Source text - Spanish Al hacer balance del racismo observado en el Estado español durante el año 2005, nos viene inevitablemente a la memoria la imagen de personas esposadas dentro de un autocar, llevadas a algún lugar remoto del desierto argelino o mauritano. Personas que salieron hace meses, si no años, de su país subsahariano de origen, empujadas por la falta de trabajo o de libertades (frecuentemente de ambas cosas) y emprendieron la dura ruta de la inmigración irregular ante la imposibilidad de entrar de forma legal en el continente europeo. Personas que llegaron a la frontera de Ceuta o de Melilla después de mucho sufrimiento, y se instalaron en los precarios campamentos fronterizos esperando el momento de saltar la valla, bajo el constante asedio de la policía marroquí, que les somete a abusos y extorsiones, según nos relatan varios testimonios. Personas que, en su intento de acceder al supuesto baluarte de la democracia y de los derechos humanos, se encontraron con disparos, golpes y esposas, y acabaron abandonadas en el desierto o encarceladas en Marruecos.
Al menos catorce muertos durante los hechos de Ceuta y Melilla, más todos los muertos en las aguas del Estrecho y en las costas canarias. Una sola muerte sería ya demasiado. Centenares de muertes, año tras año, son la muestra dramática del fracaso de la política europea de inmigración, y también de las consecuencias de un modelo de mundialización que acrecienta progresivamente el abismo de desigualdad entre el continente europeo y el africano.
Translation - English When assessing the racism observed in Spain in 2005, what inevitably comes to mind is the image of handcuffed people in buses, being taken to some remote place in the Algerian or Mauritanian desert. People who, months if not years ago, had left their home countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, pushed by the lack of jobs or freedom (often both). People who, faced with the impossibility of enterring Europe legally, took the harsh route of irregular immigration.
People who arrived at the borders of Ceuta or Melilla after much suffering, and set up precarious border-camps, waiting for the moment to jump the fence. Here they were besieged constantly by the Moroccan police, suffering abuse and extortion according to various testimonies. People who, in their attempt to enter the supposed bulwark of democracy and human rights, came up against shootings, beatings and handcuffs, and ended up abandoned in the desert or imprisoned in Morocco.
At least fourteen people died during the events of Ceuta and Melilla, plus all those who died in the waters of the Straits of Gibraltar and on the coasts of the Canary Islands. Even one death would be too many. Hundreds of deaths, year after year, are dramatic evidence of the failure of the European immigration policy, and also of the consequences of a model of globalization which progressively exacerbates the chasm-like rich/poor divide between Europe and Africa.

Source text - Spanish En Estados Unidos, entre 1880 y 1930 la generación de la fuerza mecánica pasó de hacerse con motores hidráulicos primarios y máquinas de vapor a motores eléctricos, logrando con ello un ahorro de energía y grandes aumentos en la productividad . Ahora bien, en la economía líder, el despegue no se produjo verdaderamente antes del cambio de siglo. Todavía en 1899 los motores eléctricos aportaban únicamente el 5 por ciento de la fuerza mecánica industrial. Una década más tarde el porcentaje había saltado al 25 por ciento, y en la siguiente –1909-1919– adquirieron ya un peso mayoritario, reforzando su hegemonía a lo largo de los años 1920 . En otros países industrializados se observa igualmente el arranque en el primer decenio del siglo y una fuerte aceleración en el segundo, de manera que, una vez terminada la Guerra Mundial, la electricidad adquiere una presencia dominante como fuerza motriz para la industria (además de fuente de luz y calor) .
Es harto difícil saber si América Latina progresó al mismo paso que las economías más avanzadas. Entiéndase bien: estoy refiriéndome al cambio de fuente energética, no a la magnitud de la fuerza mecánica empleada por la industria. Como es bien sabido, en la época la industria latinoamericana estaba aún escasamente desarrollada. En todo caso, para poder determinar la importancia absoluta y relativa de la electricidad como fuerza motriz industrial se requiere disponer de censos industriales. Desgraciadamente, la mayoría de países latinoamericanos no llevaron a cabo hasta más tarde sus primeros censos al resultar operaciones demasiado complejas y costosas para administraciones públicas con pocos recursos . Las naciones que sí levantaron algún censo industrial antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial fueron las siguientes: Argentina en 1895, 1914 y 1935; Brasil en 1907 y 1920; Chile en 1894, 1911, 1928 y 1937; México en 1930 y 1935; República Dominicana en 1937; Uruguay en 1908 y 1930; y Venezuela en 1936 . Para colmo, algunos de esos censos proporcionan información que no es útil para nuestros propósitos, puesto que sólo registran el valor de la energía eléctrica consumida por los establecimientos industriales. Translation - English Between 1880 and 1930 in the United States, the generation of mechanical power shifted from hydraulic prime movers and steam engines to electric motors, thus saving energy and significantly increasing productivity. However, the real takeoff in the United States did not happen before the turn of the century. Even in 1899, electric motors only accounted for 5 percent of the industrial mechanical power. A decade later, this percentage had jumped to 25 percent, in the following decade (1909-1919) there was a preponderance of electric motors and this went from strength to strength throughout the 1920s . In other industrialised countries we observe a similar takeoff in the first decade of the century and a strong acceleration in the second. This meant that once the World War was over, electricity became the main motive power for industry (as well as being a source of light and heat) .
It is very difficult to know whether Latin America advanced at the same pace as the more developed economies. Let me clarify that I am referring to the change in the energy source, not the magnitude of mechanical power used by industry. As is well known, during this period Latin American industry was still poorly developed. Nevertheless, access to industrial censuses is essential to be able to determine the absolute and relative importance of electricity as the motive power of industry. Unfortunately, due to the complexity and cost of conducting censuses for public administrations with meagre resources, most Latin American countries did not carry them out until later . Those countries which conducted industrial censuses before the World War II included the following: Argentina in 1895, 1914 and 1935, Brazil in 1907 and 1920, Chile in 1894, 1911, 1928 and 1937, Mexico in 1930 and 1935, the Dominican Republic in 1937, Uruguay in 1908 and 1930, and Venezuela in 1936 . What is more, some of these censuses provide data that is of little use to us, since they only record the value of electricity consumed by industrial establishments. In the other censuses, with few exceptions, no distinction is made between prime movers, electric generators or electric motors, making it impossible to accurately assess their relative weight within mechanical power used by industry . With all of these provisos, it is hardly surprising that we can only trace sporadically and approximately, the progress in electricity use by Latin American industry for a few countries and for specific years.

Source text - Spanish La producción azucarera del período 1816-1868 creció a una tasa del 5,6% anual lo que genera una fuerte presión sobre otras actividades como el cultivo y exportación de tabaco, además de las ganaderas. Se produce una concentración de los cultivos comerciales aprovechando la ventaja comparativa que existía y una especialización en términos de rentabilidad. Así en la década de 1840 se produce una gran expansión de la actividad azucarera apoyada en la existencia de una capacidad tecnológica y financiera para hacer frente a la competencia en los mercados internacionales y la presión fiscal de la metrópoli.
La participación de las exportaciones de azúcar en el total de exportaciones cubanas, desde mediados del siglo XIX, ha fluctuado en torno al 70%, sin embargo esta evolución ha dependido del comportamiento global del mercado azucarero. A partir de la independencia de Cuba la actividad exportadora de este producto crece rápidamente, alcanzando niveles superiores al 80% dentro del total de exportaciones, esto se explica por la dependencia absoluta con Estados Unidos una vez que Cuba logra su independencia de España.
Estados Unidos fue el principal mercado al que se exportaba azúcar en 1841 y representaba el 29% del total exportado, España el 15,3%, Rusia el 9,9% y Alemania el 9,5%. En 1860, Estados Unidos representaba el 58,5% de las exportaciones de azúcar y le seguía bastante lejos Inglaterra con una participación del 16,7% y España con un 7,7%. En el año 1880, a los Estados Unidos se destinaba el 81,6% de las exportaciones de azúcar. Luego de la Independencia de Cuba, la totalidad del azúcar fue exportada a Estados Unidos, pero no se procesaba totalmente sino que se realizaba el proceso industrial hasta la fase de azúcar crudo y, finalmente, se refinaba en el país de destino.
Este período y hasta inicios del siglo XX, Cuba inicia el tránsito desde una economía de base orgánica a una basada en los combustibles fósiles, Fundes, R. (2004, p. 26).
Para el año 1827, Marrero, L. (1984, p. 61) estimaba que el 90% del territorio cubano correspondía a bosques, montes y otros tipos de paisajes, un 4,2% se encontraba bajo cultivo y un 5,8% estaba destinado a pastos. En 1846 los bosques y terrenos áridos representaban el 74,6% de territorio y en 1862, el 57,4%. Entre ambas fechas la superficie de bosques había pasado de 409.825 a 250.845 caballerías.
Entre 1828 y 1877, Funes, R. (2004, p. 221) señala que desaparecieron 2.352.539 hectáreas de bosques lo que representa un 35,1% del área existente en el año inicial. Esta explotación del bosque tenía como objetivos la obtención de leña, carbón vegetal, usos para el ferrocarril, las empresas navieras de vapor, el comercio interior y exterior de maderas y la actividad ganadera en otras zonas para abastecer a las plantaciones esclavistas.
La necesidad de extender el cultivo de caña llevó a que se construyera una red ferroviaria que permitiera disponer de nuevos cañaverales, así en 1837 se inaugura el tramo del ferrocarril que unió La Habana con Bejucal y en 1838 se completa la red hasta Güines. En la década de 1850 el ferrocarril se extiende desde el oeste al centro de la Isla. Con esta red que cada vez cubría más territorios, se logró reducir el costo de los fletes del azúcar un 70% aproximadamente.
La utilización de la leña se puede dividir en dos períodos: (a) 1815-1840 cuando se inicia la era del vapor en los ingenios azucareros y (b) 1840-1860 cuando se produce una crisis de combustibles de base orgánica.
Translation - English Sugar production in the period 1816-1868 grew at an annual rate of 5.6%, exerting great pressure on other activities such as the cultivation and exportation of tobacco as well as stock farming. There was a surge in cash crops, as a consequence of the comparative advantage they enjoyed, and a specialisation driven by profitability. Thus, the 1840s saw a great expansion in the activity of the sugar industry, supported by its technological and financial capacity to face up to competition on the international markets and tax pressure from the metropolitan state.
From the mid-19th century, the share of sugar in total Cuban exports fluctuated at around 70%. This evolution, however, depended on the global behaviour of the sugar market. From Cuban independence onwards sugar exports grew rapidly to over 80% of total exports, which can be explained by Cuba’s absolute dependence on the United States once it gained independence from Spain.
The United States was the main market for sugar exports in 1841 representing 29% of total sugar exported, Spain 15.3%, Russia 9.9% and Germany 9.5%. In 1860, the United States represented 58.5% of sugar exports, followed at distance by England at 16.7% and Spain at 7.7%. In 1880 81.6% of sugar exports were destined to the United States. After Cuban independence all sugar was exported to the United States, although without being fully processed. Instead, it was industrially processed up to the raw sugar stage and finally the sugar was refined in the United States.
From this period until the beginning of the 20th century Cuba began the transition from an organic economy to a fossil fuel one (Funes, R. 2004, p. 26).
Marrero, L. (1984, p. 61) estimated that in 1827 90% of Cuban territory was constituted by forest, woodlands and other landscapes, 4.2% was cultivated and 5.8% was used for pasture. In 1846 forests and arid lands made up 74.6% of the territory and in 1862, 57.4%. Between these dates the surface area of the forests had dropped from 409.825 a 250.845 caballerías.
Between 1828 and 1877 Funes, R. (2004, p. 221) points out that 2,352,539 hectares of forest disappeared, which represented 35.1% of the area existing in 1828. The forest was exploited in this way in order to obtain firewood, charcoal, wood for use in the railways, by shipping companies, and in domestic and foreign timber trade. Forest was cleared in other regions to gain territory for stock farming to supply the plantations.
The need to extend sugarcane cultivation led to the construction of a railway system to provide access to new sugar plantations. Thus, in 1837 the stretch of railway connecting Havana and Bejucal was inaugurated and in 1838 the line was completed to Güines. In the 1850s the railway extended from the west to the centre of the island. As the rail system covered more and more territory, the cost of sugar transportation was reduced by approximately 70%.
The utilization of firewood can be divided into two periods: (a) 1815-1840, which was the beginning of the steam era in the sugar refineries and (b) 1840-1860 when there was a biofuel crisis.

It should be noted that the GDP per capita at PPP of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica and Venezuela from 1920 or 1929 was below that of the United Kingdom and the United States in 1820 (for Panama there is no data until 1945).

Source text - Catalan El principal objectiu del treball és l’anàlisi dels grups socials que van formar el Banco de Barcelona entre 1844 i 1854. Aquesta institució va ser important per a la història financera i bancària d’Espanya per ser pionera en la seva activitat creditícia i d’emissió: a més, la seva experiència va servir com a base en la constitució d’un sistema financer modern a Espanya.
En una societat com la catalana de mitjans del segle XIX, la confiança era un factor important per explicar la decisió d’invertir. L’aparició de noves companyies i les seves necessitats d’inversió van transformar el comportaments previs. Quin va ser el comportament dels inversors potencials? Va ser el grup que hi havia al voltant del banc el que va ascendir econòmicament en els anys centrals del segle XIX? La resposta és prou clara, els membres del consell d’administració del Banc de Barcelona formaven un grup apart dins dels grups que sorgeixen a l’economia catalana en el seu conjunt.
Translation - English The main objective of our work is the analysis of the social groups which constituted the Banco de Barcelona between 1844 and 1854. This institution was important for the financial and banking history of Spain as a pioneer in credit and issuing activities; moreover its experience served as a base for the constitution of the modern Spanish financial system.
In a society like that of Catalonia in the mid 19th century, confidence is an important factor for explaining investment. The appearance of new companies with their investment requirements transformed previous modus operandi. How did potential investors behave? Did a powerful investing group grow around the bank and ascend economically throughout the central years of the 19th century? The result of this research shows clearly how the members of the administration board of the Banco de Barcelona were concentrated in different investor groups throughout the Catalan economy.

Source text - Spanish Durante el ciclo salitrero el desarrollo industrial en esas provincias es importante, impulsado por la expansión de la demanda, sobre la base de sectores industriales orientados a la producción de bienes de consumo no duradero. Este crecimiento de la ocupación industrial en estas provincias mineras tiene como resultado, los mayores niveles de dispersión industrial que se observan en el país. Esta expansión tiene su impacto sobre el impulso industrial de la propia provincia y, dentro del mercado doméstico, en aquellas provincias con una suficiente capacidad de respuesta. Durante el ciclo del cobre el resultado no es tan claro. El impacto sobre la industria es mucho más limitado a sectores más estrechamente ligados a la producción minera mucho más intensivos en capital (bienes de equipo). Esto hace que la mayor dispersión de la minería durante el ciclo del cobre no tiene los mismos efectos de arrastre y el crecimiento de la ocupación industrial es mucho más limitado. En este contexto son otros los factores que impulsan el crecimiento de la ocupación industrial (economías de aglomeración). Estas son las que nos llevan al periodo de máxima concentración de la industria por la expansión de Santiago.
Translation - English During the nitrate cycle as a result of growing demand, there is significant industrial development in these provinces led by the industrial sectors that produced non-durable consumer goods. As a result of this growth in industrial employment in these mining provinces, the highest levels of industrial dispersion in the country are registered. This expansion impacted in the industrial thrust of the province itself, within the domestic market, in those provinces with sufficient response capacity. During the copper cycle the result is not as clear. The impact in industry is much more limited to those sectors most closely linked to mining production, more capital-intensive (equipment goods). This means that the greater dispersion of mining during the copper cycle does not have the same backward link, and growth in industrial employment is far more limited. In this context, there are other factors which boost growth in industrial employment (agglomeration economies). These factors bring about a period of maximum concentration of industry due to the expansion of Santiago.

Source text - Spanish Este trabajo pretende aplicar el análisis de redes sociales (basada en redes de propiedad cruzada) al análisis del comportamiento empresarial en un periodo histórico, el de mediados del siglo XIX, de enorme importancia para la historia empresarial de Cataluña y de España, coincidiendo con la etapa inicial de la transformación industrial de la región. Con ello buscamos encontrar respuestas a algunas de las preguntas que se han formulado en estos últimos años alrededor de las estrategias que siguieron los inversores, el papel que tuvieron determinados sectores económicos en la formación y desarrollo de las empresas (y dentro de ellos, el papel concreto jugado por algunas empresas), la forma jurídica que tomaron las empresas con un mayor peso en la red y la importancia que pudo tener el origen exterior del capital. Algunas de estas preguntas serán objeto de estudio en este trabajo, otras muchas seguirán pendientes para un análisis futuro.
Translation - English This study aims to apply the analysis of social networks (based on networks of overlapping ownership) to the analysis of the behaviour of business in a historical period, that of the mid-19th century, of enormous importance in the business history of Catalonia and Spain, coinciding with the initial period of the industrial transformation of the region. In this way, we search for answers to some of the questions formulated in recent years regarding strategies followed by investors, the role of certain economic sectors in the formation and development of the companies (and within them, the specific role played by some companies), the legal structure taken by companies with greater weight within the network and the importance that the external source of capital might have had. Some of these questions will be studied in this paper; many others will remain pending for future analysis.
