sheepsfoot roller

Explication :
It's a type of tamping roller, but the shapes of the "feet" are different.

sheepsfoot roller. A towed roller for compaction of clay soils, with one or more drums which can be water ballasted. The drums have a number of steel bars about 10cm long, wleded radially to their surfaces ....

tamping roller, steel-wheeled roller. A tractor for compaction of soils, having two or more large steel wheels with TAPERED steel projections. Although resembling the sheepsfoot roller (apart from the shape of the projections) it travels faster and is more suitable for soils without clay.

However, it is not certain that the French make or are even aware of the distinction.
