What is "Any TM: Any file-based TM"?

I have been sent a package (Studio 2017) but when I tried to add in my own TM, I realised the package had been configured for Belgian French whereas my TM was French French. However, Studio suggested that I instead use the option "Any TM: Any file-based TM". I have never before even seen this option - How does it differ from the "File-based Translation Memory" option that I usually use?

it allows you to use TMs with different language variants. As far as I know, the TMs are updated normally.
