Source text - Italian Le cronache di quegli anni sono occupate soprattutto dalle performances realizzate dai grandi gruppi del settore siderurgico e
meccanico, come l'Ansaldo e l'Ilva, il cui fatturato crebbe in misura
rilevantissima grazie alle commesse belliche, che offrirono a queste
imprese la liquidità necessaria ad espandersi in altri settori. L'Ansaldo, per esempio, rafforzò la sua presenza nel settore meccanico entrando nelle costruzioni aeronautiche e in quelle di
sommergibili, acquisì partecipazioni nel settore elettrico e tentò di
espandere ulteriormente la propria produzione siderurgica avviando
un grande progetto di sfruttamento delle risorse minerarie e
idroelettriche valdostane. L'Ilva, che nell'anteguerra si era dedicata
essenzialmente alla produzione di acciaio, acquisì forti partecipazioni nel settore meccanico. Entrambe le imprese crebbero enormemente negli anni della guerra: l'Ansaldo, il cui capitale sociale all'inizio del conflitto era di 30 milioni di lire, lo portò a 100 milioni nel 1916 e addirittura a 500 milioni nel corso del 1918, mentre il capitale sociale dell'Ilva giunse a toccare i 300 milioni.
Questi risultati spettacolari erano tuttavia legati alla congiuntura del
tutto eccezionale creata dalla guerra, e la crisi economica postbellica portò al crollo di queste grandi concentrazioni industriali: esse tornarono in buona parte sotto il controllo delle grandi banche miste, per finire poi all'inizio degli anni Trenta in mano allo Stato italiano, nell'ambito dell'Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI).
Translation - English Contemporary accounts are concerned principally with the
performances of the major iron/steel and engineering groups such as Ansaldo and Ilva, whose turnover grew to a significant degree as a result of winning military contracts, providing them with the liquidity they needed to expand into other sectors. Ansaldo, for example, strengthened its presence in the mechanical engineering sector, moving into aeronautical plane and submarine construction, acquired interests in the electrical sector and sought to expand further its steel business via a major initiative involving the mineral and hydroelectric resources of the Valle D'Aosta. Ilva, which in the pre-war years mainly concentrated on steel production, purchased significant interests in the engineering sector. Both groups grew enormously during the war, with Ansaldo's share capital increasing from 30 million Italian lira at the start of the war to 100 million in 1916 and as high as 500 million in 1918, while Ilva's share capital climbed to 300 million.
These spectacular results were, however, the fruit of the exceptional conditions created by the war. The post-war economic crisis led to the collapse of these major industrial conglomerates, which returned to a large degree under the control of the large universal (or 'mixed') banks, and then, at the start of the 1930s, of the Italian state, in the form of the Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI).

Il più italiano degli sprinter è un «man in black» più veloce della luce. Il suo nome è Usain Bolt, lo sprinter più famoso del mondo capace di farsi amare da una città intera come Roma. Il campione giamaicano è una star non solo per le sua performance sportive da vero fenomeno, ma anche per il suo carattere allegro, particolare e un po' pazzo.
UN FULMINE NELLA NOTTE DI ROMA. Durante la tappa italiana del Golden Gala di atletica leggera, il «gigante nero» di 196 cm ha vinto la gara dei 100 m con il tempo di 9''76, infiammando i 50 mila spettatori presenti allo Stadio Olimpico. Sperava di incontrare Totti, il capitano della Roma, e invece ha incoraggiato da lontano la Nazionale di calcio prima degli Europei 2012.
GRAN FINALE. Che l'Italia fosse nel suo cuore, lo si era già capito dall'inizio, quando, entrato in pista, il campione giamaicano aveva fatto il riscaldamento con la maglia di calcio della Nazionale, e aveva baciato il tricolore per la gioia di cameraman e spettatori. Ma il colpo di scena si è verificato dopo la gara. Il vincitore della gara più importante del meeting, i 100 m, ha «sfilato» per il campo tra gli applausi del pubblico, sventolando la bandiera italiana. Per la felicità di tutta l'Italia.

So now we know: the Jamaican lightning bolt is an Italian at heart. The world’s most famous sprinter may hit the headlines for his out-of-this-world sporting exploits, but the fans also appreciate his fun-loving style and zany antics. And the show he put on at Rome’s Golden Gala meet had the crowds in the Eternal City purring.
BOLT LIGHTS UP THE ROMAN NIGHT. At the Italian leg of the Diamond League series of international athletics meets, the 196 cm tall giant won the 100 metres in a time of 9.76, sending the crowd of 50 thousand at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico wild. Bolt had in the past expressed his desire to meet captain of AS Roma football team, Francesco Totti, and now he sent out a signal of support to the Italian national side as it prepares for the Euro 2012 tournament.
VICTORY LAP. Bolt made it clear from the off that he has a soft spot for Italy by coming out onto the track for his warm-up wearing the national side’s jersey and kissing the Italian flag, sending the cameramen and the crowd into raptures. And following his win in the night’s showcase event, he ran his victory lap flying the Italian flag, to the resounding applause of the Roman public and the delight of the entire nation.

attendibili, 3.760.000 uomini e 150.000 ufficiali. Si trattava di un
numero consistente, più della metà della somma totale dei partecipanti al conflitto nei quattro anni di guerra. La fine della guerra portava con sé la promessa, a questi uomini e alle loro famiglie, che il ritorno a casa sarebbe stato imminente.
Le cose andarono diversamente e la smobilitazione di una parte di
questi uomini durò fino al dicembre 1920, bloccata da diverse
circostanze che avevano a che fare con la politica interna ed estera
dell'Italia. In particolare, erano ostacoli determinanti al
completamento di questo processo la preoccupazione di ingigantire le fila della disoccupazione e della conflittualità sociale, conseguente
alle drammatiche condizioni economiche italiane. Alcuni elementi di
questa crisi, che troviamo accennata anche nelle righe di Rabito, erano visibili in Italia già dal 1917, ma la conflittualità si accese con grande intensità a partire dal 1919. La preoccupazione per la situazione sociale era resa più viva dalla necessità e dal desiderio del governo di un utilizzo di queste forze nell'ordine pubblico e dal desiderio di non mutare troppo gli equilibri politici interni determinati al conflitto.
Contava però anche la politica estera: ancora nell'estate del 1920, in un contesto diplomatico ancora in definizione, l'esercito italiano
continuava a mantenere più di 100.000 uomini nei Balcani (poco
meno della metà in Albania, poco meno di un terzo in Dalmazia e i
restanti tra Macedonia e Bulgaria), 72.000 in Libia, più di 10.000 in
Medio Oriente, Russia e nell'Egeo, a dimostrazione che sebbene la
guerra fosse finita, la dislocazione delle truppe fuori dai confini
nazionali (e coloniali) era rilevante.
Translation - English On 4 November 1918, according to the most reliable estimates, the
Italian army consisted of 3,760,000 soldiers and 150,000 officers.
This was a substantial number, amounting to more than half the sum total of all those who had fought in the four-year long conflict. For these men and their families, the end of the war brought with it the promise of an imminent return home.
Things, however, turned out differently. For many of them,
demobilization, delayed by a series of circumstances connected with
Italian domestic as well as external politics, would not occur until
December 1920. The main obstacles to the completion of demobilization were the government's fears of adding to the country's unemployed and of stoking the social tensions resulting from the dire economic straits the country found itself in. Some elements of this crisis—also hinted at in Rabito's memoirs—were already present in Italy in 1917, but the situation grew greatly in intensity from 1919 onwards. Additional factors in the slow demobilization were the state's intention to employ these forces in a public order role, as well its desire to avoid altering excessively the internal political balances established as a result of the war. External politics were a factor too: by the summer of 1920, in a diplomatic context that was still unfolding, the Italian army continued to maintain more than 100,000 men in the Balkans (a little more than half in Albania, a little less than a third in Dalmatia and the remainder in Macedonia and Bulgaria), 72,000 in Libya, and more than 10,000 in the Middle East, Russia and the Aegean area. Thus, although the war was over, there was still a significant presence of Italian troops situated outside of the national and colonial borders.
