Google has just released its own Instant Menssenger. So far the interface looks pretty weak but it's still in beta. You need to have a gmail account to use it.

Google messenging Feb 18, 2021

Google Hangouts is Google's current messaging service, apparently to be replaced by Google Chat, which will probably be gone in 5 years if trends with Google's messaging services up to this point hold true.
