French term or phrase: avec la mention Tres honorable avec felicitations
VU la decision dudit jury prononcant l'admission de l'interessee avec mention Tres honorable avec felicitations
Anthony Tamburro (X)
PhD (summa cum laude)/ PhD with distinction
Explanation:
Summa cum laude means with the highest honour which is what the student is being conferred with.
I think in English you can leave out "avec felicitations" - with the congratulations of the examining board, however, if you want to keep it in, you can see the following link:
http://www.kuleuven.ac.be/english/teaching/exam_regulations....
Students pass with the following distinctions:
passed summa cum laude with the congratulations of the Board of Examiners
passed summa cum laude
passed magna cum laude
passed cum laude
passed cum fructu
has passed
has not passed
has been suspended

4 mins
  -> thank you

agree  sarahl (X): yes, except for the PhD part, this sounds like thèse de médecine to me.
15 mins
  -> thanks, I assume it's a PhD because of the "jury" added:or master's if studied in France :-)

agree  sktrans: SCL +distinction
18 mins
  -> thank you

20 mins
  -> thank you

agree  Michel A.: oui, but why PhD it could be a Ma, Bsc or whatever
24 mins
  -> Yes, you're quite right; in France, different levels of education needed to be "soutenue" :-)

disagree  Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X): why leave out congratulations? summa cum laude is American this is French and I say the congratulations stays
42 mins
  -> you can say what you like, I have not ruled it out. We don't have "summa cum laude", just "PhDs" in the UK, hence I also added in the possibility of "with distinction", which is unusual in BrEng anyway

agree  translatol: Probably a PhD since there was a jury, and we are not told whether the translation is required for North American or British readers.

with the highest honors and congratulations of the jury

Explanation:
no summa cum laude..that's purely an US animal

it means with high honors, period

the highest honors in France are with the adverb TRES
you can\'t get higher

so with highest honors......summa cum laude is FOR GRADE POINT AVERAGE

THESE HONORS ARE FOR DEFENSE OF THE THESIS, imo AND I don\'t think one needs muck it up with US expressions. Just translate the French

agree  Zareh Darakjian Ph.D.: Of course, as mentioned, "... of the examining panel"

disagree  translatol: No need to disparage Americanisms (a Latin one at that). And this is a formal official expression (a 'mention' on a degree) for which I think it's allowable to substitute a university equivalent in English. In my university it was awarded for PhDs as well
1 hr
  -> oh for heavens sake i am AMERICAN...please

neutral  David Umpleby: The problem is that everyone receives this in France (or at least did when I defended my thesis) for their defence of their Doctoral thesis - unless they fail, and so the phrase is extremely difficult to translate as it has no real sense or value.
4 hrs
  -> are you 100% sure of that? I am not...
