Yep, that's exactly how I felt.

BTW, I think the audience needs to loosen up a little.

Wenjer,

I guess you just had to be there.

Also you have to acknowledge that the anchor reading the script is topnotch.

By the way, Steven, do you know what it means by "knocking off into the air"? Hmm..., maybe this is a good KudoZ question.

http://dict.die.net/knock%20off/

No, I never heard of that expression.

But I think it could mean to kill someone off, like the Mafia knocking a person off into non-existence.

Knock off could also be used in the situation where someone is retiring from doing something, for example, "I think I'll knock off for today."

Do you have more context on how it was used?

more on "knock off" Oct 15, 2007

Wenjer Leuschel wrote:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/knock%20off

22. knock off
a. Informal. to cease activity, esp. work: to knock off at five every day.
b. to stop doing something; quit: Knock it off or you'll get into a mess.
c. Slang. to dispose of; finish.
d. Slang. to murder; kill.
e. Slang. to die.
f. Slang. to get rid of; reduce.
g. Slang. to disable or defeat.
h. Slang. to commit a robbery at; steal from: The gang knocked off a gas station.
i. Nautical Slang. to blow the head (of a sailing vessel) off the wind.
j. to imitate, copy, or plagiarize: to knock off designer dresses in cheap materials.

Wenjer,

I've mentioned the type of usages listed in a) and d)

c), e), and f) are also possibilities in my opinion. I think it depends on the context.

This satisfies my curiosity. I didn't know that it could mean so many different things.

Name that tune Oct 16, 2007

Thanks, pk.

BTW, does anyone know the title of the music played leading into the conference? I tried searching for 解放军进行曲、运动员进行曲; but it was neither of these. I remember this piece customarily being played preceding the opening of big events like this. Yet I don't think I ever bothered to find out what the title of it was.
