Balai fait de morceaux de chiffons fixés à un manche, destiné à étendre le goudron sur les carènes ou à laver un plancher. (Dict. XIXe et XXe s., sauf Ac. et DG). Région. (Canada). Synon. de serpillière. Elle se mit à laver le plancher, toute à la joie de travailler sans témoin. Personne ne lui reprocherait, du regard, d'oublier le savon dans l'eau. Personne ne la verrait se reposer, après chaque travée. Alors elle lava d'affilée, sans souffler, le plancher, prenant soin, chaque fois qu'elle savonnait le guipon, de déposer le pain de savon au sec à côté du seau (GUÈVREMONT, Survenant, 1945, p. 150).
