How does "Replace characters at source transfer" actually work?

Could someone please tell me Replace characters at source transfer actually works?
Can it be used when transferring the source segment to the target, via the green arrow down?
Should the characters defined here be adapted?
Can it be used for strings (like words) too?
I'm totally in the dark here, I'm afraid.

Transfer numbers to matches

This replacement option is a helper to "Transfer numbers to matches" feature. It lets the user replace the defined characters in numerical expression during the transfer from the source to the target segment.
