Je pensais en route : Est-ce un grand mal de ne pas avoir vu Smara au soleil couchant, de ne pas m’être assis devant ces ruines, de ne pas avoir appuyé longuement mes yeux sur ses édifices, sur ses horizons ? – Peut-être pas. Je ne me sens pas d’humeur à imiter Chateaubriand sur le Forum romain.
Je ne suis pas venu ici pour cela.
Le corps : ces choses qui me préoccuperaient, ptôse des organes, les dos qui se voûte – ici peu importe.
Que peu de haltes encore j’espère – que peu de nuits ! Ces haltes, les dernières, quand il n’y en aura plus qu’une, que deux avec les chikhs, quelle valeur renouvelée elles prennent, elles prendront pour moi: le partage en cinq parts de la viande, le tirage au sort, etc., comme les dernières cerises les plus belles, au fond du compotier.
Le retour : en plus de cette joie profonde, admirable, venant de nos vies renouvelées ou plutôt hardiment poussées sur un chemin merveilleux – que je ne dirai point –, je songeais, avec quel plaisir, au bain chaud que je prendrais tout de suite – à la première minute –, au premier repas, à la première nuit. Ne plus avoir de poux, ne plus avoir si froid ou si chaud. Dormir dans un lit. Manger. Retrouver tout cela après deux mois très durs, l’acte accompli.
Marché hier soir de 5 heures et demie à 8 heures et demie à travers des vallonnements assez forts. C’est pendant cette marche que je me fis ces réflexions ; (…)

Не будет больше вшей, не будет ни холода такого, ни жары такой. Буду спать в постели. Есть буду. После двух очень тяжелых месяцев, когда дело сделается, все это опять у меня будет.
Вчера я с полшестого до полдевятого вечера шел по довольно крутым холмам. И вот, когда шел, про все это мне и думалось…

The floor was of smooth, white stone; the chairs, high-backed, primitive structures, painted green: one or two heavy black ones lurking in the shade. In an arch under the dresser reposed a huge, liver-coloured bitch pointer, surrounded by a swarm of squealing puppies; and other dogs haunted other recesses.
The apartment and furniture would have been nothing extraordinary as belonging to a homely, northern farmer, with a stubborn countenance, and stalwart limbs set out to advantage in knee-breeches and gaiters. Such an individual seated in his armchair, his mug of ale frothing on the round table before him, is to be seen in any circuit of five or six miles among these hills, if you go at the right time after dinner. But Mr. H forms a singular contrast to his abode and style of living. He is a dark-skinned gipsy in aspect, in dress and manners a gentleman: that is, as much a gentleman as many a country squire: rather slovenly, perhaps, yet not looking amiss with his negligence, because he has an erect and handsome figure; and rather morose. Possibly, some people might suspect him of a degree of underbred pride; I have a sympathetic chord within that tells me it is nothing of the sort: I know, by instinct, his reserve springs from an aversion to showy displays of feeling- to manifestations of mutual kindliness. All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Все камни и развалины — иллюзия, раз на этих камнях нет меня. Все памятники для того единственно и существуют, чтобы к ним прислонилась моя жена. Никакие соборы никому не интересны, если рядом с собором нет моей идиотской улыбки. Я своим фотоаппаратом сгребаю в кучу все красоты, присваиваю их себе, ужимаю, приручаю и воспроизвожу на голой стене своей гостиной, чтобы доказать избранным из друзей и родных один невероятно важный факт насчет этих красот: я их видел, я там был, я все это фотографировал, и, следовательно, оно все существует.

When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.

Но тут я наверно забегаю вперед. Я верю, все у меня получится — отец из меня будет что надо. И вырастет у меня ребенок всесторонне развитый и образованный, достойный гражданин мира, и этому мужчине (или женщине) не за что будет на меня обижаться.
А потом вот так подумаю себе, что сидит там у жены «в животике» это дитя на полном обеспечении и вдруг испуганно раскрывает глаза от шальной мысли, пронзающей его мозг: «А что если мой папаша завалит это дело?»

Pour ma mère que je n’avais pas vue depuis ma naissance, le séjour de La Rochelle fut aussi l’occasion de la découvrir en entier. Je ne laissai pas, d’abord, d’être surprise qu’elle ne m’eût embrassée que deux fois, et seulement au front, après cette séparation assez longue ; encore ne devinais-je pas que ces deux baisers seraient les seules que je recevrais d’elle en ma vie. Je la trouvais aigre dans ses propos et impatientée des rires inconsidérés qui me prenaient devant les fantaisies de mes frères. « Décidément cette enfant n’est pas belle, dit-elle un jour devant moi à mon frère Constant, elle n’a que des yeux ; ils lui mangent la figure ; c’est une démesure fort ridicule».
Ce ne fut, cependant, que quelques jours après mon arrivée que ma réserve à son endroit devint une franche aversion : ce changement vint de la manière dont elle crut me devoir mener à l’église. The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake. | Traduction - russe

Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Где-то там, где кончаются мифы и начинается история, хитрющий везунчик Одиссей первым научился одурачивать богов. И самая хитроумная из всех его хитростей — привязать себя к мачте, пока пения сирен еще не было слышно. Кое-кто, конечно, не привязывался бы, а стоял у борта и рыскал шаловливым взором по горизонту. Но, если вы не из этих, выбирайте себе мачту, подбирайте канаты по вкусу: спорт, работа до седьмого пота, обет безбрачия с молитвенником и колоколом… Но безобиднее и надежнее всего, пожалуй, тросы и канаты, которыми вяжут людей по рукам и ногам в домиках на две семьи с кучей детей и женой, которая ведет неустанные бои с пылью на мебели.

Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival. | Traduction - russe

Женщины из Индии, уходя в себя, не реагировали на рукоприкладство мужей. Надо терпеть боль, убеждали они себя, надо к ней привыкнуть — привыкнуть, что сводит руки, что суставы проржавели насквозь, что спину, согнутую за годы сидения за швейной машиной, часто пронзают приступы боли; привыкнуть к мозолям на костяшках пальцев от стирки, к больным коленям, стоя на которых, они драили пол на кухне старыми мужниными кальсонами.
Когда мои родители садились смотреть вечером в субботу борьбу со стаканом чая с кардамоном и молоком, им хотелось повеселиться, посмеяться хотелось. Но еще им хотелось, чтобы хоть раз в жизни хороший выиграл у плохого, чтобы наглец и подлец получил по заслугам. Они молили Бога, чтобы тот, хороший, которого плохой скрутил в бараний рог или который держится за поясницу, превозмогая боль, не сдавался. Только бы он продержался еще немножко, перетерпел боль, выстоял до конца схватки. И тогда (ведь в борьбе всякое бывает!) он мог бы и победить. Правда, только по очкам. И у победителя не оставалось бы сил даже поприветствовать болельщиков. Суть его победы была бы уже в том, что он не проиграл.
