to market themselves as active, knowledgeable and helpful in the language pairs and specializations in which they work.

If you have your share of KudoZ points already, but haven't answered in a while, don't just rest on your laurels. Continued participation is key to success in staying visible. Get out there and participate, share your knowledge to help others, and most of all have fun.

If you have never participated in KudoZ, a good place to start is here: http://www.proz.com/index.php3?sp=about/kudoz&show_mode=intro

ProZian students are kindly invited to complete these fields in their profiles, as a Students search feature will be released soon based on this new information. For more details please visit http://www.proz.com/post/680020#680020

Another piece of good news was the designation of Anne Diamantidis http://www.proz.com/profile/630536 as the first student member to become ProZ.com moderator, to oversee the Student Membership Forum.

(9) In memoriam: Justin Chlebus, 1985-2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have some very sad news to report in this newsletter. Our friend and colleague, staff member Justin Chlebus, died in a car accident at the start of the month. He had just celebrated his 22nd birthday.
In his two and a half years at ProZ.com, Justin made contributions to all major areas of ProZ.com. In addition to taking on responsibility for the stability and response time of our computer systems, Justin worked to upgrade the jobs systems, Blue Board, KudoZ, support system, and many other areas of the site. His search engine optimization work resulted in hundreds of thousands of new visitors to the site, thousands of whom have become clients of ProZ.com members, and many who have become ProZ.com members (many of you reading this will have found the site thanks to Justin's work). Justin also was the main developer assigned to supporting members for most of 2007; many of you will have been assisted by him at some point.
When news of Justin's passing was posted on the site, it was met with an outpouring of feeling from ProZians in over 75 countries. The 34 pages of forum postings, which filled a book given to members of his family, represented only a small reflection of what Justin did for our community.
For those of us who had the pleasure and good fortune of working beside this good and special young man, there is no way to fill the gap left by his loss. In memory of Justin, we have created the following memorial section: http://www.proz.com/justin He will live on both in our hearts and in the contributions he made to the site and community.
