Coma? Jan 4, 2017

How could you possibly NOT let a deadline slip if you were in a coma?

Flu or migraine Jan 4, 2017

It's a question of whether I can deliver work to the standard the client expects.

Hospitalised with a broken leg - which has never happened - would in theory at least let me go on translating. A snuffly cold did not stop me in November, but a temperature and flu might affect my work, and I know migraine attacks do.

I call or mail the client and tell them what the problem is, then we decide what to do. Agencies are often able to find another translator. I have also taken

It is definitely best to let the client know when you are not working at full capacity. It can usually be sorted out, and you don't lose the client. It is not fair to the client if you struggle on and then deliver poor quality work. They know we're human, or else they should be reminded!

This happened to me towards the end of March last year.
My leg from the knee down swelled up enormously and I was basically hospitalized on the spot after receiving the results of a CT scan and ultrasound. They'd found blood clots in my left leg, the largest of which was about 22 cm long, and part of it had traveled to my left lung. I'd also been seeing bright flashing lights in the peripheral area of my field of vision, which apparently happens as a result of the brain trying to compensate for a blocked blood vessel. Fortunately, the MRI came back with no blood clot related abnormalities. It was caused momentarily by something else, which was benign.

As a result of this, I had to cancel three big jobs and lost a lot of income. It also took over three months to get regular work again from customers. That hurt more than the hospitalization.

The moral of the story is:

"Beware of sitting down for long periods without sufficient exercise"

a cause of deep vein thrombosis. I wonder which profession would fall under this category?

My wife's funeral was last week, so I've asked my clients for looser deadlines until the end of next week, when I'll be back in Spain.

I don’t get sick very often, I’m a good time manager and I'm known to deliver ahead of time. In over 30 years, I can’t recall ever delivering an assignment late, but I'm sure that if it ever did occur, it would be due to circumstances beyond my control like a sudden serious illness and in this case my “back-office” (meaning my daughter and business associate) knows what to do. In over 30 years I had 4 days of bed rest because of back pain (herniated disc) plus 5 days in the hospital for surgical removal of thyroid nodules but it wasn’t a sudden event and I had all the time needed to organize myself. I haven't had a cold or flu in years and I don’t drink alcohol. I suffer from retinal migraines but in general these last less than an hour and fortunately these episodes have been very sporadic…Collapse

because of the illness. Usually a serious cold which I get once a year - donated by my children.
And then I just sleep for 2 or 3 days and I amusually back on my feet (or desk). As soon as I realise that the cold is coming and I have a deadline, I try to finish the urgent jobs and pussh off the other ones which is usually not so much of a problem.

Chris, competition with anonymous? This is the second or third poll from you since you have renewed... ;-/

Its SNOWING

My sincere condolences, Neil. May she rest in peace, and may you and your family find the courage to go on.

This is indeed the worst possible reason.

Dear Julian, luckily I survived the same, I am glad you are here and I wish you to raise your income three times in 2017 and compensate all the loss!
