I will refrain from making any bad comment about Studio Oct 9, 2013

but I just can't stand how badly conceived this software is. Nor do I have the time to try and understand why it works so badly.

I just had the same problem. I ticked the options, for both Word versions just to be on the safe side (even though I needed to import a docx file, not a doc one). I didn't help.

Then I went to the menu option "Project settings" (Paramètres de projet, in French) under Tools.

You have the same list of files there as in under Tools > Options > File Types. Except that, after checking, I saw that these very options I had just ticked under Options showed up as unticked. I selected the same boxes, except under this different menu option, and it worked.

What a waste of time.

At present there are 3 (three) versions of Studio: 2009, 2011 (with a few service packs), and 2014. Would you mind mentioning which version do you use?

Sorry, I also meant to mention the SP I have.

I have Studio 2011 SP2R.

Save your file as .docx and change its extension to .doc Jan 9, 2014

Hello, everyone.

I tried the "tick" method. But, it did not work for me.

The rtf approach did work for me.

However, my word file ended up being 90MB in size, which was too big.

So, I was looking for some other ways to open my file with Trados 2011.

What I did was convert my PDF file into .docx and then save it as .doc.

And, it worked.

I hope it works for you too.

Thank you.

just select all, paste in a new word document Feb 26, 2014

This works for me. I would use finereader to convert a pdf into a word, then select all and copy in a new document. Otherwise, trados would not open it.

Copy & Paste Worked! Jul 30, 2014

I had the exactly same problem today and "copy & paste the whole text to a new file" worked!

Thank you very much. This topic really helped me.

Converted to doc Sep 1, 2014

Hi,

I had the same problem today. But I just Save as Doc and the Word automatically converted to docx and I got a light weight file to open easily in Studio 2011.

Cheers,
Ragland.

ABBY is to blame. Nov 18, 2014

Had the same problem with .doc files created by ABBY PDF Transformer.

Apparently, those files have .doc extension, but are actually .rtf inside. Using Save As on the files in MSWord have .rtf as the default option. Choosing .doc in Save As solved my problem.

"tw4WinMark style is not defined" error message May 5, 2015

Here's another solution, since I had problems opening docx and doc files in sdl 2011 sp2 despite making the changes proposed under Options in SDL 2011.

1. If doc fails to open in sdl 2011, open the doc file in MS Word and save it as docx file.
Reopen the new docx file in sdl 2011.

2. If docx fails to open in sdl2011, open the docx file in MSWord and save it as doc file.
Reopen the new doc file in sdl 2011.

Hope this works for you as well.

I face with the same concern with opening word 97-2003 file, I save as rtf file, but the content is collapsed, then I try to save as docx file and it works.

I took your method one step further and simply renamed the extension .doc to .docx, and this worked in my case.

Some notes on this error Jun 5, 2015

I came across this error again today, and since there appears to be some confusion about it, I'll try to explain what's going on based on my imperfect knowledge of the Studio file parsing system.

The Studio file types are applied hierarchically, the ones on the top of the list before the ones below. There can be several file types for a single extension, the relevant one in this case being .doc, where both the Word 2003-2007 and the Translator's Workbench file type may apply. Even i

Even if a file type can be used with a certain extension, that's not always done, as the file must fulfill certain conditions: it has to be a valid file of the filetype, and it may have to conform to some special conditions (for instance the Word 2003-2007 file type uses the presence of the tw4WinMarkStyle to skip Translator's Workbench files, unless the special option is used).

The way the file type pipeline is set up by default is that if a doc file fails the Word 2003-2007 parsing for any reason, the file will pass on to the Translator's Workbench file type, which will parse the file if it's valid bilingual Trados file, but reject it if it's anything else. In practice this means that all invalid doc files will fail at the Trados filter, and you will receive this error message. Of course the error message is completely misleading, since the real error has happened in the Word 2003-2007 file type.

In my current case the error was caused by the doc file being actually an rtf file with a doc extension, but it could have been caused by many other reasons as well. So the takeaway message from this mail is that if you encounter this error and you know that the file is not a bilingual file, your doc file is probably corrupt in some way. But there's no one fix that will work in all cases.

this worked for me: Sep 12, 2015

This happened to me twice...

The tick option worked for a while and then stopped...

I saved my doc as docx...

it worked.. go figure... I guess that you have to change the source doc format somehow...

I use studio 2014 in a windows 10 OS
