Well, I just have experienced recently this good old "secret shopper" scam joke. Today, the guy's name is Shaun Stanmore:

2. A cheque would be sent to you to enable you have funds that would be transferred to another mystery shopper like you who would be evaluating another western union office in his / her location
3. You deposit the cheques into your account.

And I don't think there is much point to sending these "privately" to proz as suggested by site staff, as these e-mails are just too obvious. Some young/inexperienced/new translator might fall for it, if they check out proz and find he's a paying member.
This is a new dimension of scam: they are actually *investing real money* in a profile first to make them look real.

This is a large-scale fraud.
And it seems to be quite lucrative, otherwise they wouldn't invest more than 100 Euros per profile for membership here.
If you block these profiles, they can still be found by members. And those who are likely to fall for this just need to see the membership and be assured they can enter into a business relationship with them.
Doesn't matter that these profiles are blocked, as far as I know, the block isn't visible to other members.

No, it isn't "just a survey" they are asking you to participate in.
They are actually conning you out of money. Because once you pay in the cheque you find that it's a faked cheque. And end up out of pocket...

Just think about it for a moment: what criterion could ProZ use to filter such e-mails? It would be nice to reject all e-mails from Gmail accounts — but as has been discussed at great length before in the forums, there are some people who do use these 'free' services quite legitimately for their professional purposes; personally, I think this is unwise and shows a lack of professionalism, but there are clearly 2 schools of thought on this issue. I myself do have a Gmail account, which I use only when I am having access problems with my other ISPs.
However, on what other basis could mails be filtered? I doubt the system is sophisticated enough (yet?) to filter on actual e-mail content — and even if it were, imagine the endless task of manually programming filter terms like 'secret shopper'; just like virus signatures, it could only ever be re-active.
Paying members do have the option to have e-mails sent via their profile vetted by staff first; this does seem like a good idea, though I can't help thinking that if everyone took up the option, the whole system might get a bit bogged down!
In this instance, the mail was sent from an active ProZ.com profile — in this situation, I guess it wouldn't be difficult for the site to simply remove that profile; did you report this mail as scam, so that they know to take action? I see the profile is still there, which seems surprising. However, these people have got nothing to lose, they will just create new profiles...
I think we all have to accept that one way or another, such messages are going to arrive in our in-boxes, and it really behoves each one of us to be vigilant and take responsibility for our own security; I really don't think we can expect ProZ to expend massive resources in some kind of almost certainly futile attempt to 'nanny' us all.
