Berlusconi compie 80 anni: un traguardo e un inevitabile invito a fare bilanci. Operazione complessa per un uomo che si deve definire proteiforme. Perché in Berlusconi hanno vissuto tanti personaggi, anche contraddittori fra loro, ma costretti in qualche modo a fondersi in un’esperienza che non è eccessivo definire singolare.
Sulle sue qualità come sulle sue contraddizioni l’uomo ha costruito quasi una leggenda. Le fortune del suo esordio politico sono legate all’immagine del suo successo come imprenditore che si era costruito dal nulla. Allora il suo messaggio implicito era: se ce l’ho fatta io, ce la può fare anche l’Italia. I suoi avversari e anche i suoi nemici (le due categorie non coincidono) gli rinfacciavano se davvero credeva che per gestire le fortune di un paese potessero valere certe regole di spregiudicatezza che aiutano nella scalata al successo economico. La risposta di Berlusconi è sempre stata positiva.
Quando sarà possibile fare una valutazione storica sfuggendo alle passioni di parte, si dovrà misurarsi con l’inevitabile ambiguità del successo in politica, soprattutto quando questo arriva sotto le forme di un personaggio che si impone come arbitro di una fase di passaggio. Perché l’uomo di Arcore questo è stato: il protagonista di una grande e complicata fase di passaggio nella storia della politica italiana. Innanzitutto ha dettato una logica personalistica della battaglia politica che da noi era sconosciuta: non lo scontro fra due ideologie, ma la scommessa su un personaggio che prometteva di risolvere i problemi del paese. Il sistema era spaccato fra chi era con lui e chi era contro di lui, senza che nessun avversario sino all’ultima fase della sua avventura riuscisse a diventarne il contendente unico. Non è un dato banale, anzi quando era in auge è stato una radice della sua forza, perché è sempre riuscito a fare in modo che i suoi competitori venissero battuti non tanto da lui direttamente quanto dalle gelosie interne al campo dei suoi avversari.
Vista con un po’ di distacco è stata anche la sua debolezza, perché quel ruolo lo ha sempre costretto alla politica dello stare sopra le righe: non solo proclamando a ripetizione splendenti soli dell’avvenire che nascevano sul paese, ma anche finendo spinto a stili di vita che sottolineassero come chi era partito come un uomo comune era diventato un soggetto fuori del comune.
Si è discusso molto, forse troppo della politica dell’immagine e della comunicazione, magari dimenticando che il fenomeno andava ben oltre gli spazi della nostra vita nazionale. È però sbagliato credere che tutto sia stato solo immagine. Quel che Berlusconi ha realizzato nel momento del tracollo della prima repubblica è stata una operazione di tenuta del sistema, perché ha impedito che lo sbandamento delle sedimentazioni di potere aprisse una fase di guerra per bande senza regole e senza prospettive. Proprio la sua centralità semi-dittatoriale ha costretto tutti a ricomporre il puzzle degli schieramenti senza che nessuno potesse eccedere nella politica del “non si fanno prigionieri”. Non si può dimenticare che nell’ultimo quindicennio del XX secolo quella era una tentazione molto diffusa.
Il ventennio che da lui prende il nome è stato un coacervo di contraddizioni che in fondo non si è stati capaci di decifrare. Ne siamo poi finiti travolti tutti, ma non è serio attribuire al solo Berlusconi la colpa di quell’esito. Certo lui ha avuto non poche responsabilità, ma il paese gli è anche andato dietro, vuoi esaltandolo da cortigiani, vuoi condannandolo per partito preso.
Toccherà alla storia valutare a freddo e con la giusta distanza prospettica i risultati positivi e quelli negativi conseguiti in un ventennio vissuto sempre da protagonista, ma il solo fatto che la storia dovrà valutare questa esperienza è testimonianza che si tratta di un personaggio che rimane singolare e con cui non si può evitare di fare i conti.

Berlusconi and politics: success, failure, contradictions
Berlusconi at 80: a look back and, inevitably, an invitation to draw up the account. A complex operation for a man best described as another Proteus. Because many individuals have lived out their lives in Berlusconi, even contradictory among themselves, but driven in some way to amalgamate in an experience which it is not too much to call singular.
The man has, on his qualities as on his contradictions, built up a semi-legend. The success of his political debut is linked to the image of his success as an entrepreneur who made himself from nothing. And so his implicit message was: if I have done it, Italy can do it too. Both his opponents and his enemies (the two categories are not the same) threw this back at him: does he really believe that certain rules, lacking scruple and helpful to climbing the ladder of economic success, could be of value in managing the progress of a country? Berlusconi’s riposte was always positive.
When it becomes possible to make an historical judgement, avoiding partisan passions, it needs to be tackled with the unavoidable ambiguity of political success, above all when this happens in the shape of a character who establishes himself as the arbitrator of a transitional phase. For this is what the man of Arcore was: the protagonist of a great and complicated transitional phase of Italian history. First of all, he dictated a system of personalism for the political battle which was unknown to us: not the conflict between two ideologies, but betting on an individual who promised to resolve the country’s problems. The system was split between those for and those against him, without a single opponent up to the last phase of his venture succeeding in unseating him as the only contender. This is not a trivial point. On the contrary, when he was in fashion it was a root cause of his strength, because he always managed to ensure that his competitors were beaten not so much directly by him as by internal jealousies in his opponents’ camp.
Seen with a little detachment, it was also his weakness because this role always propelled him towards the politics of being larger than life: not only repeatedly proclaiming the brilliant dawns of the future arising over the country, but also ending up driven to life-styles that would emphasise how one who had started as an ordinary man had become a personality beyond the ordinary.
There has been much, perhaps too much, discussion of the image and the communication, to the point of forgetting that the phenomenon went well beyond the confines of our national life. However, it is wrong to think that it was all only am image. What Berlusconi brought about at the time of the collapse of the First Republic was an operation of system resilience, because he prevented the disbanding of the remains of power from leading to a phase of war for groups without rules or prospects. His semi-dictatorial centralism actually compelled everyone to work out the puzzle of alliances so that no one could go too far in the policy of 'take no prisoners'. And we should not forget that in the last fifteen years of the 20th century this was a widespread temptation.
The twenty-year period named after Berlusconi was an accumulation of contradictions which in the end cannot be deciphered. We were all finally swept away but this outcome cannot seriously be blamed on Berlusconi alone. Certainly he had no small responsibility for it, but the country was also there at the back of him, either exalting him like courtiers or condemning him out of preconceived opinions.
It will be left to history to evaluate from a fresh and more detached perspective the positive and negative results attained in twenty years in which he was always the main actor, but the very fact that history will need to weigh up this experience is evidence that we are talking of an individual who remains out of the ordinary and whom we cannot avoid taking into account.

«Giovanni, adesso bisogna marciare compatti. I toni della manifestazione della Lega non mi sono piaciuti...». Oltre i puntini di sospensione della considerazione che Silvio Berlusconi rivolge a Giovanni Toti, quando ieri sera se lo ritrova a cena ad Arcore, c’è tutta la voglia del leader forzista di lasciarsi alle spalle «senza ulteriori lacerazioni» il week-end delle prove generali del centrodestra spaccato. A Berlusconi, ovviamente, non è piaciuta l’autoproclamazione a leader di Salvini. Come non sono piaciute fino in fondo le presenze forziste nella piazza leghista.
Il fronte
Ma l’insieme di tutto questo, ad Arcore, non viene considerato un motivo per spezzare il fronte a poche settimane dal referendum. Tra Toti, cui i nemici attribuiscono velleità da coordinatore nazionale forzista, e Parisi, a cui l’ex premier ha affidato il compito di allargare il campo del centrodestra, Berlusconi non può scegliere uno solo rinunciando all’altro. Almeno per adesso. «Dobbiamo tenere tutti dentro», è l’adagio più gettonato a Villa San Martino.
La faida
Ma tenere tutti dentro, a leggere le dichiarazioni che scandiscono il tempo della faida interna a Forza Italia, pare davvero complicato. Parisi, intervistato ieri pomeriggio da Bianca Berlinguer a “Carta bianca”, è tornato alla carica contro i forzisti dell’ala pro-Salvini. «Toti», parole dell’ex ad di Fastweb, «ha sbagliato ad andare a Firenze perché lì Salvini ha detto che il centrodestra non c’è più e che lui è il leader della destra». E tutto succedeva mente proprio Toti, confidandosi con alcuni amici, lanciava strali contro le parole affidate da Parisi all’intervista di ieri al Corriere. «Leggo che Parisi non ha alcuna voglia di prendere la tessera di FI. O ha le idee confuse, oppure s’è messo in testa che il suo orizzonte è un partito del 2% che faccia concorrenza a quello di Alfano, che infatti s’è arrabbiato con lui...». Una posizione, questa, che verosimilmente il governatore della Liguria ha ribadito anche a Berlusconi.
La strategia
Già, Berlusconi. L’ex premier ha capito che l’unico modo per tenere tutti uniti è «cercare una strategia comune per il 5 dicembre». Se vincesse il No, è il suo ragionamento, «dobbiamo stare alla larga dal governo che arriverà dopo Renzi ma sederci al tavolo della legge elettorale». Già, ma quale legge? Berlusconi è convinto di riuscire a trovare un terreno comune col Carroccio partendo da due obiettivi. Primo, eliminare il ballottaggio dell’Italicum. Secondo, concentrarsi su un modello proporzionale. Il modello, su cui gli sherpa di Arcore avrebbero già l’ok di sinistra Pd e alfaniani, è un «Mattarellum rovesciato» con l’80% di eletti su base proporzionale (e senza preferenze) e il 20% coi collegi. In cambio del disco verde leghista, ma questa è la prospettiva, il numero uno forzista potrebbe iniziare a ragionare – ma senza dirlo apertamente – su uno schema che lasci agli elettori la scelta del leader del centrodestra che verrà. Se non proprio «le primarie» ancora ieri auspicate anche da Raffaele Fitto, qualcosa che ci si avvicini. Almeno un po’.

I did not like the overtones of the Lega’s rally…’ Beyond the implications in the point made by Silvio Berlusconi to Giovanni Toti when he entertained him to dinner at Arcore yesterday evening, lies the Forza leader’s strong wish to leave behind ‘without further damage’ the widespread evidence at the weekend of a divided centre-right. Berlusconi is clearly displeased by Salvini’s[2] announcement of his candidature for the leadership. Just as he thoroughly dislikes the Forza presence in the camp of the Lega Nord.
At Arcore, however, none of this is considered a reason to break ranks a few weeks before the referendum. Between Toti, whose enemies credit him with an over-weening ambition to be the Forza’s national co-ordinator, and Parisi,[3] to whom the ex-premier has entrusted the task of widening the base of the centre-right, Berlusconi cannot choose only one while rejecting the other. At least for now. ‘We must keep everyone within’ is the most popular saying at Villa San Martino.[4]
But to keep everyone within, judging by the utterances punctuating Forza Italia’s internal feud, seems truly complicated. Parisi, interviewed yesterday afternoon by Bianca Berlinguer on ‘Carta Bianca’,[5] took the offensive against the forzisti in the pro-Salvini wing. In the word’s of Fastweb’s former executive director, ‘Toti was wrong to go to Florence because there Salvini said that the centre-right no longer exists and that he is the leader of the right.’ And this was all happening while Toti, confiding in some friends, was launching volleys against Parisi’s words as reported in yesterday’s interview in Corriere. ‘I read that Parisi has no wish to be a card-carrying member of Forza Italia. Either his ideas are confused or the notion in his head is the horizon of a party of the 2% that will be the opposition to Alfano,[6] who is actually very angry with him.’ And this is a position that the Governor of Liguria has probably also stressed to Berlusconi.
Yes, Berlusconi. The ex-premier has understood that the only way to keep everyone united is ‘to seek a common strategy for the 5th of December.’[7] If the No vote wins, his reasoning goes, ‘We must steer clear of the government that will succeed Renzi, but seat ourselves at the table to discuss the electoral law.’ Quite so, but which law? Berlusconi is convinced that he will succeed in finding common ground with the Lega Nord, starting from two objectives: first, to abolish the Italian double ballot; secondly, to concentrate upon a proportional representation model. The model, upon which the Arcore functionaries would already have the go-ahead from the left-wing Democratic Party and the supporters of Alfano, is a ‘rolling ballot’ with 80% of members elected on a proportional basis and 20% by constituencies. In exchange for a green light from the Lega Nord – as is expected – the number one forzista could begin to consider – without saying so openly – a scheme which leaves the choice of the next centre-right leader to the electorate. If not really ‘the primaries’, also wished for yesterday by Raffaele Fitto, something that may come close. At least a little.

Erano stati rubati ad Amsterdam nel 2002, sequestrati dalla Gdf a Castellamare di Stabia
Due dipinti di Van Gogh dal valore inestimabile, rubati ad Amsterdam nel 2002 e”riapparsi” in mano alla camorra. I due dipinti “La Spiaggia di Scheveningen”, del 1882, e la “Chiesa di Nuenen”, del 1884, sono stati sequestrati dalla Guardia di Finanza durante una operazione nei confronti nei confronti di una associazione camorristica dedita al traffico di stupefacenti.
I due quadri del celebre pittore olandese erano stati rubati il 7 dicembre 2002 al Van Gogh Museum di Amsterdam insieme ad altri dipinti. Alcuni componenti della banda, ritenuta responsabile del furto, erano stati arrestati circa un anno dopo, ma la refurtiva non era stata recuperata. I due Van Gogh sono stati ritrovati dalla Guardia di Finanza in un locale di Castellammare di Stabia (Napoli) nel corso di un’attività investigativa per il contrasto alla camorra.
L’operazione, condotta dal Nucleo tributario della Gdf, ha portato al sequestro di beni per decine di milioni ai danni alcuni personaggi legati al clan Imperiale, radicato nell’area stabiese e dedito al traffico internazionale di cocaina. Raffaele Imperiale, detto “Lelluccio ’o parente”, sarebbe da tempo latitante a Dubai ma continuerebbe a tenere le fila di un traffico imponente di cocaina tra Sudamerica e Europa. Proprio in una delle case riconducibili a Imperiale sarebbero stati recuperati i quadri.

Il Museo Van Gogh aveva messo una “taglia” di 100 mila euro a disposizione di chi avesse fornito informazioni per recuperare i dipinti rubati.
Negli ambienti investigativi si vociferava da tempo dell’”investimento” fatto dalla camorra nei due dipinti.

Two priceless Van Gogh paintings, stolen from amsterdam in 2002 and 're-appeared' in the hands of the Camorra. the two paintings, 'The Beach at Scheveningen' of 1882, and the 'Church of Nuenen' of 1884, were seized by the GdF (Custom and Excise force) during an operation agaist a Camorra organisation given over to drug trafficking.
The famous Dutch painter's two works were stolen on the 7th of December 2002 from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Several members of the gang held responsible were arrested around a year later, but the stolen goods were not recovered. The two Van Goghs were found by the GdF in an area of Castellammara di Stabia (Naples) in the course of an investigation into the Camorra.
The operation, conducted by the GdF's Tax Unit, led to the seizure of goods worth tens of millions, to the loss of a number of individuals linked to the Imperiale clan, entrenched in the Stabia and given over to the international traffic in cocaine. Raffaele Imperiale, known as 'Lelluccio 'o parent' is said to have been on the run for some time in Dubai but continued to pull the strings of a considerable traffic in cocaine between South America and Europe. The paintings are reported to have been recovered in a house that can be traced back to Imperiale.
The Van Gogh Museum had offered a reward of 100,000 euros to anyone providing information leading to the recovery of the paintings.
In the milieu of investigations there have been rumours for some time of the 'investment' in the two paintings made by the Camorra.

Source text - Italian Virgilio sfrutta a pieno il potenziale espressivo di questa figura. Ciò appare evidente dalla sintomatica ricorsività degli aggettivi impiegati: dalla lettura dell’Eneide emerge, infatti, che essi presentano affinità semantiche e in molti casi sono caratterizzati da una marcata coloritura poetica.
La giustapposizione interstichica, oltre a rompere la monotonia del verso-frase, a volte con suggestivi effetti iconici (può sottolineare, come altri tipi di enjambement, un’idea di rapidità o eccitazione), ha spesso la funzione di mettere in rilievo aggettivi particolarmente significativi. Il carattere enfatico proprio della collocazione in fine di verso – si sposa, infatti, con l’effetto della spezzatura: l’aggettivo è evidenziato dalla pausa di fine verso e dall’isolamento rispetto al sostantivo.
Non è casuale ad esempio che tra gli aggettivi a più alta frequenza figuri ingens, notoriamente caro a Virgilio. In termini stilistici è giusto osservare che la pausa di fine verso in corrispondenza di un aggettivo indicante grandezza, come ingens, ha l’effetto di rinforzarne la semantica.
Ad ogni modo sarà utile ricordare che ogni figura non veicola per se sempre il medesimo effetto, ma deve essere valutata alla luce della semantica del passo e della sintomatica convergenza con altri tratti stilistici.

This is evident from the typical recurrence of the adjectives used: it emerges from reading the Aeneid that they present semantic affinities and in many instances are characterized by marked poetic colouring.
Interlinear juxtaposition, apart from breaking the monotony of the line–phrase, at times with marked iconic effect (it can emphasize, like other types of enjambement, an idea of rapidity or excitement), often has the function of bringing a particularly significant adjective into prominence. The emphatic character of line-end position is actually married to the effect of the break: the adjective is highlighted by its position at the line-end and by its separation from the noun.
It is not fortuitous, for example, that we find among the adjectives with the highest frequency ingens, a word known to be dear to Virgil. In stylistic terms it must be noted that the pause at line-end in coincidence with an adjective indicating bulk, like ingens, has the effect of reinforcing the semantics.
We should note that each stylistic figure does not always carry the same effect per se, but must be measured in the light of the semantics of the passage and of significant convergence with other stylistic features.
