Since many CAT tools now come with a “Custom MT” section, this can help connect a MT we want to use in our CAT even if a specific connector hasn’t been created for it in our favourite CAT.
This approach exists in many CATs now, this thread can be a way to keep them all in one place.

This approach exists in many CATs now, this thread can be a way to keep them all in one place.

I know this approach exists in Wordfast Server, Wordfast Classic and Wordfast Anywhere. CAT tools like SDL or MemoQ have a plugin system where each MT vendor must develop a specific plugin for their MT to work in the CAT.

The “Custom MT fields to fill” approach requires a bit more work at the beginning but offers a lot of flexibility that the plugin method doesn’t afford, let me explain:
_Every 2-3 years, MT vendors, will make improvements to how a CAT should access the MT results. This makes the connector obsolete. Thus, it creates a gap when the service no longer works on the old connector while the new connector is being developed.
_MTs developed by Universities etc. do not get the connector development treatment because of the time and costs of developing one. So, they usually are not accessible from a CAT tool.
Hence, having empty fields that can be filled up according to the needs of each MT affords flexibility and can be used by virtually any MT having an API that can be accessed remotely.

If that’s your first time reading something like this, it may be hard to grasp at first, but, follow this thread, as material and videos are added, this will start to make sense.

Be well

Wordfast Server, use case: ModenMT in Wordfast Pro 5 + YouTube Video Sep 1, 2020

Many have come to see that ModernMT performs very well for their language pair and type of documents.
The Custom MT capabilities in WFS allow you to connect it to Wordffast pro 5 and to get very fast response time. If you’re a freelancer, this method is free and you just need to pay for your ModernMT API key.

Setup is done in about 15-20 mins. It’s explained step by step in this video:

Now, as you may know, you can connect WFS to many CATs (Wordfast Pro 5, Wordfast Pro 3, Wordfast Classic, MemoQ, SDL 2019, Wordfast Anywhere). So, the beauty of this is that you can setup only once your MT in WFS and use it in many tools.

This approach is not limited to ModernMT, you can connect many other MTs in WFS this way.

You can copy-paste from the description section below the video. Future versions of the WFS manual will feature templates for many MTs (Systran, Yandex, DeepL, Google, Basques etc.)

Hope this is useful.
