Marketing - Produits alimentaires et laitiers / fruit products in store displays
Terme ou expression en français : PÔLES GOURMANDS
This is an ongoing project that I have been doing for a fruit growers cooperative. This is a set of instructions for setting up tasting tables to feature different products they offer, from different countries in the co-op.
This is a small, round table with about 25 items on it to attract customers to make a purchase. It has a book of recipes, the products on racks as well as a profile of the fruit grower him/herself.

I want to find a really good term in English for this and am not satisfied with any of my ideas. Your suggestions are welcomed.

Marc Glinert: 2:53pm Apr 19, 2007: Here we go again!!
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1848948
Elizabeth Lyons: 3:06pm Apr 19, 2007: Marc, your point is well taken. However, frankly, gourmand is usually simply "gourmand" or "gourmet" or "food lover" in the US - but I am not completely sure that leaving it as such is ideal in this instance. The client takes this quite seriously and sees this as a marketing tool. It is "poles" that creates the greater issue for me. It can be translated numerous ways. I appreciate all the ideas people are offering. Thanks, too, Marc, for those links.
Sandra Petch: 3:23pm Apr 19, 2007: Why not your own suggestion of "tasting tables"? I like the sound of those!
Elizabeth Lyons: 3:38pm Apr 19, 2007: Sandra - thank you for seconding that translation. I am just not 100% happy with that term and value all of your expert input(s). : )
David Goward: 3:56pm Apr 19, 2007: Are the "25 items" bits of fruit to sample or whole fruit to buy?
Martin Cassell: 3:56pm Apr 19, 2007: Picking up on David's question, is there actually any tasting goes on at these ... er ... installations, or are they just for the eyes?
Elizabeth Lyons: 4:11pm Apr 19, 2007: David and Martin, thanks for those questions. The table has the products in bottles and gift boxes, decorative foliage from the fruit trees themselves, a slate with the pricing, a mini-poster with the fruit grower's biography/profile, pieces of fruit and pictures of the region and a bowls for sampling the products along with a basket of pastries and breads, napkins, spoons, tasting cups, etc. The tables are about a meter in diameter. : )
Martin Cassell: 5:30pm Apr 19, 2007: A veritable cornucopia of verbal invention and periphrastic floridity among the suggestions -- but if I understand correctly, the phrase is a heading in guidelines for the exhibitors, not a slogan to tickle to public's tastebuds. N'est-ce pas le cas?
Elizabeth Lyons: 5:38pm Apr 19, 2007: Martin, thank you again - yes, this is a power-point presentation with slides showing stores how to set up the tables with the product displays - in fact, it is often likely that the local sales representative will be doing these, in tandem with the stores themselves. These are instructions and graphics for the correct setup so it will be uniform, world wide (the stores are all over the world). I also see the value of all answers for future uses of this term - future translations that others are interested in, in differing contexts.

suezen, thank you - I used this translation, "tasting stations". I also liked Martin's as another industry-related answer. Apparently this term can be translated in a variety of creative ways. I appreciate all the suggestions people supplied which ranged far beyond my own thinking on this topic. It was quite helpful.

speciality for the "non-run-of-the-mill" idea of gourmand.
display because that's what it is -- as Conor says, « pôle » is a pretty hand-waving kind of term

to bring it down to the level of primary-school Show-and-Tell, Janet and John's Look and Learn, and babies' 'tapis d'eveil'.

Or maybe just the Triple Tees.

Coming over all poetic and trendy all of a sudden, given the informative content of these stands (recipes, info on growers, etc.), how about "Seeds of Knowledge stands"?

OK - for the more prosaic amongst us, how about "Tasting Corners"... or "Sampling Spots"... or "Discovery Points"?

Just realised from Elizabeth's intro that no actual tasting as such goes on here. I think something like "Fruit Discovery/Info Point/Corner" might do the job though.

-> I think this is humour. But if you are serious, I think "pôle" is often used lazily in the sense of a grouping of things. Maybe it sounds like sexy jargon in French, but it does about as much as Anne Widdicombe for me ;-)
